Weddings you went to where things went wrong?

Please can you share any times you attended a wedding where things went awry. I’m just keen to avoid any possible issue.

The only one I can think of is where the bride was two hours late. Apparently her family were just really exacting with the make up artist and had a lot of the make up redone/touched up.

We were sat in the Church for aaaaages. It meant that the drinks reception/evening meal was really rushed as the bride and groom really prioritised the dancing.

I have been to a few weddings where the father of the bride speeches were so awful. One where he droned on boringly for so long the bride had to tell him to stop! Why don’t some men realise how dull they are!!!!!???

My sister in law got married a couple of weeks ago, so the best man's speech is (unfortunately) still fresh in my mind.

The bride and groom didn't have a hen/stag do, so it felt like the BM shoe horned in things that are best suited to the stag do.
He even ended the speech by saying that he thought the newlyweds were going to Wales for their honeymoon...cos the groom said he was 'going to bang her for a fortnight'.

Off the chart inappropriate.

I went to a wedding where the Bride got so drunk she had to leave an hour into the Reception. Her Mum put her to bed and looked after her while everyone (including the Groom) else carried on partying.

I also went to one where everything ran so late the evening guests sat around in the hotel lobby waiting for the day guests to finish the meal, speeches etc. Took so long some of them actually left. Same wedding, they started the music way too soon for the Bride walking down the aisle. It was a looooong aisle (big venue) so the song finished when she was half way and she just walked the rest in silence. Bit awkward.

I've been to a couple of weddings where there wasn't enough food, people were complaining of being hungry (to each other, not the B&G), at one of them a few people went off to find food nearby then came back. The other one was very remote so not an option.

Not sure if this counts as something going wrong, but I've been to mid-week weddings where lots of people left early because they had work the next day, and no one was drinking for the same reason, so things fizzled out very early and there wasn't much of a party atmosphere.

I have attended multiple outdoor weddings in the blazing summer heat, not in the uk. Guests have ended up sunburned and at one someone fainted. If you want to have a wedding in a hot climate, provide shade and much more water than you possibly think your guests could ever drink.

I was actually at a wedding just before Christmas where there was a fire alarm at the venue.

It was all dealt with very well and it was a dry day so it was all fine. All over within about 30 minutes or so and back inside.

A fire alarm is completely different to an explosion in a nearby building. The reception in the venue wouldn't be able to go ahead. I'm sure that bride though would have been greatful they weren't there at the time of the explosion.

WestCorkGal · 09/03/2025 14:23

During my catholic ceremony in a beautiful old church a massive candle on a stone windowsill exploded onto flames. My friends all highly trained ICU nurses well used to reacting quickly in emergencies were so dumbstruck they just sat watching. Luckily my husbands friend had his usual emergency can of craft ale in his coat pocket doused the holy flame with his precious beer lol
I'm still reminded of this sign of eternal damnation 30 years later but hey! We are still together ❤️

BarryAsthma · 09/03/2025 14:22

My friend’s husband had a bad asthma attack at my wedding doing Cossack dancing to Ra Ra Rasputin and had to be taken to hospital!

I didn’t even know about it until after my honeymoon.

Nonrienderien · 09/03/2025 14:22

I attended a big wedding where during the brides father's speech he produced a little box from his pocket. The box contained the brides baby teeth. He turned to the groom & said they are yours now 😳😂

The one where the maid of honour and two bridesmaids made a speech on how many men the bride had previously slept with - including her parents bed and their shed! It went on and on....

No-one laughed. Bride looked like she was about to cry.

Oh no I'm dying for her! THIS is why i want speeches banned a mandatory toast and a thank you for coming should be sufficient 😀

EmeraldShamrock000 · 09/03/2025 14:18

Staff dropping the cake, family disagreement, neither incident really took from the day, IMO, I'm sure the bride felt different.

Cheaply undercatered and ran out of food.

Exactly this, we were the last table up to the buffet & there was nothing left. Turns out parents of bride thought there was too much waste at weddings to paid caterers for 40 with 70 guests. 🙄 I had 3 young children & had to head to the supermarket to get something to eat.
Not only was it bad that they ran out but sending the only table with children up last was also thoughtless

I haven't been to any dramatic ones but I have been to one where I was hungry and photos took ages and it was so incredibly dull. Please don't do that to your guests

Indeed. Ceremony at 12. Endless photos. Food at 5.
It was at a Hello wedding, hence the photos. Didn't last. She married a much more famous person very quietly a couple of years later.

We’ve been to two weddings with a mandatory (!) ceilidh after the dinner. At both of them we made our excuses & ducked out.

Obviously it shouldn’t be mandatory (I’m thinking of people with disabilities/injuries etc) but the two weddings I’ve been to with ceilidhs have been incredibly fun because almost everyone gets up and dances, and it’s all the more fun because the majority don’t really know what they’re doing.

  1. Church burned down week before wedding but replacement church was found and was so idyllic the B and G were suspected of burning the first one down.
  2. Wedding venue went into receivership and the couple only found out the night before and managed to persuade everyone to get it opened for them. The meal was fine but not the feast that had been planned (tinned carrots etc)
  3. The Band G spent a fortune, 3 photographers, harpist, band and everything had to be done to an exacting standard......I was bored shitless and one of the photographers kept making us repeat things so that they could get the perfect picture, no spontaneous pictures for them!

