To say don’t put dog poo in bags

…if you’re not going to take the bag with you or stick it in the bin.

Went for a walk in local woodland for the first time since last summer and the path is strewn with poo filled bags. It’s really revolting. If you’re not going to take it home, it would be far better to flick it into the undergrowth and let it decompose. Leaving the bagged poo is surely the worst option?

Local authorities and charities have to arrange dog poo collection by the tonne and it costs ten of thousands of pounds per site.Charities don’t like to advertise how much of their funding goes on disposing of this hazardous waste in case it impacts donations. I know land owners who are unable to grow crops on fields next to footpaths due to the high nitrate levels caused by high levels of dogs using the area. I have met people who think they are doing a favour by bagging and leaving it ‘for the wardens to pick up’. You can tell natural areas that have a problem; look near the public car parks and note the type of vegetation encouraged by dog waste- the oooosite of what our natural Heath and woodland need. There are 10-15 million dogs in the uk. We seriously need to think how we can cope properly.PS I am a dog lover!

Many councils are actually removing dog poo bins permanently. I guess because they don’t want to spend money on getting them emptied. People can’t use their wheelie bins for disposal - no dog excrement allowed, and there’s often no dog poo bins at parks/woods, so I’m not sure where you’re supposed to dispose of them.

Mine go in the garden and when they go for a walk. Always pick it up when out and about and put in the dog poo bin.

Same, and that is fine.
Scrubbing the pavement with bleach, or only letting your dog poo at home - there is no need.

People should just train their dogs to shit in their own gardens and there wouldn’t be dog shit all over public footpaths. It’s revolting.

Can you train yourself to only shit at home? Never get caught short when out? Or somehow train your baby to only poo at home.
At least you can justify it to yourself. You can't explain it to a dog.

I run kids' cycling sessions on a council owned facility in a park. The cycle area is fenced and gated and there are "no dogs" signs all over the place. Yet every single week I have to pick up multiple piles of other people's dog shit before the kids can ride, probably about 50% of which has been bagged but then dumped. I think I'd rather deal with the unbagged to be honest as I just flick that into the grass, but I have to actually pick the bags up and walk across the park to the bin with it. It drives me mad. The whole of the rest of the park is dog friendly so why not stick to that, and why go to the trouble of bagging the poo and then dropping it in the middle of an area that is obviously used by kids? I like dogs but their humans not so much.

Hopefully these will be paid for by a dog tax because I don't want that cost added onto my council tax thanks. Bloody entitled dog owners. Just pick it up and put it in your own bin at home.

Dog poo can be put in general waste bins. It all gets processed the same.

With so many dogs and everywhere being dog friendly it’s about time there were dog poo bins everywhere and emptied regularly

The worst is dog shit being put into bags and then hung up on trees or gates. I’d rather the shit was left alone than having to see that.

YeOldeGreyhound · 06/03/2025 22:33

Horse poo is pretty harmful when it is left in the road. Am speaking as a former biker.

Crumpleton · 06/03/2025 22:30

While it's never nice to see a pile of any animal poo the difference between horse and dog is horses are herbivores making their poo pretty much harmful unlike dogs.

Horses are vegetarian and their poo breaks down a lot easier than dog poo. Nothing smells quite as bad as dog and cat poo. This is because of their diet. Fox poo can smell bad but there is not so much of it about.

My dog has no problem finding fox poo to roll in fairly often!

HangingOver · 06/03/2025 22:08

straight into the nearest Vladimir (the poo-tin)

Round of applause for this

HangingOver · 06/03/2025 22:05

AngelinaFibres · 06/03/2025 15:58

Someone with a horse will be on soon to say that horses are vegetarian and therefore their poo is the equivalent of stepping in Chanel no 5. It very much isn't

And happily my dog makes a fair dent in our local horse poo problem.

Mines takes 2 months. I left one in my jacket. When I went back to it, it was dust

I thought at first you left a full one in your jacket! Hope I wrong about that.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the size of the bags you use to pick your horse’s crap up with.

i saw someone picking up after their St Bernard once, and I said "you don't need a poo bag, you need a carrier bag." They agreed.

HRTQueen · 06/03/2025 19:44

If the lazy fuckers can’t be bothered to take their digs shit home or put in a bin the won’t bother flicking it under a bush

they simply don’t care and are lazy selfish disgusting slobs

NormasArse · 06/03/2025 19:43

Weefox · 06/03/2025 15:37

I often see full poo bags hanging on trees. Can owners not just walk to the nearest bin and drop them in...?

What's wrong with this country? Filth and plastic left everywhere - no respect for others, no respect for nature. Just so sad.

I walked 5 miles on a well known trail today. Not a single bin anywhere.

I took my bags home though.

CorduroySituation · 06/03/2025 19:39

AlmostAJillSandwich · 06/03/2025 14:29

If they're going to leave it, i'd rather it is bagged, then i can't not see it and step in it and get dog shit on me. Most dog poo bags are biodegradeable/compostable.

No they are not. Most are cheap plastic.

Many of the "biodegradable" ones will still take over 200 years to degrade and probably choke some wildlife way before that happens.

Dicky bags are great - we never go on a long countryside walk without one. Local walks mostly have plenty of bins along the way, but if we’re not sure we take a dicky bag with us there too. I could never feel comfortable clipping even a double bagged poo to my rucksack, but a neoprene container is fine.

ed to say if you don’t want to click on the link (and who could blame you?) then just Google ‘dicky bags’. I suppose a thermal baby food container would do a similar job and might be cheaper?

Dog poo bags left behind is the same as throwing litter in the countryside - pretty disgusting. We’re coming to the time when lambs are calves are being born. They are curious and can chew the bags. It can kill them.
We have footpaths across our land. I’m sick to death of having to pick up bags of poo from the lazy arsed skanks that think it’s ok to leave them pushed into a stone wall, in the undergrowth or hanging on a fence. You are disgusting. Shouldn’t have a dog and shouldn’t come to the countryside.

I think you'll find rolling in fix or dog shit is infinitely worse than rolling in horse shit.

It’s all the same, all equally repellent and hard to remove.

cryinglaughing · 06/03/2025 18:55

BIossomtoes · 06/03/2025 18:24

There certainly is. Cleaning up a dog that’s rolled in horseshit is horrible.

Okay I’ll concede to the fact that not every non horse owner finds horse shit offensive. But I imagine a vast majority don’t particularly want to be dealing with it.

There are many people in the village I ride through who rush out with their bucket and spade 😂

VenusClapTrap · 06/03/2025 18:48

I live in a National Park. The National Park authority have asked people to stop doing ‘stick and flick’ because the sheer numbers of dogs now present are producing so much waste that the nutrient levels of the delicate ecosystem are changing. Rare wildflowers that are reliant on low nutrient soils are being replaced by others, lusher growth is crowding them out. The rare butterflies and other insects that rely on the rare wildflowers as their host plants have seen a corresponding fall in numbers.
