Weddings you went to where things went wrong?

Please can you share any times you attended a wedding where things went awry. I’m just keen to avoid any possible issue.

The only one I can think of is where the bride was two hours late. Apparently her family were just really exacting with the make up artist and had a lot of the make up redone/touched up.

We were sat in the Church for aaaaages. It meant that the drinks reception/evening meal was really rushed as the bride and groom really prioritised the dancing.

Mine. Mix up over the Banns meant they hadn't been read: XDH had to get a special licence on the morning of the wedding. I think God was trying to tell me something.

BeyondMyWits · 09/03/2025 13:46

Last 3 weddings we've been to were country barn type venues. The photography teams ran everything.
Constantly in your face - things like going on a balcony above the ceremony, "can everybody wave and cheer..."... why... it wasn't spontaneous, it wasnt natural, then having camera drones outside. No one EVER felt like letting their hair down, pretty dull wedding. Was expecting an absolutely stunning online album after all the faffing about, putting us old and uglies at the back etc...
Really was so-so , spoiled the day in more ways than one.

Don't keep people waiting while you're having hundreds of photos taken. It's rude. We were standing around for 1.5 hours at the last one.

KindnessIsKey123 · 09/03/2025 13:44

We’ve been to two weddings with a mandatory (!) ceilidh after the dinner. At both of them we made our excuses & ducked out.

Owmyelbow · 09/03/2025 13:44

Best man and groom got wasted. Speeches were so offensive people removed kids from the room. Marriage lasted about a week

Owlteapot · 09/03/2025 13:42

Only food served all day was a pulled pork burger and a cupcake each. No sides and no evening food. Lots of drunk people with nothing to soak up the alcohol was not a good combination

I was at a wedding where I witnessed the "lightning strike" moment at the reception, when the groom fell in love with one of his colleagues. They literally were talking and then looked at one another and BOOM.
Dreadful shock for the poor bride, who was lovely The couple had been together for ages (about 8 years) as well and were a charming couple.
This was in the August, by November he had moved permanently to live with the colleague and I believe the eventually married and had children.

Another horrible man. Why on earth was he looking at other women on his wedding day? I suspect they were already having an affair.

Hired a local mini bus to take the bridegroom and his family and friends from their hotel to the registry office (getting married in bride's hometown, the bridegroom was from the other end of the country). Registrar had really impressed on us that it was really important not to be late as time slots are very tight. Bus driver thought the registry office was somewhere else, and didn't believe bridegroom when he said they were going the wrong way because he wasn't from there. Very tense moments apparently, but they did get there just a couple of minutes late. Bridegroom had blood pressure through the roof, and it does show in some of the photos!

I had to go and tell everyone-including the bride-that my brother had (rightly-but oh shit) changed his mind.

What a horrible man. Why on earth did you do his dirty work for him?

I'm going to share the opposite - a Jewish wedding where they handed you a snack the instant you walked in to the reception, then did dancing, then regular feeding throughout the evening in between the speech-y and sing-y bits.

I loved it! At most weddings, you are hungry, bored and sometimes cold (barns, however picturesque, can get in the bin...)(don't get me started on marquees).

I went to a wedding in Italy recently and I almost needed to be rolled out. The bride’s dad led every guest around in a giant conga. Normally I would not be a fan of the conga but it was so much fun.

pepperaunt · 09/03/2025 13:36

Here’s a lighthearted minor one: when the bride tossed her bouquet over her shoulder it hit the ceiling fan, was sliced into a million pieces, and was strewn all over the dance floor

aintnospringchicken · 09/03/2025 13:35

Was invited to the evening reception and duly showed up at the specified time to discover everything was running very late. Everyone invited to the day celebrations were just finishing off their main course.
We had to leave early because we had to be up early the next day with a long drive ahead . By 10.30pm the evening buffet still hadn't been put out so we had to leave unfed and really hungry. We were passing through a village on the way home and saw that the chip shop was still open.Sitting eating chips in the car with the windows steaming up never tasted so good.

Not me but my brother and his wife went to a wedding where the bride fancied herself as a singer and provided an entertainment slot in the evening of her singing accompanied by an elderly man on a piano who looked like his dentures didn't fit his mouth properly and he kept chomping with his mouth open. Couldn't fault his piano playing though.

