Weddings you went to where things went wrong?

Please can you share any times you attended a wedding where things went awry. I’m just keen to avoid any possible issue.

The only one I can think of is where the bride was two hours late. Apparently her family were just really exacting with the make up artist and had a lot of the make up redone/touched up.

We were sat in the Church for aaaaages. It meant that the drinks reception/evening meal was really rushed as the bride and groom really prioritised the dancing.

I think the couple had tried to be “hipster” and hired a big tent on a campsite overlooking a small lake, except the weather was awful. The meal was a hog roast and a table at a time were called up to queue and get their food from it. We were one of the last tables and were starving by that point, but the top table had finished their hog roast ages ago so as we finally sat down with ours they started their speeches etc, but we were eating our food. Was just very naff!

DD had a massive nosebleed in the lift - we’d agreed she go via the staircase as she had had one similar the day before but they forgot! Bridesmaid was quick into action and caught the bleed quickly so only a few spots on the dress that we managed to sponge off. Took us well over an hour to stop it but everyone was amazing - hotel delayed the food and the photographer stayed on. Hotel got one of their ladies from the spa to touch up the make up and put towels under the celebrants table in case it started again. Luckily no major repeats and a great day was had by all.

Venue ran out of wine by 5pm mainly because the ceremony was at 1pm and the guests were left with a couple of tiny canapés and no other form of entertainment for nearly 5 hours as the b&g went to town on their photo opps.

B&G who were determined to have a garden party style summer wedding and ignored all advice to have a contingency plan. Cue worst rainstorms for a decade, a wedding of 80+ people, and no shelter apart from a small open sided gazebo serving as a bar.

Also see December wedding in the Lake District where we all had to go on a steamer boat around a lake for 3 hours after the ceremony. Driving sleet, freezing temperatures, the bridesmaids started crying because of the cold, and the only indoor space was, again, a tiny bar downstairs which had understandably been taken over by the older family & guests less able to stand.

There was a wonderful one on here not long ago, from a poster whose wedding reception was the day of Princess Diana’s funeral not far from Althorp, at a hotel that was serving as the local base for the media covering it, and who thought that the carefully laid-out buffet in an adjacent room had been provided for them and ate it!

I had to do all the phoning around to cancel when a friend cancelled her wedding a couple of weeks before I was due to happen — this was before text messages, social media, email etc, so it was literally a matter sitting by a landline with a list of phone numbers. There were 150 guests, some overseas, so it took forever…

Jesus, I think I'd have left 🤣
How selfish do you have to be to leave your guests sitting in a church for hours.

I think as long as you remember that guests are just that - guests, and that you are hosts, you'll be fine. Consider how it will be for guests, so don't leave them for hours between the ceremony and whatever comes next. I think some couples forget they're hosts, and so the guests day isn't viewed as that important.

So would i.

Someone dying at a wedding must be more common than people think- I know someone who ended up doing CPR on the groom’s 99 year old grandad who had peacefully passed away during the dancing. However, he was very very old, and once the ambulance had been I think the reception carried on, albeit in a more muted state.
I used to work with the most lovely, if slightly accident prone, reverend, who accidentally set the marriage certificate alight and had to quietly ask the wedding party to sign a new one during the reception 😬😂. He really was such a sweetheart though, like a character from Thursday Murder Club, you could barely be annoyed at him.

This wasn't as bad as some but I went to a terrible wedding about 17 or 18 years ago that was just very poorly organised.

The bride was an old school friend of mine and was never known for her consideration of other people and this carried through on her wedding day. The reception was miles away from the church they got married in and it was on the hottest day of the year. From the time we got to the reception to when the sit down meal started it was about 3-4 hours. There were a couple of jugs of pimms available but no other drinks or any food in all that time. No one was allowed inside and the bride and groom were faffing around taking photos with not a thought for the guests which included several elderly relatives. People were passing out from the heat left right and centre.

The food when it was finally served was not good and the seating plan was hideously mismanaged and no thought was given to the guests that were being put together, resulting in some interesting scenes. The bride also invited a relative who she knew to be a sex offender.

The couple were divorced within a few years (she shagged a colleague and buggered off). The bride is now married to the OM and the groom has also remarried.

Crikey- all these elderly rellies karking it at the reception- bit of a dampener on the day!

