AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

It’s not surprising. After Zelenskyy directly threatened the US twice during the meeting, which immediately turned the tone and got him shut down by Trump and Vance, I was expecting this.

Zelenskyy’s threats seem to have made a lot of Americans change their minds about supporting him as well.

Did he fuck.

Did you watch the whole thing?

Though predictable, it's disappointing to see the tired old trope about the US not helping until after Pearl Harbor being trotted out - especially as it's completely wrong: https://history.state.gov/milestones/1937-1945/lend-lease

As for "us helping them after 9/11", in terms of Afghanistan this is true
However it's the EU who folk have been insisting should arrange to stand along without the US, and I've already posted their joint response after 9/11 ... it added up to a whole pile of new bureaucracy and little else

And we spent years paying back $$$ millions to the USA.

No, because all Americans share a common language whereas we don't in Europe. Being on the West Coast (e.g. LA) was an entirely different experience than living in Manhattan.

But still not as culturally vast as the examples I gave.

Houston to New York was very.

Not nearly as different as Birmingham to Paris even accounting for the language differences.

We are part of Five Eyes (UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand) - the US saying intelligence from them is a privilege is pretty thick.
Infuriated by Trump calling the PM of Canada the governor, too. Perhaps it's time to burn the rebel's Capitol again?
This is the price we are all paying for the Democrats not removing Biden from the running earlier and also for not ditching the stupidity of gender ideology.

Yes the Democrats should have been firmer on pushing back gender ideology. It's a common sense issue.

Once a lot of the effects of the trans propaganda started to be reported here, most people were rightly outraged and still are. Look at the case in Scotland. It shows how mad things had got.

They didn't tackle it and it was an easy goal for the Trump administration.

Trump and Putin intend to bring NATO down. While there is wider war in Europe he will ensure democracy is overthrown in America. At least now we understand why Putin kept throwing money and lives at what looked like a hopeless cause, he had an ace card, a traitor up his sleeve.

People pick a politician like a football team. They nail their colours to a flag no matter what. Trump supporters will continue supporting him because they simply cannot admit they've been fooled.

I know a covid conspiracist, he was insistent it didn't exist. He caught it and was so ill that he had to move home to be cared for. His elderly parents caught it and despite being vaccinated his mum ended up in hospital. He now says it does exist but it was manufactured so our government could track us by the vaccines. He simply cannot admit that he was scared and wrong.

What can we do here to make us feel less powerless as the world goes to shit, well I guess we can donate to Ukraine financially if we can.

Boycott American goods where we can.

Ensure Farage doesn't get a sniff of power. I'm hoping the disgust towards Trump will harden feeling towards him.

Our leaders will have start the difficult and costly process of disentangling us from America. A bigger military, less social media US influence. Etc etc the list is massive.

We need to rejoin the EU.

David Cameron tried to put an old issue to bed. He didn't forsee how much effort Russia would put into influencing the vote. It is yet another victory for Putin and one we need to reverse.

I am sorry but I have never in my 50 pus years on this earth read so much crap and seen so many hysterical posts as on this thread. its bloody ridiculous.where on earth are you getting your bizarre ideas from?
President Trump is posturing and making a very valid point to the world,us included, cannot you see that?He is taking a stand and a valid one at that that America is not the saviour of the world especially financially. Why do you all expect that country to finance everything? America owes no country anything, and why should the President and citizens of America be subject to such disrespect? Aid has temporarily been suspended. This is to force the hand of the little man running round the world with his hands out in his action man clothes demanding every other country finance his every whim whilst billions of pounds has gone "missing". Nobody, not one single country,us,France, anyone can go into this with alleged peacekeepers or boots on the ground without America no one, you should remember that.No American backing No dice and no one can move and no peace. Whilst our Pm is rallying leaders of nations no one has the money.weapons or troops to move an inch without America. Trump is forcing the hand of Zalensky to negociate. As for being a russian plant well ffs grow up.This war will be stopped round a table not on the battlefield as zalensky would like glorified by dead soldiers on the ground. I would step back, calm down and have a chill about which scenario would play out the best for everyone.

What a disgusting post

The "little man" has had his country invaded.

Did you feel clever typing that all out?

I really can't fathom what Trump's end game is. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a loooong paper trail linking him to corrupt Russian funds over the decades. But it must be more than that surely? Would Trump even care? Or sex tapes, but I don't think he'd care about that either. He'd just get Musk to 'prove' it was AI.

I think he just really admires Putin. This is the kind of leader he aspired to be himself. You can see how he's styled his cabinet - everyone pandering to his capricious temperament, clapping along like seals, no dissent within, etc. The fact is, Putin wouldn't hesitate to murder any of them, if the fancy took him.

The thing is though, surely Trump has enough money already? Why would he be willing to stoop so low just to add a zero on his already millions that he has?

Insatiable greed for money, power and admiration.

Also, he's nowhere near as rich as Musk. And Musk still wants more.

Megalomania. More money = more power

Australia has its own challenges and push/pull factors influencing travel. As commonwealth, there are work opportunities abroad and I’m guessing you are saying they travel because …. What’s your point? They are global thinkers? Seeking cultural experiences? Bored to death ?

Are they sending troops to Ukraine?

Work opportunities overseas still require visas and passports.

I am talking about travel and the excuse that diverse landscapes within a country removes the desire for foreign travel.

