AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

We don't, no, but Trump is doing his best to ensure we get it.

What I saw was Trump & Co pursuing a negotiated solution. Both sides feeling like the got something and ending a costly war.
Looked like press conference was supposed to signal this.

Mr Z … didn’t want a negotiable and let that be known.

So, now it’s all about war - weapons spending, troops, death and in the end - boarders similar to whatever Trump negotiation would have yielded with added cost of a military boarder zone costing billions a year to defend.

thanks Zelensky….

The more I think about it - he is a little fool in heels, dancing EU & UK into a costly war.

I am sorry but I have never in my 50 pus years on this earth read so much crap and seen so many hysterical posts as on this thread. its bloody ridiculous.where on earth are you getting your bizarre ideas from?
President Trump is posturing and making a very valid point to the world,us included, cannot you see that?He is taking a stand and a valid one at that that America is not the saviour of the world especially financially. Why do you all expect that country to finance everything? America owes no country anything, and why should the President and citizens of America be subject to such disrespect? Aid has temporarily been suspended. This is to force the hand of the little man running round the world with his hands out in his action man clothes demanding every other country finance his every whim whilst billions of pounds has gone "missing". Nobody, not one single country,us,France, anyone can go into this with alleged peacekeepers or boots on the ground without America no one, you should remember that.No American backing No dice and no one can move and no peace. Whilst our Pm is rallying leaders of nations no one has the money.weapons or troops to move an inch without America. Trump is forcing the hand of Zalensky to negociate. As for being a russian plant well ffs grow up.This war will be stopped round a table not on the battlefield as zalensky would like glorified by dead soldiers on the ground. I would step back, calm down and have a chill about which scenario would play out the best for everyone.

Actually the Budapest Memorandum obligates the US (and others) to protect Ukraine, and that is why they willingly gave up their nuclear weapons.

It's not a case of running to mummy because of a bully in the playground as you seem to suggest.

It is a good that Europe/UK are stepping up.
Realising that Europe/UK Expect USA to handle security.

Don’t think it was a deliberate strategy, but do see that US is expected to step in, yet get criticized endlessly for stepping in

Makes me think of like how your kids expect you to pay for everything, even after you’ve supported them for 20+ years.

Mm. I see it more like the husband who claims all the money in the marriage is his, because he can see he gets paid a salary.

While his wife who enables him to do that by unpaid labour of the entire whole domestic load is completely invisible to him.

It's not just childcare that's are invisible to him; he can't see laundry, putting food on the table or any of the other myriad things he'll miss when she chucks him out, either. And when she brings in money from her own paid work, that's half his as well.

IhadaStripeyDeckchair · 04/03/2025 13:30

I don't know why anyone is surprised, Trump is Putins puppet.
As its just been said on the radio - Putin & Trump are as bad as each other.

Trump will never admit he's wrong - too much loss of face.
Time to turn our backs on the USA & let them self destruction.

The EU needs to step up &.support Ukraine otherwise Putin will invade another part of Europe, the another, then another.
This rings a bell - does anyone remember a dictator walking over Europe in the past?

I can understand why the invitation was issued as although I'm sure Starmer privately hates Trump, trying to maintain diplomacy to (a) encourage the US to act with integrity regarding Ukraine and (b) maintain UK and US relations for a future period when Trump's era is over, is important.

But I do wonder whether it should be rescinded now.

No, why start tensions with a major world power? Maybe that’s how you would deal with a child bully, but come on, you have to have some common sense here. Realistically, we need the US. We cannot defend ourselves, even if the whole of Europe stood together.

Do you honestly want a war/tensions with the US?

Inter-country relations are complicated and can be challenging to handle and maintain. You can’t just go all in with what’s morally right. You have to step back and look objectively and what the effects of an impulsive decision could be.

Taking back his invitation would be a very bad sign to the US. It won’t be taken well.

Who on earth would want this ?

Russia? It's currently their only plan for economic growth.

duc748 · 04/03/2025 13:29

I find it also interesting that the Unherd/Spiked axis view on this seems to be very much, yeah, we're cool with this, saw it coming, the EU is rubbish, dontcha know....

They don’t care, as it’s miles from them. Why would they.. .?

They have problems of their own, unrest, homelessness , no good medical care, vast swathes of their society locked up for being different

As Sarah Palin pointed out years ago, from Alaskaa you can actually see Russia.

