AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

Why am I going bust? Your post makes no sense to me.

I think it is in reference to Mr musk acquiring his billions upon billions upon billions of american dollar contracts that he is acquiring while raiding the pennies from lesser mortal American citizens. ( Musky has the sweet ambition of wanting to be the first Trillionaire) Why should an American citizen get medicaid /medicare/ social security or a veteran have a job when a few well fed billionaires can travel in spacex to Mars.

Dont forget there is the added benefit of the mere mortals just falling off this mortal coil in the absence of affordable healthcare...it will save a FORTUNE.

Your American coffers are being raided and given to the south African.

And billed us for it.

FWIW I don't like the man either and it's worth remembering that it's mainly Russia at fault for invading in the first place, but as you rightly said the sponging hasn't helped and neither has the way some "leaders" convinced themselves it would continue for ever

///

Seriously - how the fuck do some of you see this ending? After an aggressive invasion which if nothing else has so far kept Russia from the door of other nations, do you seeZelensky bending over to the demands of Putin and Trump who will quickly take everything they can get without giving two fucks about the people of Ukraine, do you think Putin will stop? Really?

Because he fucking won't.

We either continue to chip in to Ukraine or we make some tough decisions and Europe come together and tell America to fuck off.

Because if we acquiesce to these maniacs we're all screwed

There must be other floating voters though who were taken in by his bullshit and are regretting their choice now that reality is starting to set in. There must be! Surely! Please tell me they don't all support this arsewipe unquestioningly!!! ☹️

There certainly are. Even some of his base are starting to say "hang on, we didn't ask for this"

Do you have a reasoned argument.... or do you only throw childish insults?

Sadly debate is a long lost skill in this country. Please grow up.

Sadly there is a complete absence of reasoned argument on this thread from Trump/Putin apologists. If you actually read the post that I was referring to you might also see the ignorance contained in it.
Trump supporters seem to believe that the US are the saviours of the world and generously throw their money at us out of the goodness of their hearts, whilst failing to realise the actual reasons for the proliferation of US military bases throughout Europe.

Wow - the hysterical one is you.

First up Europe has spent as much as the US on aid to Ukraine. In the region of $100bn each.

Second Trump insists on stating the US has spent $350bn. BBC fact checking and others have requested a source for this figure but had no response. I suspect it’s the same source as Boris’ brexit £350m per week for Brussels claim.

Third no one is asking the US to unilaterally fund anything.

Fourth, Europe and especially the UK backed the US in Iraq and Afghanistan so yes you owe us. It’s a two way street.

@itsjustbiology
The US signed the Budapest Memorandum !

Its a historical fact and agreement….

vivainsomnia · 04/03/2025 15:05

After the amount of hatred levelled at Trump over the last months I'm not surprised he has decided not to play the game any more
If Trump and co. really wants respect, he needs to start acting an adult with an ounce of emotional intelligence. Acting like the school bully with their accolade has lost its power. Nowadays, these bullies are being challenged and gain no credibility at all.

Witnessing such emotionally immature intelligence from a world leader is utterly baffling.

We will never know what outcome diplomacy would have yielded. Mr Z bailed out before any real options presented. We just don’t know what could have been.

As the man said…. Mr Z didn’t have the cards last week, he has less cards now.

He didn't bail. He was attacked verbally and then thrown out the White House.

I am sorry but I have never in my 50 pus years on this earth read so much crap and seen so many hysterical posts as on this thread. its bloody ridiculous.where on earth are you getting your bizarre ideas from?
President Trump is posturing and making a very valid point to the world,us included, cannot you see that?He is taking a stand and a valid one at that that America is not the saviour of the world especially financially. Why do you all expect that country to finance everything? America owes no country anything, and why should the President and citizens of America be subject to such disrespect? Aid has temporarily been suspended. This is to force the hand of the little man running round the world with his hands out in his action man clothes demanding every other country finance his every whim whilst billions of pounds has gone "missing". Nobody, not one single country,us,France, anyone can go into this with alleged peacekeepers or boots on the ground without America no one, you should remember that.No American backing No dice and no one can move and no peace. Whilst our Pm is rallying leaders of nations no one has the money.weapons or troops to move an inch without America. Trump is forcing the hand of Zalensky to negociate. As for being a russian plant well ffs grow up.This war will be stopped round a table not on the battlefield as zalensky would like glorified by dead soldiers on the ground. I would step back, calm down and have a chill about which scenario would play out the best for everyone.

This is like a surreal nightmare.

An ignorant, semi-literate, cognitively impaired vindictive convicted felon, rapist and grifter is being manipulated by henchmen to disrupt the entire world order. Ironically, greatly to the detriment of the United States citizens, but also to other innocent parties. Abandoning Ukraine is nothing short of intentional evil.

It's apparent the US congress and courts won't do anything. Can international courts/ the Hague / any other body hold trump to account? Anything going to detrail this apocolyptic train??

