How to get phone without dh

PandoraBox2 · 03/03/2025 06:02

Dh is being very difficult. My sky phone contract is under his name as sky contract is under his name, I pay for my mobile and the credit report etc. Is under my name. He had to speak to them regarding my upgrade a d ordered a new one. Problem is he still hasn't cha ged his address after 10 years of marriage and it got delivered to his parents home who are not living in UK currently but still own the house. It went to dpd depot and then got returned. I pleaded with him to contact sky as they won't talk to me and he ordered a new one. Again its going to his parents home due to be delivered today. I'm working and parents address is no where near us. I've asked him for tracking I'd but he keeps swearing at me. I'm so lost on what to do. Totally lost without my phone. I'm probably misding kids related communication from school etc. I'm so upset. Can someone help me think clearly on what to do. Money is tight so don't want to buy a new phone when I have one ready to come to me

Let the phone be delivered to his parents house and get it returned again like before.
Go into town, get the phone you want on a contract with another provider. Or, if it’s an iPhone you can buy the phone directly with Apple - in your own name - and then take out a sim only deal.
It sounds like you don’t have the old phone working so won’t be keeping the number. But if you do, you just need a PAC code from sky which you can get by texting a number on a device with your old SIM card in.

Without knowing what other ways your DH is controlling, it’s hard to say how you should further approach this with him. But this isn’t a situation which arises in a healthy and loving marriage.

WHY do people not read the OP’s thread . MONEY IS TIGHT!

Would be great if everyone could just go out and buy a new phone or even a £38pcm contract for a new handset!

Depressing.
Good advice from PPs.
Get rid of this fucking ball and chain.
Good luck.

LIZS · 03/03/2025 09:21

And a phone store may be able to transfer data.

AlwaysThereBear · 03/03/2025 09:17

Sorry, only just seen your update about your phone not working, looks like you'll have to then buy a cheap phone and a sim only deal to tide you over.

Greyrockin · 03/03/2025 09:16

If you manage to get another phone somewhere OP you can get a cheap sim only deal. I’ve just moved from Sky mobile to Lebara via a deal I saw on MSE - https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cheap-mobile-finder/sim-only/ - they don’t do a credit check and have good reviews.

if you can access the Sky mobile account via the MySky app you should be able to request a PAC code to keep your number, or just have a cheap spare phone on the side with a new number and share that with people, and cancel the DD until H sorts everything out for you?

TheQuickCat · 03/03/2025 09:15

Hi PandoraBox2

This was me a few years ago. If you must wait for the new hand set, then wait. Once you have it you can go into any mobile provider shop an ask if they do a PAYGo SIM that allows you to keep your number.

If this is not possible, you'll have to buy a cheap hand set. You can still ask about keeping your number but it might not be possible so make a list of everyone/thing that will need the new one.

You need to talk to someone like Woman's Aid too. The way your husband is acting and the way you are living is not normal. You absolutely can change this. Start small, start this week. Flowers

ParrotParty · 03/03/2025 09:15

Some tesco shops have £10-£20 non smart phone handsets as an alternative temporary way to get a text/phone call one too. Not sure what the cheapest one with apps would be.

LIZS · 03/03/2025 09:15

You should be able to connect old phone via wifi .

My old phone stopped working completely. I was just data only plan as I didn't upgrade till I needed new phone.

Is it repairable?

If this was from your previous upgrade then I can't be that old.

I would look to see what is wrong with it, and have it fixed if possible.

ParrotParty · 03/03/2025 09:13

Do you have the keys for the parents house? If so take his ID, drive up and hopefully it's got a slip through the door saying it's delivered to a neighbour or held at the post office depending on the delivery service. There's not much else I can think of sorry unless you can contact the delivery company and ask them to leave it out of sight in a recycling bin or by the back door.
I hope you aren't stuck with husband too much longer ❤️

alwaysdeleteyourcookies · 03/03/2025 09:10

Buy a phone in a shop. Then call a lawyer to find out your options because what the actual fuck.

