Partner Freaked Out By Women Who Fart/Poo (so yes, all women)

Basically the title - I have been with my partner for almost 8 years and he is a wonderful partner and Dad to our children. BUT - he has never farted in front of me and I have never DARED to fart in front of him. I have never heard him fart even once. He is completely freaked out by the concept that women fart/poo. I pooped a lot in labour with our baby and he pretended like it never happened and has never once acknowledged it. He says he feels this way because of how he was brought up - his parents were exceptionally strict about farting/burping and he used to get in lots of trouble for it, so he finds it really rude/disrespectful and it freaks him out. Our sister in law burps all the time and he will literally get up and leave the room because he can’t stand it. I don’t WANT to fart in front of him particularly but I still worry about one slipping out because he’d be totally disgusted and I’d be mortified. Is it unreasonable to think that after 8 years together he would have relaxed a bit?!

That must be good for you having to keep it held in!

I'm pleased to say my family find farting absolutely hilarious and laughing is good for the soul.

PandaTime · 06/03/2025 00:12

Everyone is different. DH and I don't intentionally fart in front of each other. To me it is rude to purposely force your stink on others against their will.

we laugh at the dog’s farts as well as our own. He’s tiny so the are high pitched and squeaky. Then he turns his head round to have a look/sniff at what just happened. The dog also likes farts and burps that we do. He’ll move to sniff your arse or mouth. It’s funny.

I can’t imagine sitting around with gut ache in my own home because farting was banned. Even my PILs would fart in front of us and laugh.

You and your husband and your dog are thoroughly disgusting the whole lot of yer. Smelling each other's farts my arse.

nonumbersinthisname · 06/03/2025 00:09

I grew up in a household where burps and farts were funny - in private. We knew not to do them deliberately in front of our grandmother or in public and to excuse ourself from the room if we felt one brewing and to say pardon me if one slipped out accidentally. But between mum and dad and us kids - totally normal including marks out of 10 for the sound.

DH is the total opposite about all bodily functions, even to the point of never wandering around in a state of undress. he’s never farted in front of me (awake). As consequence, I now try and remember not to break wind with abandon if he’s in the room. Although sometimes it’s hard to break the habit of a lifetime and we have a bad case of carpet frogs in the living room. Grin

Alan Bennett, is that you writing posts on MN again?

Blogswife · 06/03/2025 00:04

I find people farting & burping in public deeply unattractive
I’ve never deliberately done either in front of someone else but if one slipped out then that’s another thing !
I also pooped during labour and my ex never once mentioned it - I think that was kind & respectful
I’m sure if it was an accident your DH would understand but otherwise I’m with him on this

Get him a dog. They don't care whether you're freaked out about farting or not.

Doesn't sound like it's juts women- he also doesn't do it. Not everyone assumes that letting rip in front of others is natural and are comfortable with it. Personally, I would never 'force' it- but if one accidentally came out, whatever. I also don't particularly enjoy when people revel in making huge noises/ smells

Fart in bed loudly then pull the duvet over his head quickly allowing him to immerse himself in the rich flavors.

Dreamskies · 05/03/2025 23:50

You procreated with a man-child that can’t accept that women fart and poo?! Jesus…. that was a daft move!

I couldn’t be with a man so lacking in wisdom. As for the couples who are “horrified” that other people actually use the loo in front of each other… I feel sorry for you. Clearly you’re not going to be looking after one another in true times of need. Sad really.

AmythestBangle · 05/03/2025 23:48

I have had two colonoscopy preps. Neither time did I have to fart outside the bathroom. Yes I did stay in there a while.

bratsummer · 05/03/2025 23:46

I wonder if this song is about your DH? Or maybe more men than we think are triggered by this www.instagram.com/reel/DFdAatsOLYV/?igsh=M3M4dTl6eHg5Mjkx

You say he’s completely freaked out by the idea that women fart/poo, not that he’s freaked out by the thought of anybody else doing it? I mean most people don’t go around thinking about other people’s bodily functions, I guess (unless you are one of those horrified that anyone uses a toilet not in their own home). Has he said that it’s women in particular? Are you saying that he doesn’t like the idea of them having real bodies, with pee and snot and other discharges as well?

How the fuck is he going to cope if his partner has to do colonoscopy prep

AmythestBangle · 05/03/2025 23:40

I have been married 20 years, I think I have heard DH fart maybe four times and only in his sleep. I would imagine he would probably say the same for me. We did joke about DS's farts when he was little though, it's not a taboo subject. Just polite to try and not do it in front of anyone. Like if DH does a poo in a bathroom I am going to be going into any time soon he will open the window. But we can mention bowel issues like adults eg if we are suffering from constipation or the runs.

Hitchinkitchen · 05/03/2025 23:37

Breaking wind happens a lot in this house. We’re a right farty couple alright. 😂. We don’t do it in front of anyone else though.

You are married to a properly brought up man. And your SIL is a slob.

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 05/03/2025 23:35

I don't fart in front of DH or any people apart from my daughter. DH lets it out of both ends with no issue but I like to retain a feminine mystique. Of course, when he leaves the room I may try and sneak one out and sometimes I get an "I heard that". Rare!

I'm more on his side. It's not polite. I don't want to hear it or smell it. But I'll get over it if I do. Within seconds.

Tirry · 05/03/2025 23:30

I try to avoid farting around people,
not just DH. If I do accidentally fart, I apologise. That’s just manners isn’t it?

CheekyHobson · 05/03/2025 23:30

That sounds very stressful and I agree he might need therapy.

I say this as someone who dislikes free-farting households (I find the smell and noise unpleasant) but if one slips out (to be expected with two kids in the house), I’m not going to be traumatised or make a big deal of it.

An accidental one certainly wouldn’t be a deal-breaker with my partner, though I appreciate that he is very good at not doing them in front of me.

I’m sure I pooed during birth but it wasn’t a topic anyone felt the need to discuss afterwards. I’m not sure that never mentioning it again is a sign he’s too deeply freaked out to “acknowledge” it.

ItShouldntHappenToMeYet · 05/03/2025 22:43

I'm with your DH on this one. I'd die a thousand deaths before I would intentionally fart in front of anyone, or pooing in any situation where another person would know I was pooing.
I cannot understand for the life of me, why couples think it's ok to use the lavatory while one is in the bath/abluting.
And as for baths in the bedroom...

Yep this 100%

Rollercoaster1920 · 05/03/2025 23:29

Your husband had been brought up with manners. There is a massive difference between knowing people fart and poo, and thinking it is acceptable to fart or poo in front of someone.

A person n with manners would not purposely fart Infront of someone. It is disrespectful. But if someone were to fart accidentally or due to a medical condition it would be politely ignored.
If someone gets a lighter out on their rip roaring arse explosion and laughs about it then they do not have good manners. Leaving the room would be an acceptably polite way of demonstrating that it shows disrespect, without the need for a direct confrontation.

Team silent (orc at least in the toilet) fart here. YABU

Oh dear lord OP, never have children with this man.

How will he cope with nappies and winding babies?

What an idiot.

Especially if the baby is a girl.....