The bride may have sounded ok in a studio with auto tune but singing live in a venue was not a good idea. The video showed many of the guests looking pained and wishing imminent death whilst the bride screeched in an out of tune reedy voice.

sadly at my daughters wedding I had my hair done at a local salon and they said they had a new beauty salon open so I decided to have a professional make up done.
By time we got to the Registry Office my eyes were burning really sore. I struggled on with photos but in the end my sister took me to local a and e just a small hospital. they tried to wash my eyes out as I had in the loos at the venue but it was still beyond painful.
In the end I was taken to the larger hospital as they were worried about my eye sight which is not brilliant anyway. I had lots of washing out and various drops my ex refused to come and get me I had no money but thankfully someone at the hospital gave me a lift. Next day I had to go back I booked a taxi and my ex who was not my ex then had to pay! no buses where I lived then.
sadly I missed my daughters first dance and cake cutting. Things are a bit delicate between us and she was not happy thought I was making a fuss over nothing but believe me it was 10 x worse then any eye infection. I had to go to the hospital for a fortnight and they told me it was actually chemical burns.
I know now she should have done a patch test but thought she would just do it I suppose. Went back to complain a few weeks later but she had gone

Elderflower14 · 09/03/2025 13:32

At my wedding, my sister forgot the tape recorder to record the service for two elderly aunts who couldn't attend . My Dad and i were in the carriage heading to the church when sister went thundering back the other way to get the recorder. Also the burglar alarm for my grandma's house (next door to the church) went off all through the service. Thankfully we couldn't hear it but my friend who was was the girl groom had a terrible time calming the horses down.

Mother of the bride was a Hyacinth Bucket character with less salubrious relatives on her OH side (very Keeping Up Appearances) anyway that side of the family got very drunk and beat up the videographer! Police were called.

At a wedding reception ( different to the one above) bride’s father in law got really drunk and mooned everyone in the dance floor 😂😂😂

Another wedding reception- the best man described the bride as having a huge arse in his speech - bride was well pissed off.

how do I end up at these things?!

ETA another wedding started and ran very late and the food was so awful we had to get a McDonald’s on our way home!

Edited

The bride’s father in law? Do you mean the groom’s dad? Or was the bride a polygamist who invited her current in-laws to her new wedding?

Went to a wedding where guests had only been allocated one glass of wine with their meal. When waiters were asked to top up glasses they kept on disappearing but not saying there were no top ups. Eventually someone went up and asked the groom, then proceeded to the bar to order a bottle for their table. No money put behind the bar either.

Another wedding, we were evening guests. We arrived but the meal and speeches had over run. We waited and waited, couldn’t get any drinks as the bar was inside the reception room. after 90 minutes we could go into the room. Found a table, sat down and realised that people were coming in with plates of food. Went to the buffet table and there was virtually no food left. Most of it had been taken by the day guests who were still hungry!

Son used to be a manager at a local wedding venue. Wedding cake was delivered the day before the wedding. It had been made by groom’s Nanna. It arrived already assembled in its 3 tiers and put into a walk in refrigerator. A few hours later a member of staff told DS that the cake looked wonky. By the time my son got there the cake had collapsed. Turned out that Nanna hadn’t used supporting rods and made the bottom tier out of sponge with the other two tiers made of fruit and marzipan.

I know someone who’s exH left his own wedding reception and went clubbing in town with his mates! She was at her own reception alone.

Went to a wedding where the bride was 1hr 45 minutes late the groom was 2hrs 10 late. The bride thought she had been tilted Guests for the next wedding were turning up.

The sermon was about how patience and being prompt is important in relationships

Got to the reception in a community centre and the booze had been stolen. So mad dash to the local off license to restock.

Could go on tbh. Very memorable wedding

Takersgonnatake · 09/03/2025 13:27

This isn’t about the wedding per se. But on the honeymoon the bride (early twenties) choked to death on a chip in a horrible freak accident. I know this because many years ago I was chatted up in a club by a man wearing a wedding ring. I asked him what a married man was doing in a club chatting up girls and he told me he was a widower and his wife had died on honeymoon. And how. I was young and drunk and ripped him to shreds for what I thought was the worst line ever. The next day dissecting the evening with friends one asked me how I’d got on with “John” and wasn’t it awful about his wife. It was all true and I was apparently the only person who didn’t already know about it. I was utterly mortified and still sometimes wonder what I’d say to this poor man to apologise for my callow drunken scorn of him should I ever meet him again. I’d probably hide behind a pot plant really though.

I don’t think I’ve been any where something (noticeable) went wrong. But a few marriages afterwards have, possibly due to the focus on the wedding (or the need to have one).

Tbf if you want to be married you do need to have a wedding🙈

Brides dad passed away just after the meal. He looked obviously very ill, but such a terrible shock.

Oh my, how horrific for all involved 😢