I don’t know what sending troops to Ukraine has to do with the context of my post and the specific topic I was discussing.

NotTerfNorCis · 04/03/2025 16:38

There are the sanctions, too. Trudeau just said he 'wouldn't back down from a fight'. Trump really is making an unbelievable mess of things.

If you can watch Fox News, the sycophancy is off the scale, even by their standards. It's like a political version of Stepford - and it's not just the Botox, they are all talking as if possessed - 'our president' etc. Strange, glazed expressions. One woman presenter was even raving that surely Trump will get the Nobel Peace Prize. It's like a parallel universe.

I agree with all of this.

My question is, to what end? Many suggest Trump wants to move Russia away from China, as China is his big adversary. But why would Russia do that? Even if Russia became an economic ally and partner to the US why would Putin drop China?

It doesn't seem to make sense. It must be more simple - simply that Trump wants to make money for himself only through taking Ukraine and its minerals and has engineered Putin as a partner to enable this and they share the proceeds, and he hasn't properly thought through the consequences of emboldening Russia / doesn't give a shit if Moldova, Lithuania, Finland get invaded next or if London gets nuked - in fact that suits him as the EU is a rival trading block. He also hasn't appreciated fully the likelihood that China then invades Taiwan, the producer of 80% of the world's chips, and the impact on the US economy.

Can he really not have thought that far ahead?

I'm in a left-wing political group on Facebook. Just recently, it's gone crazy with pro-Russian propaganda.

The pro-Russian side has various arguments, but one thing stands out - they blame America. Everything that's happened is because of US manipulation. America engineered a coup against Yanukovych, encouraged Ukraine and other countries to join NATO etc. I suspect there's an element of truth to this, although it's only part of the story. America will have been trying to influence Russia's neighbours. That makes it even more bizarre how Trump is positioning America as the unappreciated saviours, and Ukraine as the villains.

It also makes me wonder how Russia really feels about Trump's poodle behaviour. Trump won't criticise Putin, he's all for giving him what he wants. He shamelessly set up a weaker country struggling bravely for its survival, so he can claim mineral wealth and pretend to be a peacemaker. How does that play with Russia's obvious feelings of enmity and resentment towards America?

Yipes. Leave the group.

After the amount of hatred levelled at Trump over the last months I'm not surprised he has decided not to play the game any more.

This is actually a fair point. He's probably thinking 'fuck you all'.

I genuinely think he's a Russian asset, I think it's worrying that we share so much intelligence with the U.S. We are on the brink of the possibility of a very different world in future, militarily, financially and morally. I just hope Europe pulls together and stays strong.

It's time for the wool to fall from the world's eyes. The Trump administration have, so far, been gaslighting the world that their priority is peace (really!); they just want to enable negotiations; they are neutral arbiters, etc, etc, etc.

No more bullshit. Europe and Canada has understandably been in a state of disbelief, but we can't pretend anymore. How much more evidence do we need -

  1. US administration have never once acknowledged that Russia started the war by invading a sovereign territory.

  2. They publicly called Zelenskyy a dictator.

  3. No criticism of Putin - WTF!

  4. They went over the head of Ukraine and European allies in that first meeting between US and Russia in Saudi. We should have seen it for what it was then.

  5. Repeatedly inflating (more than doubling) the amount of aid they claim US has given Ukraine - despite all evidence to the contrary.

  6. The Oval office debacle.

  7. Voting last week with Russia, N. Korea, Belarus etc - not even abstaining.

  8. Trump's statement that "the EU was only formed to destroy America."

  9. Trump's cynical treatment of war-ravaged Ukraine as a minerals extortion opportunity

  10. Now the 'pause' on aid to Ukraine

  11. Clear adoption of Russia war rhetoric and language throughout the so-called 'diplomacy.'

  12. No mention of a single concession Russia will be expected to make in this 'peace deal' - while the assumption that Ukraine will be unable to reclaim its former territory is apparently baked-in to 'negotiations' at the outset.

  13. Gaslighting about the minerals grab being the equivalent of a security guarantee.

  14. Musk posting on X that it's time for US to leave NATO and UN.

  15. Vance's speech in Munich that the 'real threat' to Europe is not actually Russia (!!!) - oh no, it's the 'threat from within.' Said shamelessly, in front of Ukrainian generals at the conference, while their men and families are being killed - now.

  16. Vance's decision to only meet with the AFD after the Munich conference, not the actual Chancellor or any other party.

  17. Musk beamed onto the big screen with a rousing speech to rally the AFD Nazis in the days leading up to the German election.

HOW MUCH MORE EVIDENCE DO WE NEED?

This Trump administration is not 'determined to bring peace.' They are Russian puppets spouting Kremlin rhetoric. With Nazi-sympathisers and Christian anti-abortion zealots sprinkled among them.

The appearance of sycophancy and 'toeing the line' that now characterises US cabinet meetings or press conference rhetoric resembles something from.... The Kremlin or North Korea. It's all too weird.

They talk about 'free speech.' They mean they want the freedom to pedal hate speech - a weird hash of Kremlin / Nazi / anti-Islamic rhetoric; with some anti-abortion, ominous 'Christian' weirdness thrown into the mix.

This administration is the worst of humanity. Make no mistake. I hope America wakes up before it's too late.

Just go to the Fox news website for your answer. Trumpers either don't consume news or they believe this propagandist bollocks.
