AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

Ukraine war latest: US pauses military aid to Ukraine as EU chief says Europe is 'ready to step up'

Meanwhile, Russia says Donald Trump's move is "the best contribution to the cause of peace".

@Yalta do you think Ukraine will just keep fighting without US help? And no deal

Just thinking why would someone ask for help from someone on the side of the aggressor (say they are Bessie Mates with them) and who is only interested in “helping” themselves to what they have rather than helping

Do think Ukraine will keep fighting? The alternative for the world if Russia takes Ukraine means no one is safe. Russia will just keep marching into countries and taking them

DuncinToffee · 09/03/2025 19:24

NBC is reporting that Trump won't resume Ukraine military aid after signing minerals deal.

I guess we'll see what happens this week.

There's a meeting set up between US and Ukrainian officials

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 09/03/2025 16:57

Also, I have watched the video and interpret it as "we are ready to sign a minerals deal which includes security guarantees". Just my opinion of course and others may interpret it differently.

(Looks like my image on previous post is being reviewed - hopefully it will appear soon).

@EasternStandard but here are his statements on X - he is saying he is ready to sign it but I interpret it as saying only with security guarantees? I guess it could be read as "we'll sign the minerals deal and then push for security guarantees" but I do not believe that is what he truly means? As who would trust Trump to guarantee Ukraine's security AFTER a minerals deal is already signed?

@Theunamedcat it's his post.

But if you disbelieve his words due to the platform he's also saying he's ready to sign here in a clip.

www.theguardian.com/world/video/2025/mar/03/zelensky-says-he-is-ready-to-sign-minerals-deal-and-relations-with-us-will-continue-video

I wouldn't say it's definite, but things have moved on and he has said he is ready a few times.

EasternStandard · 09/03/2025 15:59

@Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr there have been updates if you look up the last few days.

Look at his X and will Zelenskyy sign and see what comes up.

It's not a definite, but by his own words he has said he will. This was Forbes March 1st after the White House meeting

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he is ready to sign a stalled minerals deal with the United States in a thread on X on Saturday

Who runs X? Not someone with a vested interest in him signing and an expert in media manipulation by any chance?

Do you mean he won't sign without this?

Well, I don't know him personally so cannot 100% vouch for his intentions but from what he has said previously, including since Trump and Vance verbally attacked him at the White House, I do not believe he will sign a minerals deal with security guarantees.

As @Blossomtoes says, why would he?

What compromises will the US be asking of Russia?

Probably to let America have the ores from the occupied East of Ukraine, at a discount price.

Everyone wants the war to end, wars are terrible business. Sadly, they usually end when one side has run out of resources. Nobody wants people to be killed, but Ukraine cannot afford to have a capitulation forced on them.

The only time I can think of with a big party stepping in is with the USA slapping Britain and France down, over Suez.

user9876543211 · 09/03/2025 15:34

The truth is that Russia has the power to end this war at any point. They could put a stop to it in the next 10 minutes, so maybe the onus should be on them?

DdraigGoch · 09/03/2025 14:57

aliceinawonderland · 08/03/2025 23:05

In my opinion one can support Zelenskyy and still want the war to end, which will inevitably involve compromises.
However the panorama programme seemed to suggest that Ukraine couldn’t win at this stage.

What compromises will the US be asking of Russia?

Notonthestairs · 09/03/2025 12:37

Zelensky travelled to Washington on the 28th to sign a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the mineral deposits and an investment fund. It wasn't a full detailed agreement - it explicitly left much to future negotiations.
But it did include reference to efforts to protect mutual investments - ie US would step in to protect mining.

Personally I see little credibility in that given the deposits are largely in Russian territory and the US had interests in Ukraine when Russis invaded so it didnt seem to put them off in the past.

Ukraine hasn't been offered a peace deal - so they definitely havent walked away from one.

Russia's position and demands haven't been reported as changing.
All that has happened is that Ukraine has been weakened by Trump.

Russia has broken ceasefires 17 times since 2014.

No one is allowed to have any opinion other than the war should continue

getting a bit fed up with this sort of statement from various posters

I have not seen one single poster on these threads that does not want peace and the war to end

not one

@Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

At no point did I say that Zelenskyy didn't have the support of his government

What I said was that senior Ukrainian officials had advised him to sign the minerals deal

I only read the BBC news articles or The Times so it must have come from one of those sources

But please don't put words into my mouth. Your bullying tactics are as bad as Trump's! No one is allowed to have any opinion other than the war should continue.

Anyone who thinks enough young lives have been sacrificed in a war of attrition seems to you to be a putin or a trump supporter.

Surely this is important enough to warrant discussion as opposed to being shut down!

@aliceinawonderland I'm not bullying you or trying to shut you down. I also think the war needs to stop but not by just appeasing Russia in the way Trump is suggesting (i.e. let Russia keep the land it has invaded). That is not a solution as it rewards Russia for its illegal invasion and emboldens Putin to go further.

You must be aware of all the disinformation on this thread and when you posted your comment about Zelenskyy, his government and the "peace deal", I was asking for your source. Since I asked, I see that you have changed your statement to "minerals deal" rather than "peace deal", which significantly changes the meaning. My understanding is that no overall peace deal (which guarantees Ukraine's future security) has been proposed, and so of course Zelenskyy has not agreed to one. But he has said he would agree to a minerals deal IF it is part of a peace deal backed by security guarantees.

I think we are broadly of the same opinion here and have just misunderstood each other somewhat 😊

I wonder if at this stage does Ukraine really want America’s “help” to protect Ukraine citizens given they are siding with the invaders

@Yalta do you think Ukraine will just keep fighting without US help? And no deal

PerkingFaintly · 09/03/2025 10:19

Yes Russia is in no way communist.

It's authoritarian, undemocratic and with almost 100% control of the information environment – but sadly this is a game which can be played by capitalists just as well as communists.

user9876543211 · 09/03/2025 10:03

SinnerBoy · 09/03/2025 09:52

Nothing in war is impossible. I mean who would have thought the USA would be supporting communism and directly opposing itself against the free western world.

I mostly agree with that, but Communism? Russia's a Wild West capitalist country.

I think it's more that the USA is supporting strongman authoritarian regimes with rigged elections without being particularly fussy as to the specifics of their political and economic philosophies and practices, with an extra star added for a kleptocracy.
