To think Britain should have nothing to do with this war

Foodtimeisit · 01/03/2025 12:54

After yesterday's news, Britain shouldn't be the one funding war as USA has said they are out now. There's no chance Britain can fight this war alone with Ukraine against Russia.
Since this war started, our life has only become miserable with CoL increase.
AIBU to think we shouldn't have anything to do this war and we should fix our own problems first before giving away our tax money?

If we wanted to stand up to Putin then we needed it to do it in 2014 when Crimea was annexed, or Abkhazia before that.

Where were all the armchair generals and history lecturers then ?

Mainly turning a blind eye whilst enjoying warm homes and jobs dependent on cheap gas.

And a fair few making like bandits, selling them cars and iPhones.

We are not the heroes we like to think we are. We only finally made a stand against Russian aggression and started sanctioning people because it was politically expedient for people like Boris. A welcome distraction from domestic woes.

Sadly, Ukraine is lost and the OP is correct.

Whether they negotiate for peace or continue to fight, we can’t help them.

We now need to strengthen NATO to ensure Putin remains deterred.

This makes no sense. If Ukraine can't be defended, neither can the rest of Europe. If we can strengthen NATO then we should do so immediately.

Keep planting that astroturf - it’s never going to grow.

And then when the first missile strikes uk soil we wonder why on earth we got involved

I disagree . I think Putin only wants Ukraine. It’s clearly always been about the natural resources and he thought it would be easy as Zelensky isn’t an experienced politician or leader. I think a lot of countries backing Ukraine were hoping to help and get something in return (access again to those natural resources) but now it’s gone on so long that Trump has steamrollered in and made it clear what it’s always been about, thought he could get it sorted asap and is now losing his temper as he can’t. He will be warning us off next and telling any country that backs Ukraine that they are also going to be responsible for WW3

Edited

Lol. That's what they thought about Hitler. By the time they realised, he was much stronger having taken resources from the countries he invaded.

It's naive in the extreme to think he will stop there.

It’s becoming increasingly apparent that Zelenskyy wants us to up our contribution to the war. Financial aid is no longer helping. He wants feet on the ground - wants us to provide human fodder for their war. How many on here baying for Russia to be destroyed would be happy with their sons, husbands, brothers going to fight in Ukraine? Not many I’ll bet. Financial aid can only help so far, but then you need actual foot soldiers. Money won’t buy soldiers, only finance weapons. Russia will win eventually without Europe providing people to fight for them.

Don't be ridiculous

Perhaps you and the other poster who replied similarly could now answer the same questions about the part of Ukraine occupied by Russia?

@IcecreamWhatSandwich
Google is your friend.
But HTH with some of it. Russians form 48% of population of Donetsk, which Putin annexed so even here your logic is flawed.
Do you know anything at all about the history of Eastern Europe and USSR?
It was a long term strategy to resettle Russians to other republics in order to ‘dilute’ the ethnic populations. This was done to keep them under control.

Indeed. And some aren't. And the EU definitely isn't. The poster I was replying to was specifically moaning about the EU organisation not making contributions, not countries who also happen to be in the EU.

The clue is in the word “union” and you have seen the list of the European countries who are in the EU.

Rosesducks · 01/03/2025 20:01

why does Trump want Ukraine’s minerals? At a guess with those minerals in American hands, China’s economic chokehold weakens, Europe comes crawling for a piece of the pie, and the U.S. gets to dictate the terms of tomorrow’s economy with the rare earth minerals.

Countries in NATO:

  7. Denmark
  8. Estonia
  9. France

Plenty of them are in the EU.

I didn't realise there are so many war hungry people here.
I think the solution should be diplomatic negotiations and peace.

🤣 who doesn’t?

Give Putin a bell and talk him round

Reetpetitenot · 01/03/2025 19:59

And do you concede that the Russian population of Ukraine is about 20%, not the ridic figure you claimed earlier?

IcecreamWhatSandwich · 01/03/2025 19:46

Perhaps you and the other poster who replied similarly could now answer the same questions about the part of Ukraine occupied by Russia?

What, you mean the bits of Ukraine Russia has illegally annexed this century? Well, I wouldn't expect actual Ukrainians to hang about in enemy occupied territory, so obviously the Russian population is going to be larger in those regions now. Anyway, Putin doesn't just want the regions he's already stolen, does he? He wants ALL of Ukraine. And more.

I don’t agree at all. Ukraine is certainly not lost. Russia have run out of weapons, soldiers and resources, and we can at this point, as a continent, determine the end of this particular war with enough political will.