This post deserves copying

"And the spin-off benefit for the people of Ukraine is that Putin stops mercilessly killing and terrifying them 24/7."

If that were the case then they wouldn't care what peacekeeping force was in Ukraine.

Ukraine government has approved the minerals deal and was ready to sign it - their comments are in black and white in The Times today.

I dont think Russia wanted to sign the minerals agreement - and Trump was caught on the hop and needed to blame somebody for his deal failing.

You're not surprised that the man America elected as their president is prepared to wreck America financially and support the invasion of sovereign countries and the slaughter of civilians because "some people have been nasty to him"? You don't have a very high opinion of Trump yourself, clearly.

valentinka31 · 04/03/2025 14:58

The US and Russia have the same motivation and objectives. Increasing their vast wealth. This whole war was about Putin getting the areas of Ukraine richest in priceless minerals. So it makes sense that a 'deal' involves the two 'parents' divvying up the spoils. And the spin-off benefit for the people of Ukraine is that Putin stops mercilessly killing and terrifying them 24/7.

This is a dirty deal. Trump and Putin are very dirty. Zelensky is not. He is a man of extreme principle and, ultimately, love for his country, his people, and others, which is evidenced in all of his behaviour.

This is genuinely a fight between good and evil.

So, Trump removing aid will delight Russia. This gets Russia even more likely to be receptive to a deal seemingly forged between the two of them, disgracing and bypassing Zelensky, Putin additiionally cock-a-hoop that killing innocents has got him what he wants.

But

Europe is not full of kids. There are genuine stateswomen and men, plus our own Starmer, who are the real grown ups. They are trying to rally and step up. Let's see.

However, it is true, unfortunately, that in terms of resolution for Ukraine, Zelensky would be better off cowtowing to Trump, heaping praise on him in his 'peace'-brokering role, and getting down to the detail of it. He would be better off with a safe Ukraine, protected by an international buffer zone and army, with a massive injection of rebuilding capital, in a deal with the US where effectively he is paying them for protection.

YES it is a racket.
YES it is scandalous.

But at the moment, Ukraine is held to ransom. It is like a situation of extreme domestic abuse. Sometimes you have to do a deal with the devil, sell your soul and whatever else you can, give up all you would never have dreamed of relinquishing, just to gain the one thing most precious, without which you will have no life:

Freedom.

Zelensky needs to deal for freedom, and pay whatever the price. His job is not to walk off. It is to get the best deal he can. Or rather, the least costly to Ukraine. But yes, it will hurt. That he is even having to do a deal is beyond disgraceful.

But this, unfortunately, is our planet. Ruled by money and force.

So in order to survive, Zelensky needs to deliver that deal.

...

The USA is $36trillion in debt. A nation of 300million has been funding European defence (600million people) for too long. Time the European's paid for their own defence and fund Ukraine too.
I don't see why the USA has to pay for everything; they are going bust. Will the EU step up and fund Ukraine's defence in place of the USA or will they simply bitch at the USA (like this thread is)?
Time for European's to step up.

Try a little fact finding. You can't seriously believe the USA is the only contributer to global defence.

The fundamental reason that there is a combined effort to maintain world peace is to ensure there is shared intelligence and defence if required should a dictator like Putin/KimJung Un/ Xi Jingpin attack militarily or engage in nuclear warfare.

Eg 9/11 is a case in point ...Europe stepped up when it was America that were the primary target. This is still a recent memory for most but it seems to have been conveniently forgotten, as in the case of the vice president Vance. Despite his Yale education, and apparently serving in the Marine Corps.

There will be no “US security”. Trump’s made that crystal clear, we all woke up to it this morning. There are some very stark choices to be made now.

Trump is actively dismantling US security now.

Europe isn't doing anything. Warm words aren't what's required here. It's military power and we don't have any because we've been sponging off the US for decades. If our electorates had prioritised defence spending over welfare, things might be different, but we didn't, so can't really be moaning that US taxpayers don't want to foot the bill any more.

Very well said, Ablondiebutagoodie
Certainly it's devastating for Ukraine, whose ordinary citizens don't deserve this, but while the almost competitive hating on Trump's doubtless very enjoyable for some, the cries of Europe having to take up the cudgels are getting a bit silly considering they don't have the wherewithal to do it without US backing

FWIW I don't like the man either and it's worth remembering that it's mainly Russia at fault for invading in the first place, but as you rightly said the sponging hasn't helped and neither has the way some "leaders" convinced themselves it would continue for ever

Cost of travel to Greece from Kansas City vs Easyjet from Luton.

Sure many from Kansas would go to Greece if the flight wasn’t 12 hrs and £2,000

Maybe if they were better travelled they would be less likely to believe the BS Trump dished out.

or maybe the racism and misogyny would still have been irresistible
