Is this rude if you were a guest?

If you were a guest in someone's house and they went up to bed without saying goodnight or telling you they were going to bed/not coming back downstairs would you think that was rude?

OP posts:

@ilovesooty

2 posts, one saying I was interested in why OP is childless but said she needed childcare, and another saying I reported the thread is hardly a "song and dance" or persistent.

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 08/03/2025 11:21

I’d wonder if they had been tired and just followed their normal routine (especially if older / set in their ways) and that they might kick themselves in the morning if they realised they made their guest feel bad.
It is still kinda rude, but I could see it happening.

They got tired and went to bed. Nothing to see here

And it's pretty normal to say something!
'Right, it's lovely to have you here but it's getting past our bedtime. Do you have everything you need? See you in the morning'

Silence? Rude

You started this post at 11.30ish at night. If you'd been invited to stay at my house I'd have been pretty fed up with you for keeping me up chatting till nearly midnight. I'd have been making 'its bedtime' noises about 10.30, some people go to bed early - you were rude for not taking their hints on board and going off yourself.
I would definitely have gone to bed (though I would have said goodnight) and left you as you obviously hadn't picked up the signals that it was long past my bedtime.
ASK them what time they go to bed and avoid the same situation tonight.

What signals? It doesn't sound like there were any. And 11.30 isn't late for everyone, nor is 10.30 'bedtime' for everyone (especially not grown adults on a Friday night). If the hosts needed to go to bed they should have used their words and said so instead of making a guest feel so uncomfortable. So rude and I think they're crap hosts for doing this.

Spudthespanner · 08/03/2025 10:27

Who said it's the sole intent?

If a thread smells funny to me, sometimes I have a look at the OP's posting history. Oftentimes they are trolls.

If the thread doesn't seem off, it doesn't occur to me to look at what else they've posted.

But 'smelling funny' is a very subjective thing. And you can't always jump to the conclusion just because of apparent inconsistency between threads that a poster is a troll. OP has explained the childcare thing.

DarkMagicStars · 07/03/2025 23:40

I’d think they had had enough of me and wanted me to leave.

How long have you been a guest? When do you leave?

I'd be interested to know what time this was. How long did you visit for? did you have dinner with them?

My guess is they'd given @OP clues they were tired or wanted to go to bed but OP didnt take any of the hints and frustration they went to bed.

OP said they'd vanished a good hour before she started the thread.
She's their guest, they were rude to just vanish. They're adults with tongues in their heads, saying "i really need to get to bed now, see you in the morning" isn't hard.

What's an "it's bedtime" noise? Just say you're going to bed for goodness sake.

Why advise something so stupid?! Do you like making trouble in real life?

Do you get jokes in real life?

Only an idiot would think that was a serious suggestion.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/03/2025 11:02

"you were rude for not taking their hints on board and going off yourself."

Ridiculous. She's not a child, she goes to bed when she's tired. As do you!

You could just report instead of making a song and dance about it and indulging in persistent troll hunting.

Aw, thank you.

Just catching up on your thread. Will read on.

I'm just wondering whether I should say something tomorrow

I would just say I didn't realise that you'd gone to bed last night as you didn't say anything when you left the room.
It is most odd for both the hosts to leave like that and not say anything. Even if exhausted they could just say that and that they are going to bed, it just takes a second. Hope you find out why they did that.

tryingtobesogood · 08/03/2025 10:32

Foostit · 07/03/2025 23:39

Unless they’ve passed out drunk or fallen asleep then yes, very rude!

That would be my sister. Would pop to the loo and not come back

BunnyLake · 08/03/2025 10:31

Spudthespanner · 08/03/2025 10:29

I do the same. I don't make up children I don't have however which is what it seemed like OP was doing.

Instead she just has a weird set up where she agrees to babysit her niece and then doesn't and needs to arrange another person to babysit the child she was going to babysit.

Although I don’t go in for all the checking up on previous details I would have thought getting an alternative carer for a niece was the parent’s job not the aunt’s🤷‍♀️

Floppyflippers · 08/03/2025 05:37

Have some people got nothing better to do than go trawling through a poster's history looking for a gotcha moment. Jesus wept. I thought troll hunting was frowned upon on here. What's happened on this thread is very definitely that.

I agree, why do people care so much about what people are posting on an anonymous internet forum? Absolutely bizarre.

BunnyLake · 08/03/2025 10:29

Cerulean67 · 08/03/2025 10:23

All these people who come on to MN threads apparently with the sole intent of catching the OP out in some way. Whatever happened to hobbies?

That is their hobby.

Spudthespanner · 08/03/2025 10:29

BlackWhiteCircle · 08/03/2025 10:04

@Spudthespanner if it helps, I regularly change the amount/ages of children if it’s not relevant to the post I’m making as my life is so bizarre and fucked up that I’d clearly be recognisable, and if people listed everything that happened to me in my life they would assume I was making it up as surely that can’t all happen to one person. Sometimes life is shit!

In my family/friend group people often just creep off for a power nap or off to bed whenever they feel like it. Though we would usually tell the others what we were doing. Not always though, and it wouldn't really be expected. Usually if one of us is tired we might fall asleep wherever we are sitting, so it would be obvious that they would then go to bed.

Unless you were supposed to be doing an activity or having a meal or something, going to bed whenever you want is fine.

They probably felt a bit embarrassed they were knackered, tried to have a quick power nap but then just slept through.

Just make a light-hearted joke 'oh, we thought you'd run away'. Then once you've had a chuckle just say do let us know when you're going to bed next time. I'm sure it wasn't meant rudely.