AlwaysThereBear · 03/03/2025 09:09

Is your current mobile phone working? Can't you get a cheap sim only contract and use the sim with your existing phone?and cancel the sky phone contract . You should be able to keep your existing number too. Looks like it'd be best if you can keep your phone contract independent of your dh! Sorry you are in this position, it looks like there is a reason he doesn't want to change his address with SKY, and it feels a bit dodgy, even though I can't fathom what it is he is up to! do his parents know that he is using their address for his sky contract?

Naunet · 03/03/2025 09:04

This doesn't make sense! How can the phone be in his name, but against your credit? Why do Sky have an old address on your account when they're providing services to your current address? Why can't your husband just add your name to the account?

Is he abusive and potentially lying to you?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 03/03/2025 08:43

Unfortunately, since it seems it is important to him that you don't have a phone you may need to buy the cheapest second hand unlocked phone you can and put your sim in that at least temporarily.

Ollybob · 03/03/2025 08:37

You can get a phone easily, cex would be your best bet as you'll get a decent phone for your money (although android would be much cheaper)
However for the communication surely you can use whatever device you are using Mumsnet on? WhatsApp works on a computer as well as mobile for a start.

LastHeraldMage · 03/03/2025 08:36

PandoraBox2 · 03/03/2025 06:11

I knew I would get comments like this! Yes I'm aware but what do i do in regards fir my phone a d being able to communicate with people?

You need to cancel whatever is in your name and get your own contract.

That's you immediate problem sorted. Then you need to work out what to do with H

Slobberchops1 · 03/03/2025 08:33

Cancel the sky phone direct debit - your husband can sort the payment out and order a new one- giff gaff are quite good

Autumn1990 · 03/03/2025 08:33

If you need a phone urgently you can ask friends if anyone has an old one you can have and go to a convenience shop that sells data only sims. It’s usually a rolling monthly contract and you can set it up in as little as 10 mins

Or buy a second hand phone and get a data only sim

Or go into a phone shop and sign up for a deal

It is a longer process transferring the phone number if you’re not the bill payer

Ive recently set up a second phone. Took about 30mins (because my mother hadn’t wiped it) and I used a data only sim bought online arrived 2 days after I purchased it

Hankunamatata · 03/03/2025 08:33

Do you have the money to buy a new smart phone? You can get a cheap one from likes of argos or currys to carry you over

rainbowstardrops · 03/03/2025 08:31

Why on earth did the idiot get the second phone sent to his parent's house again? Is he usually controlling?
If you can, go and buy a cheap phone for now, or ask friends if anyone has a spare.

SalfordQuays · 03/03/2025 08:28

Take his phone, and tell him you won’t return it till he redirects your new one. But really this is no way to live OP. Letting someone have so much control over you, when they are clearly nasty, is going to make you more and more unhappy as the years go by.

SofaSpuds · 03/03/2025 08:20

It is usually pretty easy to change delivery address for DPD. So get DH to do that first thing.....
Then consider your options re staying with someone who treats you like this.

PandoraBox2 · 03/03/2025 06:11

You but another contract elsewhere. Your DH is ridiculous!

isthismylifenow · 03/03/2025 08:10

He is doing this as he is abusive as most likely gets some sick kick from seeing you in distress. And he has a hold over you with the phone contract.

You are going to have to take control of this situation OP. Go and buy a cheapo and a payg and let the important people know your new number. I know you don't want to spend extra, but do you actually have this new phone on its way to you? It doesn't sound like it is if its going to be sent back again.

Stop paying that contract. It it is in his name, then he will have to face the consequences of that.

TeaAndStrumpets · 03/03/2025 08:00

He keeps swearing at you? How lovely he sounds. Lots of good advice on here. Get yourself a phone of your own. You may need one.
