Weddings you went to where things went wrong?

Please can you share any times you attended a wedding where things went awry. I’m just keen to avoid any possible issue.

The only one I can think of is where the bride was two hours late. Apparently her family were just really exacting with the make up artist and had a lot of the make up redone/touched up.

We were sat in the Church for aaaaages. It meant that the drinks reception/evening meal was really rushed as the bride and groom really prioritised the dancing.

I went to a wedding reception where there was "entertainment" - a very amateur comedian who spent the whole evening roaming around the room picking on random people and making very personal and "off colour" remarks about them. It was mortifying. I was so anxious about getting noticed by him that I spent the whole evening with my legs crossed not daring to get up to go to the loo. The bride and groom were in stitches but most people just sat looking as uncomfortable as I felt.

It was a bit alternative, middle of nowhere. We had no food all afternoon whilst they had "games & activities" . Everyone was moaning they were starving. Eventually we got to queue outside in the rain early evening to get a plastic bowl of a scoop of curry and rice.
We left as early evening as we were painfully hungry and fed up. they divorced a few years later.

Went to another just evening reception. Music was booming loud. We pulled on the carpark at the hotel and it was loud from inside the car on the carpark. Then there were no extra tables for evening guests so we were all sat on chairs in a line up the corridor adjacent to the disco, so loud you couldn't hear the person next to you, cradling a plate of food on your lap.

These are from a few weddings I’ve been to/a bridesmaid for. Some big, some minor but annoying

  • Bride an hour late due to hair issues
  • photos had to be completely changed and delayed due to an argument with the venue about confetti
  • The WiFi went down so the bar couldn’t take card payments and no one had cash - still had a good evening but bride and groom were gutted and incredibly stressed that no one was dancing and having a good time - took an hour to convince venue to let them use their own alcohol left over from the meal
  • photobooth never arrived
  • dj completely ignored playlist given by bride and groom and did typical wedding party music. Also kept calling the groom the wrong name
  • i was in a bridal party once where we had our hair done. I precurled my hair as my hair is annoying and I know what to do to make it stay in (it also takes about an hour to curl as it’s long and lots of it and didn’t want to hog time) Rest of bridal party’s hair went from curled to straight within two hours. If having hair done professionally I advise checking the longevity of the style as bride was very disappointed her hair dropped to straight by the photos.
  • physical fight between mother of the groom and her ex husband
  • people struggling to get home/to hotel because they hadn’t pre booked taxis in a rural area

One that sticks in my mind for all the wrong reasons. I had only met them once before he was a friend of exh.

Everything was filmed.
Was all in a hotel and was very loud, kids screaming through the ceremony.
Food was ham, coleslaw and what looked and tasted like tinned potatoes (one person on our table had glass in their coleslaw). Nothing else, no dessert or anything.
The speeches were awful and all revolved around her farting.
There was a massive fight between both sides.
Bride threw up from booze.

On the way out they were selling the video for £10 each.

If they send it to that TV programme which shows 'funny' videos they may make far more money!

As the verger for a busy church I probably see more weddings than most people. The one that sticks in my memory was when the bride was 1 year and 2 hours late. Yes, you read that right! I think they must have copied and pasted a friend's order of service from the previous year and forgot to change the year date. That was the year late. The other two hours were because the vintage car that was bringing the bride broke down some miles away. It is a rural area and it took some time to get a replacement there. However the driver 'put his foot down' trying to make up time and they got stopped by the police for speeding which further delayed her arrival. The vicar gave the waiting congregation a lecture about the history of the church while they were waiting

Flopsy145 · 09/03/2025 22:25

My shoe broke after the ceremony, luckily my mum had borrowed a neutral pair of mine for the day and was about to switch to flats so I wore the heels. Take a spare pair of shoes!

We’ve been to two weddings with a mandatory (!) ceilidh after the dinner. At both of them we made our excuses & ducked out.

That's called a wedding reception. Why did you leave?

Mama2many73 · 09/03/2025 22:23

NaomhPadraigin · 09/03/2025 12:12

My brother was at one where the bride's mother had a heart attack at the dinner. Very sadly she passed in the hospital later that night.
Don't think there is anything you can do to avoid this, it must be very rare.

