Weddings you went to where things went wrong?

Please can you share any times you attended a wedding where things went awry. I’m just keen to avoid any possible issue.

The only one I can think of is where the bride was two hours late. Apparently her family were just really exacting with the make up artist and had a lot of the make up redone/touched up.

We were sat in the Church for aaaaages. It meant that the drinks reception/evening meal was really rushed as the bride and groom really prioritised the dancing.

Our wedding venue had a premier league football team staying. Loads of them invaded / graced us with their presence at our evening reception. The men loved it. I hate football but I remember having a boogie with David Seaman who was the England Goalie at the time.
I was a bit put out that they kind of took the glory.....it was like "bride and groom who?" 😳

Went to one in a very posh hotel. Wedding was on a Friday.
During the service a lorry arrived (delivery or bin lorry not sure). The lorry parked right outside the room the ceremony was being held and left engine running for ages. You could not hear the registrar nor hear the bride and groom it was awkward AF.

Eventuality hotel staff sorted it and we all cheered when engine was turned off and ceremony resumed.

I almost inadvertently sexually assaulted the bride at one a few years ago.

I'm no fan of weddings anyway, I had to drive so couldn't drink much and other than my DP I'd only ever met one person attending, so I didn't have high hopes of the day but in all fairness the people were all nice, the venue was stunning and the weather was beautiful... but I digress.

Early on at the reception we were all sat around outside on the rattan furniture drinking prosecco when the bride did her rounds of the tables to thank everyone for coming, or whatever. I had my arm on the arm of my chair, fingers over the side. For some reason she stood so close to my chair that she actually pinned my fingers against it with the tops of her thighs. There was nothing I could do. I had to sit there, my hand trapped in such a position that I was unable to move it without almost certainly touching something I really really shouldn't, and make small talk for what seemed like a week😳

TBF @AllProperTeaIsTheft There was a bit of a drip feed by the poster who originally posted this anecdote. When it was originally posted there was no mention of the fact that B&G were in their 50s with teenage children. It could have been a good gag under different circumstances.

Bride's car broke down on the way to the church, on the motorway. She and her father (in December) had to get out of the car and climb the embankment to wait for repair service. Guests thought she was just a bit late, until we came out of the church after the ceremony to see an AA van and a police car! AA had fixed the car, then followed to church and onto reception, to make sure no more problems. Police had turned up because they were causing a distraction on the motorway and then escorted them the rest of the way. (I think both AA mechanic and police were ending a shift and stayed on in their own time.) Great wedding.

Our neighbour's daughter had a similar story 30 years ago. Was leaving for her wedding from her parents farm, from which the only road out was onto a Scottish dual carriageway notorious for traffic jams. It was at a total standstill in the direction she needed to go. A police car going in the opposite direction saw the wedding cars stuck in the jam and turned round to force a path for them through the jam and escort them to the church! A layer of wedding cake and bottles of whisky were dropped into the police station the next day by her parents.

I find that a strangely puritan attitude; it's a lighthearted quip, not a reading from 'The Joy of Sex'. As for children, either they'll understand it or they won't, as with anything else they'll encounter in life.

Obviously teenagers will understand it and will be aware that married couples have sex. They just won't want to hear about their mum being 'banged' by their dad, especially in front of a whole load of relatives and friends. It's very weird that you don't understand that.

My friend went to one where it was outside, in the UK, in April. It was about 6C! No inside accommodation. Only a a marquee (unheated) for the reception. She told me that people kept going out to their cars to run the heater for a bit to try to warm up.

I went to one last June in a marquee. It was absolutely bloody freezing. Every female was wearing their partner’s suit blazer over summer dresses with their teeth chattering. It was a nice day weather wise but Christ in the evening it was freezing. There were candles on the table and people were taking it in turns to warm their hands.