@Biscuitsnotcookies they certainly have the raw materials and can probably unearth their how to manuals. It's building the processing and manufacturing facilities that will take time but they are an extremely resourceful country.

Exactly, if they ever decommissioned fully in the first place….

Lotusflower16 · 01/03/2025 19:42

Calm down! I totally agree, but then again I won't give 1p of my money to foreign causes, overall. I only contribute to UK-focussed local charities, really local ones. I only buy the Big Issue from native sellers, on principle. I am fine with the UK being friends of Saudis, they buy our armaments, I think it is vile we get involved in changing governments be it by peaceful means (colour revolutions) or war (Iraq) - if they want women's rights and gender rights, let them do it themselves. Same about Ukraine. I genuinely don't have the capacity to care for any cause that is non-UK. I resent any foreign aid. I think those who are for it, should pay for it individually. So many people think the same, but they are compelled to virtue-signal, either because of their careers or their so-called friends. Briefly, I resent every penny, never mind million. spent on foreign aid, Ukraine included, whilst our own suffer.

You are just another old, ignorant pos who thinks politics should be the same as it used to be during the Iron Curtain. You and the other sad fucks on this thread, who imagine yourselves better than the people who try to protect Europe from Russia, should go fkc yourselves.

Don’t cheer for a war you’re not prepared to fight in yourself or see your family members go off to fight first.

You realise they are cheering for Ukraine not Russia?

Alexandra2001 · 01/03/2025 19:40

HelplessSoul · 01/03/2025 18:49

Considering Putin cant even "get" Ukraine after 3 years, will be a hard job for him to go after anyone else.

And if you feel its morally right to defend Ukraine who wouldnt ever do the same for the UK, then yeh - be sure to get your children on the front line first in your pursuit of standing up for that "right".

🤦‍♂️

Putin hasn't succeeded because of American help, once that goes...

Then it will be the Baltic states and people like you will ensure we stand back and do nothing.

My cousin was killed in NI, my uncle, who i didn't know, in WW2, both deaths devasted our family but whats the choice? allow terrorists to rule? allow the UK/Europe to become part of a re born USSR ?

Atm Ukraine is doing the dying, we are expected to provide the munitions, so all we can hope is people like Starmer and Macron can talk Trump round.

Putin will only stop once he realises he cannot win, he'll gain land and keep Crimea but that maybe the cost of peace but it wont happen through capitulation.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 01/03/2025 19:39

Maybe Ukraine won’t be so quick to sacrifice their nuclear weapons again. Probably it’s the first thing they will do, if the US and allies do not fulfil their obligations

juldan · 01/03/2025 19:30

IcecreamWhatSandwich · 01/03/2025 19:03

Perhaps Putin is mainly interested in invading territory where: a) most of the population is Russian, b) it is historically part of Russia, c) previous US administrations refused to allow the territory to be neutral and deployed WMD there.

The lesson taught by the history of 'domino effects' isn't completely clearcut, is it?

Why do you expect the EU to make contributions to NATO when it's not a member? Very strange.

As of 2025, the European Union (EU) countries that are also members of NATO are:

  1. Belgium
  2. Bulgaria
  3. Croatia
  4. Czech Republic
  5. Denmark
  6. Estonia
  7. France

As a Pole I'm utterly disgusted you blithely say things were better when we & other Eastern Europeans (an amorphous 'they' to you) were brutally subjugated. So selfish. W your I'm alright Jack attitude, 'Saudis are fine bc they buy our armaments, women's rights don't matter bc they're overseas', I wonder if you would expect any other country to help us if we had a misogynistic dictator or war?

I agree not everyone can be helped, mostly we can't, but no charity or even sympathy is an extreme attitude. Would you really say any aid given is immoral when in some countries children die of starvation, in comparison to here, where many suffer but that is rarer? I agree aid can't be given now but it's a bit much to say it was always wrong to give it.

Edited

I completely agree. My F’s family are Czech and my F was a refugee from Communism. I didn’t see a lot of his family until I was 20 because of the ‘Iron Curtain’, because my F would have been arrested if we’d visited then Czechoslovakia.

Remember the Berlin Wall as well? And the sheer joy when it came down? And then the Velvet Revolution in Prague? The excitement that was felt when the Iron Curtain came down indicates just what difficult times they had been.

There were also real fears of a nuclear war in those days, which led to the ‘arms race’. Hardly a safe world during the Cold War.