I know a female friend (bride)whose dad felt unwell between the church and the reception and he actually suffered a stroke. Thankfully quickly to hospital and survived.
A friend of a friend was at a wedding and the wedding was late as the grooms mum had sadly passed away early that morning after being rushed to hospital the night before. Such sad events on what should be a wonderful day x

Downwiththecrumpets81 · 09/03/2025 22:17

Probably the worst one I’ve been to was of my ex housemates. They were both good friends of mine and a few days before the wedding the female friend told me that she’d been secretly shagging her finance’s best friend for ages, and they were in love. I told her she needed the call the wedding off and she was like “oh no, I can’t, it’s too late for that”. I was only 19 (they were older), and in hindsight I probably should have told my male housemate about what was going on, but I just didn’t feel able to drop that kind of bomb. So they went through with it and then she left him for his mate a couple of weeks later.

Sockmate123 · 09/03/2025 22:17

Bride dislocated her knee during first dance, had to go immediately to A& E.
Bride left groom at altar (she was having an affair). A couple of years later they married!!
Father of Bride kicking up night before wedding that if his new girlfriend wasnt at top table he wasn't attending....
I worked in events management so I've seen a lot 🙈

autisticbookworm · 09/03/2025 22:14

A good friend of mine was getting married. None of us really liked the groom but wanted things to go well for her. I worked in a hotel so tried to give her some tips on dos and don'ts but she was very clear her wedding would be as she wanted.
The venue nearly didn't open after failing an environmental health check . She got married at 11, no food until 5 and nowhere to go. The venue was a small pub they had hired, no outside area everyone literally sat in their seats for hours. B&G didn't want the expense of a band or DJ so put a playlist together but they were very snobby about music so it was 70% b and album tracks no one had heard of. So no dancing, no atmosphere. Grooms scuzzy friends arranged for a drug dealer to do a drop off and the drugged up men (including groom) started fighting with brides relatives.

Thankfully she left him eventually.

I've told this story before but it fits nicely

My ex BIL shot his brother ( my EH) at our wedding reception

He spent night in hospital having bullet removed from leg
I spent night in estranged parents spare room

Wild West Scotland lol 1983

You win

ViolettaDePensy · 09/03/2025 22:12

I went to a wedding where the bride's parents were divorced. She was in tears because her father was late - refused to start till he arrived (45 minutes late). It was a a civil ceremony and another couple were waiting so it was very rushed.

I sat next to the bride's mother who brought her best friend (!) to the wedding. They were like non funny Ad Fab. The MOB spent the entire evening swiping on Tinder, with her mate, like a couple of teenagers.

They got seriously pissed and she started slagging off her daughter really loudly. I ended up pushing them both outside and getting them into an Uber as they'd reduced the bride to tears. Her father didn't turn up at the reception and her sister left early.

The marriage didn't last a year.

Beebsta · 09/03/2025 22:04

At my pool-side wedding at a small resort in Spain. One of my DH’s friends who I had never met pushed one of the groomsmen into the pool. Only about an hour after the ceremony, during the drinks reception. I was well pissed off! My exact words were “it’s not a pool party FFS”. What a fucking knob! He never even had the balls to apologise to me. The groomsman was deeply apologetic. The knob came to visit several years later and brought flowers but I’m not sure if he directly apologised.

At almost midnight, a bunch of people got into the pool of their own accord, which I was perfectly fine with and was lots of fun.

Supergirl1958 · 09/03/2025 21:57

I went to the evening reception of a wedding where the bride and groom had gone to a&e because the groom had acute alcohol poisoning from drinking a bottle of whisky the night before the wedding!!

