Would you be grossed out by homemade baked good in care package?

I am helping my sister put together care packages for her wedding. She is paying for the wedding party to stay in a posh hotel for a few nights. We are going to leave little care packages on the bed. I have an exceptional brownie recipe and was going to leave a trio of favours in the box. But sister’s SIL says she would never eat a homemade treat due to hygiene reasons.

obviously I will be clinically clean and wil even wear a hair net as I couldn’t think of anything worse than someone finding a hair.

Who is being weird?

I’d eat it. Shop cakes taste like cotton wool.

LoraNorder · 08/03/2025 20:47

I'd love it if- it's probably going to taste a million times better than chemical-laden shop-bought stuff.

anon666 · 08/03/2025 20:33

Why bother, if she's going to be like that? You can buy baked goods for next to nothing. They won't be as nice, but it sounds like they won't be appreciated anyway.

Save your energy!

And I would love homemade stuff but am completely un-germphobic.

AuntyHumperdink · 08/03/2025 20:20

If they look good I’ll eat them, it’s never that deep.

lemontova · 08/03/2025 20:16

I think that all sounds lovely, just go for it and if anyone doesn’t want to eat them they won’t.

NiftyKoala · 08/03/2025 20:12

Personally OP I'd love it. I love love love food gifts.

GoldOP · 08/03/2025 20:11

If she knows you I don’t see the issue but if she doesn’t I get her point. Sometimes people bring homemade stuff into work and have to admit I eat it if I trust the bakers hygiene and steer clear if not!

Poppyseeds79 · 08/03/2025 20:04

I'd absolutely eat it! But then again I ate a muffin I dropped on the train floor a few weeks ago too 😅

(Didn't die from it)

How some people see a lovely kid gesture……

Sad to live like that.

*kind

Flopsy145 · 08/03/2025 19:51

I would eat it!

When I saw the title I immediately thought of care homes. Why the hell are “care packages” a thing? Or even needed? Sounds OTT to me. I think most of them will end up squashed in the boot on the way home. Waste of money.
if care packages are needed why not a box of chocolates or biscuits?
All a bit twee and a bit show-offy imo.

I’d eat them, and then I’d eat the ones left by the OCD people! 😂

HarrietsweetHarriet · 08/03/2025 19:36

I'd be delighted to eat home-baked goods. No hygiene hang ups here. Never been ill from eating things from school bake sales, markets, from friends or anywhere else.

Make them, tie a label on saying "Homemade by BusyTrayBake, contains nuts and gluten" and then either people eat them or they don't eat them, their choice.

I would happily eat them

This. I would love a homemade brownie . Yum.

It's clearly a divisive subject!

They sound like lovely brownies but I think it would be more in keeping with a bit of luxury if you purchased some individually wrapped brownies or cake slices - the sort of thing you'd find in a nice hotel or at the till in a waitrose cafe. Won't be too eyewateringly pricey for the quantities you're doing, and will ensure that those who won't eat home made, will eat them. You could always do the home made ones as a little extra for those you personally know and know would appreciate and eat them.

Nooo even Waitrose cake is not a patch on home made! I’d be so disappointed. Put me down for a home made one please !

Family member had a wedding where all the puddings were provided by family and friends. It was like a huge bake sale and hugely enjoyed. Everybody lived.

LoztWorld · 08/03/2025 18:10

Only on mumsnet is this a thing! People here (and your sisters friend evidently) are incredible at finding a reason not to enjoy every nice thing in life.

Make the lovely brownies and if a handful of uptight joyless weirdos want to pass on them it’s their loss

FartyAnimal · 08/03/2025 18:08

I will only eat home made cakes - mmm r Kipling can fuck off!

Sinkintotheswamp · 08/03/2025 18:06

Yabu. I never eat homemade items unless it's someone I know well and know their kitchen is really clean. I certainly wouldn't eat a random cake.
I don't have the time or patience to risk being ill.

nel I always refused to eat dodgy food when I was drunk in my youth too. Never had a kebab or anything like that. I am never relaxed......

Psychostates · 08/03/2025 18:02

For clarification:

'It's generally not recommended to wash pet dishes with human dishes for several reasons: Cross-Contamination: Pet dishes can harbor bacteria, parasites, and other pathogens that may not be present in human dishes. Washing them together increases the risk of cross-contamination.10 Apr 2022'

No idea how accurate it is, but I don't like the idea of washing them together in a sink. Washing human dishes first, then pet ones afterwards seems better.

washed the cats dishes with her own,
this I never understand the horror, my dogs bowls go in the dishwasher with everything else, they're being WASHED.
When my DD was at primary I was always called upon to fill the cake stand, quickest stall to sell out, no weirdo judgy types.

Dishwasher, yes. Sink full of steeping dirty water, no. Dirty unclean kitchen, no. Judge away.

I don’t expect you need to turn many invites down.

Yes, that sounds right.

@BettyBardMacDonald

I'm never so desperate for a brownie or cake or whatever anyway, so passing them up is no hardship.
Some people place a higher value on snacking and aren't bothered about where the food comes from. They can have at it.

I'd rather munch on a cat hair cupcake than spend ten minutes with someone who actually felt the need to type that out. Did you not read that back to yourself and think, oops, that made me sound like a judgmental pillock?