Lightningrain · 09/03/2025 21:14

I went to a wedding where the bride was sick all down her dress. Lucky towards the end of the evening so a lot of people had already left or were too inebriated to notice her outfit change.

stayathomer · 09/03/2025 21:03

We thought my dad wouldn’t be well enough to be at the wedding but he suddenly picked up (he was terminally ill and we’d rushed the wedding to have him there so it was a big thing!)

on a lesser note I put on weight and couldn’t eat dinner as I couldn’t breathe!

inappropriateraspberry · 09/03/2025 21:03

Groom's family stole all the money left as gifts in cards during the reception.
Another one we ended up waiting for about 2 hours outside on a cool, windy day with no seating. Lots of women in heels desperate to sit down and we weren't allowed into the marquee u into the married couple arrived! Elderly people ended up going off to sit in cars, find a pub etc as nowhere to sit.

Pieceofpurplesky · 09/03/2025 21:02

One that sticks in my mind for all the wrong reasons. I had only met them once before he was a friend of exh.

Everything was filmed.
Was all in a hotel and was very loud, kids screaming through the ceremony.
Food was ham, coleslaw and what looked and tasted like tinned potatoes (one person on our table had glass in their coleslaw). Nothing else, no dessert or anything.
The speeches were awful and all revolved around her farting.
There was a massive fight between both sides.
Bride threw up from booze.

On the way out they were selling the video for £10 each.

chazabella · 09/03/2025 20:59

Went to one where the bride passed out right before the vows (in front of everyone) and had to be rushed to ane (luckily she was fine and was a mixture of stuff) she came back to find everyone had eaten the buffet food and not saved any for her and the new husband

Thejackrussellsrule · 09/03/2025 20:56

Our original wedding venue double booked the reception venue, they told us 2 weeks before and admitted that we'd booked first but the other wedding had more day guests! They suggested a marquee, I said I didn't want a tent, they said it was a lined marquee, I said I didn't want a frilly lined tent!
Miraculously, we managed to find another venue, the original venue paid compensation and we upgraded our food package. We had to ring everyone about the change as this was 1993 and ore Internet!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/03/2025 20:56

We went to a "bring a dish wedding". Everyone over catered, and so much food went to waste. Literally, they could have fed everyone all day again. The B&G filled their freezer, but couldn't give any food away as it had been out all day.

Same wedding, guests who'd arrived the previous evening went out for a pub meal the night before (at our own expense). Pub had an offer of a free bottle of wine with 2 adult main courses. As I was leaving with my wine, the bride snatched it out of my hands and said "we're keeping the wine for the wedding tomorrow". It was my wine!

This is fascinating. What do you mean when you say you witnessed it? Had they never met before? But they were colleagues? I need the gossip on this one.

Yes! Wtf. How??

ItsCalledAConversation · 09/03/2025 20:53

Two couples sneaked off from the evening do and were spotted shagging under a tree in the nearby grounds by the MOB when she nipped out for a ciggie, who then came back into the reception and told everyone

FOB speech included fake foreign accent impersonations

Groom was coked up before the ceremony even started. Best man too. Speeches were rapid fire desperately inappropriate jokes. First dance he pretended to be a gorilla and wouldn’t dance with the bride. They had an awful divorce and still fighting over child custody years later.

FreeRider · 09/03/2025 20:51

My own wedding.

I turn up at the registry office and my brother and his girlfriend (only family there, my mother - lives in Oz, couldn't afford to attend - insisted I invite him, I haven't actually seen him in 5 years. We are not a close family) are there by the entrance, first guests I see...both dressed in dirty jeans and sweatshirts, and my soon-to-be mother in law is plainly horrified. Wedding invite had said formal...my brother then tells me that they won't be able to stay long as they'd left their dog in the car (I have since realised that they weren't actually going to attend, and that the girlfriend basically forced my brother to go while they were out walking the dog, hence the attire).

Wedding ceremony over, I'm stood outside the registry office as guests are coming out, saying hello, posing for pictures, etc. Reception venue is at a hotel about 100 yards down the over side of the road, so guests start walking over. I suddenly notice that my brand new groom is on the other side of the road with a group of his friends, walking down to the hotel...I'm watching in disbelief as they disappear into the hotel. 5 minutes later, I'm still stood there, all the other guests gone, thinking like a fool 'he's going to realise he's left me behind and come back'...nope. I end up walking into my own wedding reception on my own. Groom still hasn't noticed I'm not there, he's too busy getting drunk with his friends...

My brother pisses off 15 minutes later. Good fucking riddance. That was 24 years ago, haven't seen him since.