Jellytots1840 · 09/03/2025 21:51

Went to wedding of ex. He was wearing neck collar as he and fiancee were in a car crash a few days before the wedding. Order of Service cards were left behind and had to be fetched from house. Brides family didn't attend as they were Jehovah's Witnesses but MOB had made wedding cake that was rock solid and took loads of attempts to cut. MOG cornered me in Ladies to tell me what a disaster it was. Hotel lost key to room where their luggage was stored so they were late leaving for honeymoon, got diverted from Venice as unable to land due to plague of locusts (you really couldn't make it up!). To top it off photographer had accident with photos so we all had to turn up two weeks later at church to take more photos, however most of grooms male friends were playing cricket so didn't attend. Needless to say the marriage didn't last.
Also went to a friends wedding where brides married next door neighbour had been to school with married best man and they hadn't seen each other since then. Discovered in disabled toilets by Best Man's wife with Best Man's trousers round his ankles and they were getting "re-acquainted ". Best man's wife whacked brides next door neighbour round the head with handbag and stormed out followed by Best Man chasing her down the road, pulling his trousers up as he ran....

LavendersBlueeee · 09/03/2025 21:49

Went to a wedding where the bridesmaids hair caught fire. She was stood too close a large candle and her hair was fully up in flames before she realised. She had her hair down which caused the back of her dress to catch fire too, although that was only minor compared to her hair. Poor girl.

Bloom15 · 09/03/2025 21:47

I didn't get fed at one- and I was 8 months pregnant! They did a self serve buffet and tables were called up. But people just took what they wanted - meat, vegetarian etc. We were the last table and there were a handful of sweet potato wedges. I wanted to cry.

The table let me have the cakes that cake round though!

ilovesushi · 09/03/2025 21:46

Another thing that got messed up was ordering taxis in advance. Make sure if they are for after midnight they you are really clear about which day you mean.

ilovesushi · 09/03/2025 21:45

Our wedding cake was green. Lesson learned from this is put all requests/ instructions in writing. I ordered over the phone and the person on the other end heard "green" not "cream". I thought they seemed a bit hesitant, but couldn't figure out why. Guests thought it was a nod to DH's Irish roots. Gutted we never got the traditional photo of us with cake. Luckily I found it funny at the time and it tasted great.

StScholastica · 09/03/2025 21:42

My friend went to one where they had a tame owl fly up the aisle to deliver a ring or something, but a bridesmaid got all flappy and it got caught up in the bridesmaids hair. Poor owl.

Cel77 · 09/03/2025 21:42

The bride and groom had an argument before all their guests during the meal. She slapped him and ran to the toilets crying. Something to do with a teenage boy from his family bothering a teenage girl from her family. They kissed and made up during their first dance though. Her dad made a pass at me . When I think about it, it was horrid really. Early noughties.

Cheaply undercatered and ran out of food.

Yes been to one like this. Half the guests or more had absolutely nothing to eat. Us, toddler and cousin all had zero, was starving and spent the rest of the night contemplating leaving. I was young and polite then. If it was now I'd have just gone home or out hunting for a drive through. It sticks in my head as the shittest wedding I have ever been too unfortunately just because the entire night was moaning how hungry we was and trying to think how we could eat.

Inviting more guests than you can offord to feed or more guests than the venue can fit in. Also been to evening do where about 30 guests had to sit in a side annex sharing one sofa as we didn't fit in the hall. No idea what that reception was like as effectively impossible to get into the main venue room. When it finished we went in to say goodbye and they had FOUR tables and 150 guests! So about 70 people stood in the car park all night. However I'm sure both brides and grooms had a lovely time totally oblivious

Barneysmomma · 09/03/2025 21:37

The night before our wedding it started to snow - heavily. Our witnesses live at the top of a hill that's notoriously slippery in the winter.
The following morning it had stopped snowing but there was 4inches of the stuff in our village. Luckily not a problem for us (4wd) but our witnesses couldn't get to the registry office.
The registry office were open surprisingky and said if you can get here we'll marry you but you need to bring witnesses- we can't supply any. We ended up ringing round the neighbours to drum up 2 emergency witnesses. I nearly ended up getting married in wellies.
It was a very lovely ceremony and certainly a memorable day!

I forgot the one where the bride's parents stayed for the wedding, came to the reception for all of five minutes and then left "to get back to the dogs" so there was no father of the bride speech and empty chairs at the top table. Bride cried for a bit but then wiped her eyes and enjoyed her evening.

This is like my in laws!! They left the wedding early because ‘the gins are better in our hotel’ so they went to drink there. MiL left wife while she was getting ready in the morning too, because her sister needed a taxi booking. The photographer ended up getting my wife into her dress!!
