Weddings you went to where things went wrong?

Please can you share any times you attended a wedding where things went awry. I’m just keen to avoid any possible issue.

The only one I can think of is where the bride was two hours late. Apparently her family were just really exacting with the make up artist and had a lot of the make up redone/touched up.

We were sat in the Church for aaaaages. It meant that the drinks reception/evening meal was really rushed as the bride and groom really prioritised the dancing.

In the late nineties, my friend hired a DJ for her wedding evening do. The fuses went on his sound equipment and he didn't have any spares with him. No music for the reception.

justusandthecat · 09/03/2025 13:07

Grooms brother called the brides dad's best friend the n word. Brides dad knocked him out in the middle of the dance floor. Grooms mum attacked brides dad and it all went downhill from there. Absolute shit show of a day but it is the most memorable wedding I've been to.

Penguinmouse · 09/03/2025 13:07

Not awful in the grand scheme of things as the whole wedding was lovely but my friend’s dad made a really bad speech. It was long and compared her to her siblings a lot in quite a derogatory way. The next morning we were all like… “what was that speech?!”

Rycbar · 09/03/2025 13:07

Nothing compared to the rest of these 😂 but we went to a wedding that did sharing bowls of food on the table - great in theory but they out the bowls down at the same place each time and by the time it got round the whole table we barely had anything to eat. I was so mindful of this when planning my own wedding that we overcatered massively but I couldn’t stand the idea of people going hungry as it’s all I remember at the other wedding (that and being smashed - free bar and no food is not a good mix 😂)

A colleague who's reception was held back at her house was the worst wedding I've been to. The bride and groom and his friend and girlfriend got really drunk and decided to leave the wedding and go off out round town, this was late afternoon and they'd been drinking all day. They sneaked off and left all their guests at the house (just an ordinary semi) to go on a pub crawl. We all decided to leave but the trouble was, the friend and his wife had brought their two little kids to the "reception" and they just abandoned them at the house. One toddler was found eating the contents of an ashtray and none of the guests knew them or their parents (so couldn't take them home with them), so our boss said he couldn't just ignore it (we worked in a profession connected with child protection), and he phoned Social Services and the kids were taken into emergency foster care. In the meantime, we'd managed to get hold of the newlyweds, who returned with their friends to find their kids were being taken away by a social worker and the newlyweds and their friends then went ballistic at the other guests, saying they'd just assumed "someone" would look after them.

I went to a wedding where it was actually a brilliant day and everyone had a fantastic time.

Monday morning the happy couple flew out to Mexico for their honeymoon and on the first night he confessed he’d been having an affair for over a year and shouldn’t have gone through with getting married

DH ridiculous cousin. Had nut allergy. Wanted Waldorf salad. Gave her self an epi pen. Had a reaction, ambulance had to be called. Missed the entire evening reception

I'm guessing there are many more tales about said cousin...

Yikes! The poor bride. How long did the marriage last?

Two years or so? Not before she'd quit her job and he'd moved them both to NY.

SpaghettiHettie · 09/03/2025 13:05

Bride and Grooms child (age 6), fell into a pond. They spent a while upstairs in the hotel trying to dry him out

AnotherDayAnotherIdea · 09/03/2025 13:05

I went to a wedding of one of my dearest friends.
The hotel hosting the reception had promised to entertain the guests with a drink during the time they turned the room around. But you really need to query such claims because in reality we were packed into a tiny ante room with no chairs or windows for 90 minutes whilst we were waiting. They gave us one drink each and everyone was very hungry. Further drinks were £14 each.

The couple were oblivious as this was the time they were having their photos.

Many people just went down the pub in the end.

The groom was gay and very much in the closet, and everyone but the bride knew.

Went to one where just as the bride arrived in the car outside the heavens opened. It was a freak rain storm in the middle of summer so no one had an umbrella or even a coat. The bride and bridesmaids had to walk down the aisle like drowned rats. Only made worse by the fact that everyone else in the church was completely dry...!

DoYouReally · 09/03/2025 13:04

The page boy vomited profusely walking up the aisle before someone took him away.
It was a really hot day and the church stank as a result.

The grooms speech was lengthy and spoke about everyone important in his life, parents, siblings, grandparents, friends, this boss, his dog. Not on mention of the bride. Divorced within 5 years.

The bride went to bed at 11pm. Awkward scene when she asked groom to go with her and was told that he was catching up with friends. He stayed up drinking all night. They are both miserable and still together for reasons unknown. No idea why they got married as they clearly hate each other.

