Weddings you went to where things went wrong?

Please can you share any times you attended a wedding where things went awry. I’m just keen to avoid any possible issue.

The only one I can think of is where the bride was two hours late. Apparently her family were just really exacting with the make up artist and had a lot of the make up redone/touched up.

We were sat in the Church for aaaaages. It meant that the drinks reception/evening meal was really rushed as the bride and groom really prioritised the dancing.

No non-alcoholic drink options all day other than tap water , not even sparkling water. Felt like such weird place to cut cost when there’s loads of alcoholic options. Just quite rubbish if you’re driving / pregnant / don’t drink to not have something fun to drink - even just some jugs of fizzy elderflower would have been so nice

CarrotParrot · 09/03/2025 15:16

A colleague's wedding where the double decker bus taking the guests from church to reception overturned. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt but a lot of their guests had to be checked over and some were admitted to hospital!

BigDahliaFan · 09/03/2025 15:15

one where everyone including the bride knew the groom was gay.but she was sure it would be OK. Think that lasted 3 years,he's now married to a bloke.

Fgfgfg · 09/03/2025 15:15

A week before her wedding a colleague told me she was a lesbian but wanted to give her future children the childhood she'd had so was willing to marry a man she liked but couldn't love.
At the wedding the colleague introduced us to a couple who'd moved out of our city to live very rurally (wedding was on her parents estate in the middle of nowhere). She thought we'd have something in common but he was a proud 'white flighter' who'd left our city because there were too many 'ethnics'. DP is a much more tactful person than me so he dragged me away before things turned nasty.
DP was then pursued relentlessly by colleagues strange Austrian aunt. She'd decided he was one of the more cultured and cool people there because he was wearing DM's and a leather jacket. Everywhere he went there she was!
Then when we went to eat we'd been put on the same table as the racists. Which was a bit awkward.
The food though was lovely.

I was a plus one at a wedding in Italy. The bride's mother was only just out of rehab, very posh and wasted by about 11.30. Everyone seemed to know the groom had slept with and was probably still sleeping with one of the bridesmaids. The marriage lasted 6 months. God knows why they went through with it.

@PyongyangKipperbang I did wonder why she was invited. The bride though is a very generous hearted, open minded person. That's all I can think.

Or perhaps she was the type t0 turn up anyway and make a fuss and at least that way they knew where she was and what she was up to?

MaidOfSteel · 09/03/2025 15:13

We got married abroad. I bought the wrong kind of licence. Suffice to say, I was very glad I read the very small print and that we had time to rush out and get the right type of licence. I’d have been very embarrassed in front of our officiant, husband to be and guests otherwise!

WaterMonkey · 09/03/2025 15:12

I was at one wedding where a female friend of the groom got howling drunk and managed to break her leg dancing, which obviously necessitated an ambulance and all sorts. She’d been determined to make it all about her all day, though. Chronic main character syndrome. I don’t think the couple were arsed and I think they’ve distanced themselves from her a bit now.

Lollzi86 · 09/03/2025 15:11

Big fight between a few of the wedding party. Probably because the wedding was 11.30am and dinner wasn’t until 5…..no food in between but an open bar! Recipe for disaster. Another where wedding was 3pm but no food (other than crisps from behind bar) came out till 9pm (caterers were 2 hours late prepping food), bride was fuming and everyone was famished! So advice is make sure there is plenty of food 😂

CleverMintHedgehog · 09/03/2025 15:10

My own 🙈

Owner of the venue for wedding and reception disappeared two weeks before and had double-booked. Managed to sort with the other couple, organise food etc.

Car broke down a day before we had to leave (had two weddings, one in my home country).

On wedding day, 50km drive and big crash on motorway and my mother and myself got stuck. I was three hours late and as DH doesn’t speak the language was busy re-arranging everything from the car (and was lucky nobody had another wedding booked and could wait for me!)

In all that we then forgot to take off our wedding bands (which we were wearing since the civil ceremony) and realised half-way through the ceremony. Oh, and my veil fell out half-way through, too.

Civil ceremony in the UK. I left the house and my skirt (tiny train) got stuck in the door. Nobody has keys and DH climbed over the fence and managed to get in from the back to free me 😂
Oh and then the receptionist at the registry office welcomed me with “oh, here’s the bride with her father”. Only that it was the groom and not my father!

No one wants an x rated wedding for heavens sake!

Making a pun about Bangor is hardly x-rated.

I was at a wedding where the insane ex-gf of the groom had been invited and after she'd tanked a load of champagne over dinner, she was seen approaching the bride on the other side of the dance floor.

But about 6 of the bride and groom's friends also noticed this and joined them both so the conversation whatever it might have been, was cut short and then everyone started dancing.

Given how insane and drunk the ex-gf was, everyone knew it was going to go major tits-up. Everyone pretty much sprung into action.

At a separate wedding, the food was buffet style, the parents of small children were encouraged to get the first round and by the time they were done, ALL the food was gone. I was heavily pregnant and starving and the only thing left to eat were wedding cupcakes.