If Europe cannot save us from Putin, the US will end up regretting their sucking up to and capitulating appeasement of Putin. Subjected to the hegemony of first Russia and subsequently China.... where would it leave them?

Iwantmyoldnameback · 04/03/2025 13:28

Well if Trump doesn't rein in Vance it settles the issue of the state visit, why would anyone want to visit a random King?

nuned · 04/03/2025 13:28

AnonymousBleep · 04/03/2025 13:27

duc748 · 04/03/2025 13:23

I'd say two things: firstly, Trump is a POS, and so is Vance. But secondly, the will in the West to continue to support Ukraine is/was waning fast, and not just in the US. The sad truth is that the West were always going to dump on Zelenskyy eventually, and even if the Democrats had won the US election, the tone might have been different, but the long-term results the same. We can complain abut how awful Putin is all we like, but I suspect British enthusiasm for our 'boots on the ground' (and the corpses that go with them) won't be much greater than American voters have shown.

Only Americans seem to be completely oblivious to the fact that people in the UK know that Putin is a threat to US. We'd rather the frontier for defending ourselves from him was a few thousand kilometres away in Ukraine than right on our doorstep.

RubyTuesday48 · 04/03/2025 13:27

Semiramide · 04/03/2025 12:59

All of this.

It is sad - and scary - to see that the vast majority of Americans don't seem to care. No mass demonstrations against Trump essentially proposing to capitulate to Putin and leave the frontline of the free world in deep shit.

That's because many Americans can't see beyond their own borders. When I lived there the big surprise was finding out how few own passports. We may think we see lots of American tourists here but in fact they don't all travel that much, even within their own country.

Vance is a bigger cunt than Trump. The UK only sent troops to Iraq and Afghanistan to help and support the USA after 9/11. That was the 'Coalition of the Willing'. Where was the gratitude from Trump and Vance for that?

And our reparations. We know Trump and Vance would have demanded payback if the boot was on the other foot.

It doesn't matter whether they are clean or corrupt really. A sovereign nation has been invaded, and a sovereign nation which is important in terms of resources it holds.

nuned · 04/03/2025 13:22

@FavouriteFilms my thoughts exactly - why would you want a full on war with Russia ?

We are completely fucked if that happens.

So much BS flying around about how Europe will defend itself now that Trump is pausing Zelensky's money.

It's western propaganda.

Russia hasn't been able to get out of The Ukraine for 3 years. How the hell is it going to take on the whole of western Europe if it suddenly defeated The Ukraine?

Long range missile, my a**e. He would have used them by now. Besides, the west have them too, we seem to spend on defence here in the UK.

I don't think anyone is saying it's Zelensky pocketing it all but Ukraine has had huge problems with corruption and although they are really moving forwards they are still way down the table.

'According to the most widely cited source—the annual ranking of corruption by Transparency International (TI)—Ukraine has scored poorly for decades. As late as 2016, amid major anti-corruption reforms, TI’s survey still judged Ukraine to be as corrupt as Russia. The most recent TI index suggests that Ukraine has made some strides since then, but it still ranks 104th among 180 countries. Denmark is ranked first—meaning that it is perceived as cleanest—while Russia ranks 141st.'

'Last year, Ukrainian authorities opened a criminal case against Dmytro Firtash, an oligarch also wanted in the United States for corruption, alleging that his group embezzled $484 million from the Ukrainian state treasury in a scheme involving gas transit fees.'

I'm not pro Trump by any means though, voting in a narcissistic megalomaniac is never a clever move in my book. That doesn't mean though that we should pretend Ukraine is squeaky clean.

foreignpolicy.com/2024/03/06/ukraine-corruption-reforms-russia-war/

Nobody has said they are squeaky clean, Z said that himself in the article that was linked!
Trump has repeatedly said they have given 360b but won't substantiate that figure! I have seen plenty of trump supporters say they have paid 350 , he's stolen money, massive house in florida, some shit about diamonds. On top of the dictator, they started the war crap.
How much more do you need?
What do you think of Russia?

Time for Europe to step up. It will take years, thousands of boots on the ground and billions of pounds/euros to conduct a land war with Russia.

Tigergirl80 · 04/03/2025 13:14

He’s an absolute tw*t I wouldn’t usually say this about someone but that person that attempted to assassinate him and that other man got killed instead. That should have been Trump and the way he was celebrating afterwards because they weren’t successful. No condolences to the man’s family that died him and his brainwashed minions that voted for him absolutely disgust me.
