To cancel surgery due to DC coldsore

Mamamover · 05/03/2025 17:35

Hey guys

As the title says. I have surgery in a couple of days. NHS, something i’ve been waiting for a number of years.

DC is 15 months old and has got what appears to be a coldsore on DC top lip.
I’m absolutely panic stricken and guilt ridden I feel like I should now cancel my surgery.

Why? Because I can’t police it. During nappy changes they always grab their bits and i’m so worried about them transferring to the nappy area. This can happen during a first coldsore outbreak as the body is still building up antibodies. My solution is to pop socks on DC hands during nappy changes while this is current.

DH has said to not be ridiculous and he will police it and go ahead with surgery. However I know DH will forget to pop the socks on DC hands and I just think I should just cancel because i’m going to be worried sick.

AIBU?

Please get some help for your anxiety. With kindness, you are being absolutely ridiculous.

AluckyEllie · 05/03/2025 20:13

Completely missing the point here but surely socks on hands doesn’t stop anything? If she touched mouth and then genitals the risk is still the same with or without hand covering… it’s why you wash towels etc post a cold sore and don’t share cups- it’s transferred on fabric/surfaces too.

But yes likelihood of it being cold sore minimal and you need to have the op.

KrisAkabusi · 05/03/2025 20:03

You were told in your previous thread that you were massively overreacting and being completely unfair on your child about your fear of coldsores. By everyone. This is the same thing again. You are massively overreacting .

Ah, a bit of AS here. OP has severe health anxiety and OCD relating to contamination and also cold sores. Add is October she'd never even kissed her one year old 🥺

I hope she has since got the poor child's sake, but clearly there is a lot going on here.

OP, this is your OCD talking, your child is at no risk. Please have your surgery.

Oh it’s that poster. Who has never kissed her baby and has a panic if anyone tries to do so.

in that case I seriously doubt it’s a cold sore. Where would he have got it from?

even if it is in a couple of days it will have scabbed over and won’t be an issue.

Msmoonpie · 05/03/2025 19:57

I think you need some help with your anxiety.

Not that you’ll get it on the NHS mind.

Some private sessions may really help you though.

MumonabikeE5 · 05/03/2025 19:56

Trust your husband.

bestimitation · 05/03/2025 19:53

I don't want to add to a pile on as you obviously have massive health anxiety but everyone is right - the chances of A - DC actually having a cold sore rather than just a random spot and B - even if it is a cold sore transferring it to their genitals is tiny,

If it helps, I have suffered horrendously with cold sores my entire life and I am sure as a careless teen and young adult I often had active sores on my face and didn't take a lot of care but to this day, as a woman in her 50s, I have never transferred the herpes virus in the way you fear. My understanding is that that particular transmission method is more associated with adult activities... not a baby swiping a hand from mouth to groin. I was also scared of giving it to my babies. I haven't.

I don't know what your surgery is but we all know how long it will take to get another slot if you cancel and it could be something that gets worse and has a far greater impact on your ability to care for DC if you don't have this operation now.

So, gently, OP please do what you know already is right, trust your DH to look after DC and focus on your operation and recovery.

nodramaplz · 05/03/2025 19:36

You need to let go of the control more x

DazzyRascale · 05/03/2025 19:35

What the fuck have I have just read? One of the most self-absorbed, bonkers things I have ever read.

If you're that anxious, please cancel the surgery and give it to someone who'd be more appreciative

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 05/03/2025 19:26

You're being a fucking Muppet. You know you're being a fucking Muppet because otherwise you wouldn't have started this thread inviting people to call you a fucking Muppet.

Listen to that inner voice, it's right. It knows you're scared of surgery and are looking for any excuse to cancel it. It's screaming at you, "Stop being a fucking Muppet."

Ffs OP, give your head a wobble and talk to a friend.
Obviously you need support and this really isn't the place to get it.
A cold sore is a cold sore and you probably have come into contact with it anyway.
The Herpes virus association have very good info and a helpline if you feel you need it.

MummytoE · 05/03/2025 18:28

You are contemplating cancelling an operation you have waited years for so you can be there to make sure you're husband puts socks on baby's hands during nappy changes?? Absolute madness. If you do cancel because of this you do not deserve to have it rescheduled.

CharityShopMensGlasses · 05/03/2025 18:24

It sounds really stressful OP, You can always get the little plaster covers to reduce the risk too just for while your in surgery that day.. But yep this isnt a good reason to cancel. Cold sore is unlikely to transfer and you're taking firm precautions to avoid too. It'll be less contagious once it's drying too :)

Catza · 05/03/2025 18:21

No, you don't know that your husband will forget. You just willingly made yourself a default parent. A few years down the line this will lead to him not doing bed times or school drop offs or refusing to take your child to clubs or not knowing what size shoes they wear. Stop this right now by allowing him to do parenting. Go and have your surgery. They will both be fine.

Also, they can just as easily transfer virus on the socks as they can with bare hands so the whole enterprise is irrational to begin with.

B1indEye · 05/03/2025 18:20

This is madness but reading some of the above posts suggests that you won't take any heed of everyone telling you you are being ridiculous but please don't waste precious NHS resources, there will be someone who isn't getting an op they need if you cancel. I hope it isn't any one I care about

NeedWineNow · 05/03/2025 18:09

I’m sorry, I’ve read some mad things on here but this takes the biscuit.

OP by your own admission you are having surgery that you had waited a number of years for. How long do you think you’ll have to wait if you decline it now for a cold sore? Let your husband look after your baby and have the surgery.

DaisyChain505 · 05/03/2025 18:08

You are being utterly ridiculous.

Not only would cancelling be an utter pisstake to the already over stretched NHS but it’s completely undermining your DH as a capable grown up and parent!

If you carry on undermining him and treating him like an incapable parent he’ll resent you and in the end, leave.

Babyboomtastic · 05/03/2025 18:08

iamnotalemon · 05/03/2025 17:57

It sounds like it's anxiety talking. It'll be ok. Have the surgery.

There is definitely HA behind this. Please have your surgery and seek support.

Newusername3kidss · 05/03/2025 18:03

First child?? Never heard anything so daft. Please don’t cancel your surgery. Are you nervous about it and trying to put it off (subconsciously)?

Babyboomtastic · 05/03/2025 18:03

This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read on here, and that's saying something!

I'm guessing you are super anxious about the surgery and looking for any excuse (even if bonkers) to put it off.

DarkMagicStars · 05/03/2025 18:01

Don’t be daft.

SpunkyKoala · 05/03/2025 18:00

Cancel how much can you need it if you’re prepared to miss your turn for a coldsore

iamnotalemon · 05/03/2025 17:57

It sounds like it's anxiety talking. It'll be ok. Have the surgery.

ApolloandDaphne · 05/03/2025 17:49

You would be mad to cancel surgery for something as minor as a cold sore on your child. You are not even sure it is a cold sore. I am baffled by your whole mindset here.