Edited

Why on earth was the ex invited ?!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 09/03/2025 15:09

My pal was the most relaxed bride ever, everyone was saying how easy going she was. She got married abroad. On the wedding day a bus took us from the hotel to the church but she never thought to inform us that it was a gated city so we had to walk 20 mins to so on cobblestone. Everyone had high heels and shawls or cardigans and it was particularly cold that day despite being in a hot country. It was freezing and my feet were in agony as I thought we were stepping out into a church, as did everyone else. The bridal party and grooms family arrived in winter coats, runners and bags and changed on arrival, so it wasn't unexpected. The music at the reception was just whatever the hotel normally had for dinner so a guy with a guitar singing local music, so no one danced. They hadn't bothered with a seat plan and it was chaotic with everyone tried to organise themselves. My friend got stuck with the crazy Great aunt whose own family tried to avoid her. A colleague of the bride ended up with the grooms nieces and nephews and spent the time cutting up meat and pouring drinks.

Brides can so easily be labelled bridezillas for fussing but honestly being laid back is worse. We spent a fortune to be there and she didn't seem to give a shit.

Good going of the friends but why on earth was she invited if everyone knew what she would do?!

Sounds like they didn't have much money.

I dont understand this excuse.

If they didnt have much money then they shouldnt try and have a big wedding. I have seen weddings like this and it is never fun for anyone, least of all the couple.

I haven't witnessed anything really bad - the worst I remember was an uncle passing out and paramedics being called (he was fine, it was a hot day) and being served the driest apple crumble ever with absolutely nothing to go with it - we all sat waiting for cream/custard and there was nothing! Cue everyone trying to choke down dry apple crumble on a very hot day.

Evasmissingletter · 09/03/2025 15:04

I was at a wedding where one of the bridesmaids sneaked off and had sex with the other bridesmaids fiancé in a car in the venue’s car park. Unfortunately they were seen getting out and strategically rearranging their clothes by someone who told his mates and subsequently the gossip went round all the other guests. It was late in the evening everyone was a bit drunk and some lads were squaring up to the fiancé and calling him out. It ended up with his fiancé dragging him home and calling the other bridesmaid a fucking slag. B and G oblivious to it as they left about 30 mins before it all kicked off!

828Pax · 09/03/2025 15:02

We attended one where the grandmother had a seizure.

I was a guest at a wedding where the dog was meant to be ring bearer. I think the idea was that the groom was meant to call the dog, who was at the end of the aisle being held by another guest, and then the dog was meant to trot down the aisle with the ring in a pouch on his collar.
However, the ceremony was being held by the side of a lake, and that was too much of a temptation for a Golden Retriever in the middle of summer. So doggo decided to go for a dip instead. The groom managed to call the dog back, but by now the dog was covered in mud. The only silver lining was that doggo was nowhere near the bridal party when the inevitable big shake happened.

'D'B asked our DS to be a page boy. Lovely. Got him trussed up like a miniature silver Liberace, as per the request. Kept waiting for him to be called in to be part of the procession.
Turns out, he hadn't asked his bride and as she started to walk down the aisle, she hissed at DS (4 at the time) 'go back to your mum'!😱
We were confused, then reaaally pissed off at 'D'B (and his mean wife!)
DS was unbothered and cheerfully de-Liberace'd out of his little shiny waistcoat 🤷
Another wedding, felt so, so sorry for the bride. Her 'D'F had too much to drink and during his speech, recalled 'what a goer' she'd been in her younger years. Absolutely shocking. The poor bride ran out in tears and the groom stood up and apologised on behalf of the 'D'F. In front of him. We all clapped hard. Just awful.

Jesus what is it with these blokes and these rubbish jokes about sex? Dullards. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a wedding where that sort of thing would even get a titter, and I’m hardly a bloody duchess.

TortoiseWhoLovesStrawberries · 09/03/2025 15:00

My mother went to a wedding where the groom turned out to be a different person to the one everyone thought she was marrying. Most people didnt know until they turned up at the church.

I have no idea what happened to the original groom, nor how she came to find someone else to marry at such short notice.

JustMeHello · 09/03/2025 14:59

At my cousin's wedding (my cousin was the bride), the groom got hideously drunk at the reception and tried it on with at least 3 guests, told the bride's uncles he'd made a huge mistake, and snogged the bridesmaid on the dancefloor. The marriage was over before the photos came back.

A friend of DHs got married mid week- the venue was lovely but I was driving as had work the next day and the food was awful. You queued to get it (no problem) but were given the tiniest school size portion of horrible lasagna, one triangle of rock hard garlic bread and a ramekin of cut up ‘salad’- lettuce cucumber and tomatoe. That was it, no more left of you were hungry, no pudding- the evening food was tiny brownies and cut up wedding cake hours later. It was a venue so not even a pub with crisps behind the bar. Everyone was embarrassingly starving hungry all evening and the guests got bladdered as we’re drinking on a empty stomach. I hated it.

Sounds like they didn't have much money.