I went to the wedding of a friend whose father had died a couple of years previously, so her BIL gave her away and made the speech. However, his speech spoke of the late father and him missing the day and seeing his daughter wed. This set the bride and her mother off, they couldn't stop crying. It was awful.

Oh dear.
We had similar.
Original wedding postponed because brides dad died.
New wedding 6 months later ..... but bride looked as miserable as sin all day ( and night ) long.
His cousin married few months after that.
They couldn't keep their smiled at each like teenagers ( they weren't ) all the way through.
Both couples went in to have a couple of kids or three.
The smiling couple are still happily together, the other are not ....

DisforDarkChocolate · 09/03/2025 13:01

Nothing too bad, the really tight MOB had provided soo little food there was nothing left for the last few tables at the buffet. We went home early.

jackstini · 09/03/2025 13:01

Pp reminded me of this one

We had chocolate covered strawberries on the side of the dessert

I went to say hello to some friends and one of the 1 year olds wiped chocolatey hands straight down the front of my wedding dress
Her mum was horrified bless her, but my bridesmaids whizzed me back to the room, took off the skirt and washed it in the basin with hand soap then dried it out fast as they could with hairdryers! (Thank goodness it hit the organza skirt and not the satin embellished bodice...)

I was back at the reception 20 mins later and the relief on my friend's face was palpable!

Jellycatspyjamas · 09/03/2025 13:00

My friend had a very small wedding, close family and a couple of friends. It was in a very informal venue where the guests kind of gathered around the couple during the ceremony.

The celebrant did a homily during the ceremony talking about how beautiful the wedding rings were and how life comes along causing scratches and dents. The idea was to remind the bride and groom to nurture their marriage however he continued the ring analogy too far, telling the groom he should “polish her ring” on a regular basis.

Cue very adolescent sniggering from those gathered closely around bride and groom.

ohyesido · 09/03/2025 13:00

I attended one where only half the guests got fed, mix up with the number of people attending the wedding breakfast. Very awkward when they started clearing away the starters not knowing that 30 or so had not yet been served.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 09/03/2025 13:00

The brides dad owned a very expensive car and ferrying around everyone all morning to hair appointments etc. He was also the driver for the couple to the venue. When everyone was ready he took the bridesmaids to the church intending to come back for the bride, only he ran out of petrol and had left his phone behind so poor bride was all alone wondering where he was! Eventually someone, a neighbour or friend, went to pick her up a white work van and collected stressed Dad on the way. They had to hop out of the back of the van at the church and she ripped her dress. After the ceremony for laugh people decorated the work van and the driver drove the bride and groom to the venue in it, so they have lots of photos of them beside a dirty work van, they made the best of the day.

HolidayHappy123 · 09/03/2025 12:53

Why?

He didn't really want to get married, just went along with it because she did. She knew he wouldn't come to the reception, he wanted to go home and game. She told people the reason was that he "didn't like crowds".

NotDarkGothicMama · 09/03/2025 12:58

One where the bride was late because the car had driven her to the wrong church. Us bridesmaids were standing outside the actual church, feeling worried as she'd left before us (our taxi didn't show up!), when the wedding car screeched round the corner at top speed, with bride waving her bouquet at us. So funny in retrospect, but the groom was already nervous!

Keiththecatwithamagichat · 09/03/2025 12:58

I forgot the one where the bride's parents stayed for the wedding, came to the reception for all of five minutes and then left "to get back to the dogs" so there was no father of the bride speech and empty chairs at the top table. Bride cried for a bit but then wiped her eyes and enjoyed her evening.

BanditoShipman · 09/03/2025 12:57

Poor young lady collapsed and died at the reception while dancing. Was so sad for everyone.

Hoppinggreen · 09/03/2025 12:56

My Grandma fell a few hours before my brothers wedding and my dad took her to A&E. It was pre mobile phones days so we couldn't keep in touch to see if they would make it to the wedding or not. They did arrive just in time and she was fine.
A one of DH's family members weddings the MOB had a nasty dog and it was likely to bite someone when Bride etc were getting ready as it tended to kick off if there were lots of people in the house. Unfortunately it got loose just as everyone was leaving and bit the brides Grandad (who was due to give her away) he bravely wrapped a tea towel around his hand and tried to carry on but by the time they arrived at the church it was obvious he couldn't and someone had to take him to hospital. DH was asked to step in and give the bride away, rather misogynistic as The Bride had closer female family members but MOB insited it had to be a man. He did it and Grandad was able to make it to The Reception and do the speeches, which DH was very happy about!