And as for people neglecting the wedding breakfast to watch football- disgraceful behaviour. I would have been absolutely fuming.

The groom went home after the registry office, so the bride hosted the reception herself.

OMG are they still married??

Plantatreetoday · 09/03/2025 13:19

Not really something went wrong more a personal issue

At a wedding on a friend in France there was a 5 course meal
I am vegetarian
Of the five courses
Entre….which was pate
Fish course
Sorbet
main course
Dessert

The caterers gave me fish for the entre, fish course, and main course and the dessert was gelatine based
They told me, a vegetarian at the time for over 20 years, that vegetarians eat fish and gelatine!
I ate a lot of bread to soak up all the wine instead 🤣

Not went wrong exactly but I went to a wedding that took place at the same time as England were playing at Euros match and pretty much every man stayed in the pub watching the match rather than coming to the church.

So rude! My wedding was on the day of an England - Germany match but nobody missed the wedding or reception because of it. My sport mad friend did have a radio and earphones with him (pre-mobile phone days) surreptitiously listening in every now and then during the reception and when one of the speeches said thanks for coming despite the match, he called out England are winning 1-0 and everyone cheered! Didn't spoil the day at all.

CurlewKate · 09/03/2025 12:52

I had to go and tell everyone-including the bride-that my brother had (rightly-but oh shit) changed his mind.

Good grief. He didn't have the decency to tell her himself??

Iamthemoom · 09/03/2025 13:14

We remembered everything except the printed out copies of our vows! This is pre digital era so we couldn't access them in a phone like you would now. They were on my PC at home and unreachable. The fact I wrote PC says how long ago this was right?!

Bride late to the church as in all the excitement of leaving home with the bridesmaids/family, the dog escaped and spent half an hour galloping up and down the street outside while loads of well dressed people tried to catch him!

Ha ha
A friend of DH's had a large dog, which , completely out of character, decided on the morning of the wedding to run away.
It took 2 hours before Doggo was found ...... groom made it in time and they have several grandchildren now Grin

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 09/03/2025 13:14

Bride chose a posh wedding venue and stuffed everyone right into it. Chose cheap "get served at a van" catering. Lost her mind when people couldn't squeeze their way out from the tables to get their food easily. Massive food queues and tetchy guests.

(This was karma imo because she brushed off our concerns that she chose the same wedding venue as our friend who was going through an acrimonious divorce from said wedding and had to show up to grin and bear it.)

YoungSoak · 09/03/2025 13:14

A friend’s wedding was cancelled due to Covid. They got married with six people in attendance a few months later and held a big wedding party with a couple of hundred guests once things opened back up. The groom is from overseas so his family all flew in for the party. The groom got Covid and couldn’t attend in the end. The bride had to host the reception on her own

Christwosheds · 09/03/2025 13:12

My friend was at a wedding where the groom shagged one of the bridesmaids…

DJ and disco didn’t turn up. Bride’s response set the tone - she said it didn’t matter, she’d just married the love of her life and was heading on a fabulous honeymoon the next day, so there was no point getting upset. Someone went home and got a speaker, plugged in an iPod, everyone cracked on with dancing. Was a great example of it is how you respond to things that matters.

Oh I love this - that is the perfect attitude

Ihateboris · 09/03/2025 13:12

The groom didn't turn up to my sister's wedding! Personally I think she had a lucky escape

There was a fight at the evening do, and the groom's brother (irc) locked himself in his car and sat there sulking.

UpTheLaganInABubble1 · 09/03/2025 13:10

Some of these sound awful. Haven't had anything that bad thankfully

The worst wedding I went to was in Italy, during a heatwave. It was outdoors with hardly any shade. The bride and groom spent so long having their photos taken and we were all so hot. I was really concerned about some of the elderly (irish) guests. We and a few others ended up leaving before the meal. The people who stayed on for the whole thing said they had to jump into cold baths when they got back to their hotels.

Two years or so? Not before she'd quit her job and he'd moved them both to NY.

Twat. Having been very hurt by an experience with a man who would not admit he was gay, I have no sympathy for this sort of behaviour.

I have a family member whose marriage was never consummated. There was some amount of hubris on his part as I think he believed he could "cure" her from the effects of sexual abuse as a child.

ImWearingPantaloons · 09/03/2025 13:07

I went to one that under catered. We were starving.
