AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

It's appalling. I really hope that Starmer doesn't keep trying to buddy up to him and I would like to see the ridiculous state visit invitation rescinded. It should never have been issued.

It’s bile-inducing to watch the leader of your country being overly civil to any dickhead but that’s politics. Charles no doubt wasn’t keen to ‘invite’ him over but you have to look at the bigger picture don’t you. World leaders have worked out the best way to negotiate with Trump is to flatter his ego, pay homage and basically treat him like an ancient king. It makes them look like clueless, simpering sycophants to outsiders but if this is the way to keep the leader of such a powerful country on side of course they’ll do it. There’s too much to lose by deliberately offending them.

Thats not to say they should appease unreasonably by standing by while they invade another country or threaten their own, but in terms of Trump, unless he really steps out of line (I know!) I think the unofficial line is to try to keep him sweet by whatever reasonable means necessary. It’s not worth the risk of him throwing his toys out the pram and officially declaring Putin America’s new closest ally is it. Although that seems to be on the fucking cards…

To me these voters are like our 'thick as shit' ones who voted for Brexit.

Sorry but it is called democracy.

Well, quite! But we can hope for the best.

Trump is Putin's puppet...at present.

But he's 78 and it's obvious he's a sociopath with mental decline. Really hope next POTUS is better.

We are part of Five Eyes (UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand) - the US saying intelligence from them is a privilege is pretty thick.
Infuriated by Trump calling the PM of Canada the governor, too. Perhaps it's time to burn the rebel's Capitol again?
This is the price we are all paying for the Democrats not removing Biden from the running earlier and also for not ditching the stupidity of gender ideology.

The US only gives 5 Eyes a small portion of the intelligence we collect. In fact "noforn," which means "not releasable to any foreign nationals" is the most common US intelligence designation.

Ah, horror. That’s an emotion we use when we’ve been caught off guard. But in the realm of power, there are no accidents just calculated moves. So, you're "horrified" by Trump's decision to cut military aid to Ukraine? Understandable, but allow me to offer a little perspective: this was inevitable. It was always about securing the right position for power, not about some lofty moral high ground.

Let’s call a spade a spade: Trump is a pragmatist, and he’s playing the long game, even if you don’t like the rules. If you think for one second that Ukraine’s situation is about good versus evil, then you’re missing the larger point.

The US cutting aid? It’s part of a strategic calculation, nothing more. The world of politics is cold, and when you understand that, you start to see the game for what it truly is.

Swapping sides? Hardly. It's about leverage. Trump has always had a knack for making bold moves, throwing the world into chaos to test who will bend, and who will break. By turning away from Ukraine, he’s playing on the world’s weaknesses. He knows exactly how to push buttons, how to make every side scramble for control. Russia is an old rival, sure but the game is never about taking sides. It’s about ensuring the right side wins for you.

As for Ukraine being the "victim," well, let’s not be naive. This isn’t a simplistic narrative of good and bad. Zelensky knew, from the moment this war began, that it was a chess game and in chess, the pieces don’t all move in one direction. If the US cuts aid, Ukraine will adjust its strategy. It always does.
So, horrified? Maybe. But the truth is, you’re witnessing the next phase of a global power struggle, and Trump’s move is just the opening gambit.

Remember, the game is always more complex than it first appears. And when the dust settles, it will be clear that the real winners are those who know how to maneuver when everyone else is scrambling.

He doesn't have a choice, Trump has backed him into a corner. I like Zelensky, and feel he is doing his absolute best for Ukraine. Trump & Putin on the other hand are bullying dictators. And I cannot say what I think of Musk, and that other cretin who was disrespectful to the UK; (I forget his name) on here.
Honestly I agree with a poster further up who said it wouldn't surprise her to hear of an assignation. Wasn't there a near miss with his ear or something a while ago, and some thought that it may have been a publicity stunt?

My theory is that the bullet went in one ear and in the absence.of any resistance flew straight out the other clipping his lobe.😁

I wouldn't get too excited three years ago Putin was about to pop his clogs according to the media. Unfortunately that didn't happen.

Have you seen Putin's potential successors? 😬 The phrase 'better the devil you know' comes to mind.

Unless I've misunderstood, this is the same minerals agreement that Zelensky had already agreed to – and had turned up to sign when the big babies had their Oval Office tantrum.

Zelensky repeated when in the UK that he was prepared to sign this deal.

He has now flattered Trump, and Trump has come back to the table with IIUC the same deal.

Zelensky wanted security guarantees as well, but they weren't in the orginal agreement (I've read it) and presumably aren't in the current agreement (I haven't read it).

So WRT the mineral deal, everybody's where they were before the tantrum.

However Trump has stopped military aid to Ukraine even when it had already reached Poland; and he and Vance have flushed 200+ years of US prestige down the toilet. So it's been a big lose all round. Well, except for Putin.

There's the small matter of the USA breaking the deal it made with Ukraine in promising its security in return for handing over its nuclear arsenal in 1994. But Trump isn't a man of his word, or anyone's word for that matter, is he?

I've tried to find evidence of this but I can only see that the nukes were destroyed, not given to the US (although the agreement still stands).

He's a businessman who throws his dummy out the pram when don't get what he wants. Real politicians and presidents/government uses diplomacy. Trump is only in power for 4 years it's pointless fracturing the relationship we have with America it's all about future relationships. The American education system must have gone bust if all they can produce is Trump. Is there no one better? 😂

Update: Zelensky thought the same as me and is now recinding and has made a minerals deal with Trump.

Bless him, the only sensible option. :(

Not a fan of the BBC (British Bullshi**ing Company), but even they have just run with a headline - Zelensky Willing To Work Under Trump's Strong Leadership.

Well done Zelensky. He knows a strong leader when he sees one!
