To NOT want people to inform me I’ve dropped something?

chocolategift · 04/03/2025 16:37

I know - they’re being helpful.

But … today in the supermarket; toddler DD being whingey and difficult at the checkout. I dropped my phone out of my pocket as I was struggling with child, groceries and everything else. It’s right in front of me. But three people immediately shout over to me YOU’VE DROPPED YOUR PHONE. Meaning I felt obliged to pick it up immediately when actually I could have done with just leaving it for thirty seconds

I know I’ll get roasted for not being duly appreciative to my fellow citizens and I appreciate they mean to be helpful but seriously … I couldn’t have missed that I dropped it!

I know what you mean because I often travel on the tube and train into and my bag sometimes won't zip up fully sometimes if I have a lunchbox, water bottle, and umbrella along with my heavy laptop and people constantly stop me to say 'EXCUSE ME, YOUR BAG IS OPEN!'

Sometimes it can be like 4 or 5 times in the space of a ten minute journey.

I get they are trying to be helpful but people seem to think it's some sort of HUGE risk to have an open bag, when I already know full well that my keys, phone and purse are in my coat pocket, so unless they want a dirty lunchbox, thieves are not going to get anything. PLUS, I'm aware it's open so I'm aware of anyone who might be close to me/touching it.

It forces me to carry my rucksack in my hand as opposed to on my back because I'm fed up of being stopped all the time.

This exact thing also happens to me

I must have been told 30 times my bag is open

Yes I know!! It doesn't close. All my important stuff is in my pockets. It's so annoying

I honestly think people enjoy pointing out a fault because it makes them feel superior. It doesn't feel like they are being helpful

KittenPause · 04/03/2025 18:01

I feel I never want to help ungrateful people again

The other day I was driving out of the supermarket car park and a man, also coming out of the supermarket but with arms full of shopping (no bag), crossed the zebra crossing in front of me. He dropped a big sharing bag of crisps in the middle of the road.

I beeped my horn hoping he’d turn around and see his crisps. He didn’t.

So we drove along beside him and I put the window down and dd and I both tried to get his attention and shouted that he’d dropped his crisps. He gave me the finger and told me to f&@k off! 🤣 Jokes on him though. I hope he made it all the way home before he realised and had to eat a sad crisp-less lunch.

Babycote · 04/03/2025 17:59

I'm with you OP! This happens to me all the time. I'm juggling things, I drop something but it's not the most important priority to pick up that thing straight away. But then people around me seem to REALLY want me to pick it up, so I have to even though it makes doing the other stuff much harder.

Similar is when I am at restaurant and I put something like my phone under my chair. I actually had someone from another table gesturing at me madly to tell me my phone CHARGER was under my chair. I thought he wanted to use my charger! But no he just wanted to tell me my charger was on the floor under my chair. Which was where I had put it.

TheChosenTwo · 04/03/2025 17:58

Yabu of course but only because at the time you were stressed and wrangling children at the supermarket isn’t a fun time!

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 04/03/2025 17:56

Really!!!

Serpentstooth · 04/03/2025 17:50

People tried to help me. I didn't want them to, I prefer to suffer. AiBU?

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 04/03/2025 17:46

In the nicest possible way do u think you're just a bit stressed and over tired, I'm sure everything will feel better after a (hopefully) good night's sleep!!!
I know the stress of flapping and dropping stuff everywhere at the tills whilst wrangling a toddler and a baby. I normally give a manic running commentary, that with my dishevelled appearance means people probably are too scared to say something to me, apart from the other parents who Get It 😂

Snorlaxo · 04/03/2025 17:44

I did this today when the person in front of me dropped their AirPods case. It made a sound when it dropped but I told the person because I was trying to be helpful. Luckily the person said thanks which is what I would have said if I was the one who dropped it.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 04/03/2025 17:41

@chocolategift Genuine question but what kind of responses were you anticipating/hoping for?

Echobowels · 04/03/2025 17:37

chocolategift · 04/03/2025 17:10

What do people think I did? I’m a bit baffled with these responses; all I did was say thanks and pick it up. But it was literally in front of me, I couldn’t have missed it and unless someone’s the size of Ben Elf they aren’t going to steal it. But because I think to myself it’s a bit stressful and annoying being told something I already know I should stay home forevermore so people can avoid … umm, what? My thank you?

I can empathise, OP. Your attention was on several different things at once and having something obvious pointed out by no less than 3 people in quick succession, just adds to the overwhelm!

Of course they were trying to be kind - which is why you said thank you!

Your only mistake was posting in AIBU 😂

I know what you mean but you could have just said "I know thanks I'll get it in a sec"

Bubblemonkey · 04/03/2025 17:26

You’d complain if someone wiped it…

ADifferentSong · 04/03/2025 17:22

Wait until you lose one/have one stolen!

Redpeach · 04/03/2025 17:19

I agree op, people, bless em, think they're being helpful but they're just stating the bleedin obvious

llovemermaidgin · 04/03/2025 17:17

FFS Why does anyone bother to try to help anyone else when they might get a short shrift or in my case once a mouthful. I offered my seat on the bus to an older person with a walking stick and she tore me off a strip about how she wasn't disabled blah, blah. I just stared and thought fuck you.
The bus was full and a bit jolty, lot of potholes where I live, and the silly cow fell and hit the deck. I just ignored her. Someone helped her up, she was swearing and mouthing off because noone had offered her a seat. When the helper, who had been standing pointed out I had, she mouthed off at him too shouting and swearing.
Totally bat shit.

FavouriteFilms · 04/03/2025 17:16

There should have been you’re a bit of an idiot option on the voting options.
I kind of apologise for being so rude, but I was thankful when someone pointed out to me, my dropped phone, when I’d heard a thud, but not realised I’d dropped it.

TokyoSushi · 04/03/2025 17:15

I kind of get it OP, but you have to take the times it's not helpful graciously, because a couple of times it will be helpful!

Did you call the police?

No need for that, just log it with 111.

DazedDragon · 04/03/2025 17:10

@chocolategift obviously YABU.

A woman dropped her phone in a furniture store a couple of weeks ago and I'm sure she'd noticed. I was about 10 metres away. Then she walked off leaving it on the floor!

I picked it up and walked it over to her, and she was actually oblivious she had dropped it and so grateful I'd noticed and brought it to her!

BananaPalm · 04/03/2025 17:07

You're very narrow minded if you think that what's obvious to you is also obvious to others... 🤦🏻‍♀️ They can't read your mind so don't expect them to.

JohnTheRevelator · 04/03/2025 17:05

They are just trying to be helpful.

fivefestivefrogs · 04/03/2025 17:05

You should shop online, so that people can avoid you.