I was at one where the bride and groom had a massive row, didn't speak at the reception, spent the night in different hotels and divorced less than a year later.

One where the groom's car broke down about 20 miles from the venue.

My uncle told me about one in a coastal town where several of the guests, the best man and the groom were lifeboat crew. The rocket went up to call them (before the days of pagers) and they all rushed out. Launched the boat, did the rescue and the vicar was happy to start again where they'd left off a few hours earlier.

Stinksmum · 09/03/2025 14:16

Wedding in a marquee in a field outside a tiny village. We were the last table up for the buffet and, despite the food being served to guests by the caterers, there was virtually nothing left. I had a portion of savoury rice. My brother in law took pity on me and gave me his bread roll.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 09/03/2025 14:16

it was funny watching the bride groom running away from his wife so early on.

I had a rather bossy friend who was strenuously 'trad wife' & anti-feminist, & when she got married she included the word 'obey' in her vows & said it loudly & clearly, just to make sure we all knew where she stood on the matter.

So after the ceremony I took a secret delight in watching her ordering her new husband about & telling him what to do & where to stand for the photos, with him meekly obeying.😂

I was MOH, bride decided partway through getting ready that she’d like to have photos with my classic car in the background. I made a mad dash the 20 mins home to pick up the car. Car promptly broke down on the M1 - August Bank Holiday saturday. I was standing on the hard shoulder in my posh frock as other guests drove past.
When the RAC finally turned up, the lovely recovery guy drove me directly to the reception. It transpired after about 4 glasses of prosecco, awaiting the bridal party, that I was in the wrong side of the hotel……
The ‘other’ bride and groom were lovely about it. My bestie still laughs about having to find a stand in for the reading I was meant to do…. She sent her mum in stealth mission to ask as soon as they arrived at the church. All was well! They had a fab day and aside from smelling of traffic fumes all day, so did I.

Bridegroom was a part-time fireman and bleeper went off during the reception, hin and around 5 other guest bolted but managed to hit another car in the car-park while leaving.

They were stood down and back around 40 mins later but it was funny watching the bride groom running away from his wife so early on.

Was this something you saw on the telly?

Also from personal experience- don’t encourage your bridesmaids to drinks a lot of champagne while getting ready together. Save it till the evening

Agreed. I watched the chief bridesmaid tumble down a flight of stairs because she was pissed
Caught on video too.

TunnocksOrDeath · 09/03/2025 14:13

The bride was from overseas with a religious family and married into a secular British family. The wedding was held in her home city. The groom's brother was given a list of topics not to mention due to cultural sensitivities and deliberately mentioned every single one of them during his best man's speech. This was after the groom's uncle had refused to eat anything that the bride's family had prepared during their stay, because he doesn't eat "foreign food". It was so offensive. The couple are settled in the uk, a long drive from the groom's awful family, and very happy.

Don't keep people waiting while you're having hundreds of photos taken. It's rude. We were standing around for 1.5 hours at the last one.

I got bored during the very brief amount of time we spent doing formal photos and called it off to go drink :D

The bride punched the groom so hard, she knocked him out

She was tiny-she struggled to fill a size zero dress, was about 5'2 and had a trail of 'crazy exs' behind her

He was 6',built like a brick outhouse (but a huge softy) and was madly in love with her (god knows why-shes a very nasty woman)

I was standing on the balcony, looking down and I saw him say something to her,she picked up the hem of her dress ran up the garden and punched him

He went down like a sack of potatoes and I ran to get help as she walked away

Her family didn't even glance up,we where all trying to make sure he was OK (he was) and as he managed to get up,she dragged him off for their first dance

She was watching over his shoulder the whole time,to make sure we where all admiring her and threw a tantrum because I'd nipped off to the loo

I'm sure she would have punched me too but I just gave her the same look I gave my children if they played up when they where young and she backed off

We went to leave as it was turning into a shitty evening and she chased us to give us cupcakes (that where as grotty as the rest of the food) and we left

Loads of people went to message the groom to see if he was OK (and offers of help to get away from her) only to be found they'd all been blocked

Never saw either of them again-shes cut his world to her family, forced him to give up his hobbies/friends and claiming benefits (she forced him to give up work and become her carer)

This was just shy of 10 years ago

I hope he's got out but doubt it

How sad !!

Topsyturvy78 · 09/03/2025 14:10

Not me personally but I've never forget this story. Who wipes shit off a flower girl with wipes then carries on with the wedding as normal?

Haha mine. It was cancelled twice thanks to Covid to start, but thankfully you won’t have to worry about that!

Then my hair and makeup artist cancelled on the morning of, had to get a taxi to my DHs cousins who gave up hers! So missed getting ready in the hotel etc, the registrar called my husband the wrong name (the name of his best man, lol), oh and the fire alarm went off during the meal…and our cake knife snapped when cutting the cake 😂

Still the best day ever ❤️

This sounds like perfect chaos! I bet you laugh about it loads now. I’m glad it was still a great day x
