Are you a nosy neighbour?

I'm not the interfering kind a la Norris from Corrie

I've got a ring doorbell and I do have a look at what people are doing 🙈

I'll even remark to myself, 'she's going out again, omg' or see what they've brought back from the shops

I love to look out of the window for no reason as well

No point to this thread really 😭😭, just inspired by my neighbour getting another deliveroo takeaway and me passing judgement and secretly wishing I was getting a takeaway 🙈🤭

You do realise the nosy neighbours are often the ones who call the police when something is happening, gets the council to unblock the drains, fix the lights and notice when someone's bins aren't taken in and checks they are OK?

My mother's nosy neighbour saved my mother's life once when she had fallen into the bath and couldn't get out. She saw that her curtains were still closed at lunchtime, went round and heard her calling for help. I hate to think what would have happened if she had decided it was none of her business.

😭😭 I'm sorry!!

The battery doorbells record motion nearby, the wired ones can constantly record

Ours (wired) doesn't record anything actually because we've never got round to subscribing to the service. It just acts as a giant peephole that we could speak to people through if we wanted to but we never have. If you subscribe, the battery ones record too. The actual doorbells are no different.

My neighbour msg me telling me her DH hadn’t left her in case I was wondering where he was. I hasn’t noticed at all but did leave me thinking it’s because she would have noticed. I’m not super nosey but I’m interested I suppose. I have a neighbour with 2 primary age kids and I do make a point of chatting to them as the kids are super cute. It’s a friendly road overall.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 10/04/2025 09:49

I’m the opposite of nosy, I have zero interest in what other people are doing!

I’m not unfriendly, I know my neighbours to say hello to and have a brief chat, and most of us on the street help each other out with small favours when needed - but I mind my own business and assume other people are doing the same.

Never even occurred to me that someone might be taking any interest in my dull comings and goings!

applemash · 10/04/2025 08:18

No, as long as they arent doing anything illegal or anti social I couldnt give a toss what they are doing. I find this quite odd to be honest, we used to have a neighbour who was always watching what people were doing and I found it quite sad- made me think they didnt have much else going on in their own life.

DiscoBeat · 10/04/2025 08:14

We don't have neighbours here as in houses next to ours but but there about 5 long gardens that back on to ours. We were very interested when one of them built an office at the end of their garden, with workmen on the roof, and we were commenting about them! Or we occasionally see someone up a tree doing some maintenance on it and judge their work!

shellyleppard · 10/04/2025 08:10

This is me..... I'm always commenting who has a new car 🤣🤣 but I keep an eye out for my elderly neighbour too

MinnieMountain · 10/04/2025 08:09

I’ve been nosy recently as a car with 2 people in it has been stopping on the road outside for a good 15 minutes in the early mornings. I’ve finally worked out that one person is giving the other a lift back from work and they can’t stop outside his home as he lives in a flat on the corner.

ChronicallyOnLime · 10/04/2025 08:08

I don’t think this thread will go down well OP 😂 I read a thread once were the poster was worried about a neighbours dog as they had never seen it leave the house; and all they got was extreme backlash for his ring doorbell being able to see the front of other people’s property’s 😂

daffodilandtulip · 10/04/2025 08:04

I wouldn't use my camera and I work in the back room, but my reading chair is in the front window so I will do a kind of daydream watch when I'm sitting there. I don't really think anything of it though, but I do find it interesting, the same way as I'd people watch sitting in Costa. Oh and they all have names that aren't their actual names 😂

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 10/04/2025 07:58

No idea what's happening with my neighbours but I do open the window a bit wider if there's a drunken row/loud conversation happening outside in the early hours; if you're going to wake me up you better be entertaining!! We didn't realise when we bought the house how many people wandered home from the pub past our front Grin

Hyperfish808 · 10/04/2025 07:11

Are nosy I meant to say.

Hyperfish808 · 10/04/2025 07:11

I’m not necessarily looking for stuff to be nosy about but if something happens I’ll have a look. Lad across the road was arrested recently so saw some of that from bedroom window. He’s been abusive to his GF so was pleased to see this.

my neighbour are n

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 05/03/2025 17:28

Oh 🥺 sorry to hear that

There's a difference between taking an interest in someone's late nights out and actually being nasty though, the latter is awful

I’d say it’s very seldom that someone who’s nosy about the small, innocuous goings on in others’ lives isn’t even more interested when they notice something out of the ordinary. It’s still not a good thing.

BarneyRonson · 05/03/2025 17:36

Ooh no, I’m not nosey in the slightest. I don’t claim it as a virtue, I just don’t have any interest in others habits in this way. I do look out of the window though, I love the trees and light changing, lamps coming on at dusk etc.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 05/03/2025 17:30

LennysRucksack · 05/03/2025 08:26

Hmm reading through the thread I've realised that my response focused rather on the fact that I'm SURROUNDED by nosy neighbours, not that I am one!

But still, it doesn't bother me in the least. I'd be affronted if any of the gossiping was cruel or malicious, but them all talking to each other about DHs latest garden project, or that we have so many different visitors and cars on the drive that we must be running an air B&B, is harmless.

I walk my dogs daily so I do "notice" things - John has changed his van, Penny was late this morning, that twat with the jack russell appears to live up North Road, Clive went to get bacon again etc - but all pretty benign.

This is it, benign nosiness, mild judging like you do when you watch the soaps or love island

I used to be a fun person 😭

Not intentionally nosy but i do stand in my front windows a lot making plans i probably won't keep for what to do with the garden, then getting grumpy about the garden (front garden, lots of gravel, pisses me off as it gets everywhere!) can see how it could look like i'm being nosy.
I have a camera in my kitchen window but it's only 'armed' (Blink's words, not mine) when i go to the office/holiday/days out

Omg i do the same with my garden. Years I've been here and the plans I've made have not come to fruition 😬

I grew up in a household that provided endless entertainment for the neighbours. My dad was an alcoholic and my parents were always arguing very loudly.
We used to be locked out of the house regularly because my parents were out when we got home from school. Apparently we were too young to have a key so we sat on the step sometimes in the freezing cold, often for hours.
Did any of the neighbours who used to watch us and gossip about it ever offer us any help or report it to anyone..no.
I often think people who are extremely nosy just for the thrill of it have something missing. A lack of empathy.
Same for people who get excited when they see an ambulance outside someone’s house.

You're the kind of neighbour who would drive me crackers, OP, but you have this unabashed charm about being nosy and loving gossip. I would keep all of my activities underground and out of sight but every now and again, I'd stage some kind of drama for you. Grin

😭😭😭 I fear I would fall hook line and sinker for the drama @LyingWitchInTheWardrobe and announce you one of my fave neighbours whilst gossiping

My day mostly consists of school runs and cooking chicken nuggets 🙈🤭, I live for being in someone else's business

I have a friend who always seems to know what other people are doing. She's got a lot more involved in other people's business since she retired. Too much time on her hands.

Chypre · 05/03/2025 12:40

I don’t really pay much attention and only check the camera footage if I get a notification (which only goes off if someone actually crosses the 'vision' perimeter past our gates). That said, I do like to stay somewhat aware of what’s going on around me, and I don’t think being a little curious makes someone 'nosy.' If I see a door left open and no contractor’s van around, I might slow down a bit just to see what’s up.

I notice obvious things like my neighbours having their garden landscaped, but don't really pay any attention to their day-to-day movements.