Groom then throws a major sulk because he doesn't like the way his mother got the hotel to arrange the tables (she paid for the reception). Sulking to the point that other guests are giving him the side eye, and I'm hissing to him 'ffs, it's your wedding, you are supposed to look happy!'

The weather was vile, it rained all day - but that's to be expected in late November in the UK! I can still remember walking down to the hotel, thinking 'this was a mistake'...it was, we lasted a total of 9 years married. Ex husband hadn't really wanted to get married in the first place, he did it to 'shut me up' about it, as he charmingly used to tell his friends!

I was at a wedding where I witnessed the "lightning strike" moment at the reception, when the groom fell in love with one of his colleagues. They literally were talking and then looked at one another and BOOM.
Dreadful shock for the poor bride, who was lovely The couple had been together for ages (about 8 years) as well and were a charming couple.
This was in the August, by November he had moved permanently to live with the colleague and I believe the eventually married and had children.

This is fascinating. What do you mean when you say you witnessed it? Had they never met before? But they were colleagues? I need the gossip on this one.

WhatterySquash · 09/03/2025 20:50

Bride had some kind of terrible stomach bug and managed to get through the ceremony then ran off back to hotel room to throw up, and didn't reappear for the rest of the night, poor thing :(

Wedding with the most bizarre meal ever, there were caterers and serving staff, but they kept just bringing out salad. Not even interesting salad, just leaves. Everyone got a bowl of leaves, ate it, waited, and then the same thing happened again. Eventually we got leaves with some nuts mixed in. No one really wanted to make a fuss or ask what was going on, and there was plenty of alcohol, so eventually we all just gave up on the food and got pissed and danced. Very odd though.

And the one where the couple were both really late, then the best man's speech was a very thinly veiled warning that their relationship was terrible, and finally towards the end of the night the bride's drunk sister started screaming and yelling at her and they had a fight.

Thepossibility · 09/03/2025 20:44

My florist got lost. My DH spent hours trying to find her. My car didn't turn up because the driver went to the pub! So I was very late. My mother told the makeup artist the wrong time so I ended up doing the bridal party makeup. Which caused me to not be at all ready when the photographer came to take the bridal party photos. So the photos are of me not ready. My step mother rang me having a meltdown over my little brother's suit while this was all happening. A funny bit was they parked my DH nan in her wheelchair right in the middle of the aisle so we all had to all stop and navigate our way around her when walking down.

SnakesandKnives · 09/03/2025 20:42

Only really bad one was when the father of the bride stood up to do his speech and opened with (more or less) ‘I’d like to share lovely stories about my daughter with you, but all those opportunities were stolen from me’ (he was not the current husband). He carried on with several comments of this nature for 15 minutes. Absolutely excruciating.

funnier at one wedding halfway through the ceremony a lady fell asleep and feel off her pew into the aisle (not hurt!). What was amusing was that she turned out not to be an invitee but just turned up to local weddings and had done the same thing at the previous one!

Not a wedding I, nor anyone I know was at but... a few years back I was on one of our increasingly regular A+E visits with my now late MIL. She was on a trolley in a corridor and I was just standing there, trying not to get in anyone's way.

Some people who were obviously from a wedding party appeared and after a while we could hear a man wailing somewhere. Eventually he appeared walking down the corridor, being propped up by another man. It was the groom. There had been some kind of accident and the bride had been killed.

It was utterly, indescribably awful, I felt like an absolute intruder on what was, clearly, the worst moment of someone's life but there was nothing I could do and nowhere to go.

Oh no, that is absolutely awful, that poor poor family.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 09/03/2025 20:41

Brides Dad had a heart attack and died in front of her while it was just them waiting for the car to take them to church. She had to go and knock on neighbours doors as she didn't have her phone with her. Was utterly devastating when we all found out why she hadn't arrived

Katieweasel · 09/03/2025 20:40

I was at a wedding on a beautiful sunny summers day. The bride was happily chatting with guests unknowingly standing over an ant's nest. The ants crawled up all over the skirt of the dress between the material and mesh overlay. Hundreds of them. She had to change. Still makes me itch thinking about it.
