To think Britain should have nothing to do with this war

Foodtimeisit · 01/03/2025 12:54

After yesterday's news, Britain shouldn't be the one funding war as USA has said they are out now. There's no chance Britain can fight this war alone with Ukraine against Russia.
Since this war started, our life has only become miserable with CoL increase.
AIBU to think we shouldn't have anything to do this war and we should fix our own problems first before giving away our tax money?

I think Putin only wants Ukraine.
And a bit of Georgia. And Transnistria. And Chechnya. I don't think he believes in Kazakhstan being a real country either? And he's not really letting go of Belarus...

Exactly, thank god someone on here can see what it's really about.

No, they really can’t.

And another one

Big protest against the Musk-Trump axis outside SpaceX headquarters.

I mean getting involved in politics or take to the streets is an option?
And I know this is happening but clearly not in big numbers.

Here is an example
https://bsky.app/profile/muschelschloss.bsky.social/post/3ljdnlcoou22n

"NOW: Crowd chants "#Zelenskyy is a hero" outside of #Tesla Dealership in Manhattan as Anti-Elon protesters occupy the inside."

sahmtoosen · 01/03/2025 13:08

I disagree . I think Putin only wants Ukraine. It’s clearly always been about the natural resources and he thought it would be easy as Zelensky isn’t an experienced politician or leader. I think a lot of countries backing Ukraine were hoping to help and get something in return (access again to those natural resources) but now it’s gone on so long that Trump has steamrollered in and made it clear what it’s always been about, thought he could get it sorted asap and is now losing his temper as he can’t. He will be warning us off next and telling any country that backs Ukraine that they are also going to be responsible for WW3

Go look at substack, which is apart from mainstream American media. From Scott Dworkin:

“Speaking of JD Vance—planned protests forced him to cancel his original hotel booking and change venues for a ski trip in Vermont this weekend. Multiple demonstrations are scheduled to go forward today anyway.
In Kentucky, students from 8 universities protested against Trump’s order to end DEI programs. “I think the biggest misconception here is that this is about tilting a playing field,” Political Science Professor David Niven said. “When in reality, it’s about untilting it, making sure that universities are open to all.”
“Tesla Takedown” protests are gaining steam around the country, as hundreds of people marched to Tesla’s Palo Alto, CA headquarters on Friday. Last week, we also saw demonstrations in Charlotte, Ft. Lauderdale, San Francisco, Seattle, and many other cities. It’s estimated that there have been events like these at over 100 locations—including charging stations, showrooms and dealerships—across the world.
Following an enormous public outcry, the maga club at The Villages in Florida canceled an event with pardoned Jan 6 rioters—planned for yesterday. Thank you to all the folks who spoke out against this unhinged nonsense.
The Democratic National Committee filed a lawsuit yesterday, blasting Trump’s “illegal executive order ending free and fair elections.” The DNC statement said: “Democrats will use every tool at our disposal, including aggressively confronting Trump’s illegal actions in the courts.”
Lastly, Sen. Bernie Sanders slammed Jeff Bezos for announcing that The Washington Post was going to make its opinion pages essentially more Republican: “This is what Oligarch ownership of the media looks like: The second-richest guy in the world, Bezos, owns WaPo. He has now declared that the editorial page of that paper is going Trump right-wing. Surprise, Mr. Musk agrees. We must support independent media.”

Yes - the USA is quickly becoming a Fascist state. Press is controlled by the government, Putin has his mad MAGA thugs 'pardoned' after attacking their seat of democracy and the police. He keeps repeating God is on his side and the extreme fundamentalist Christians cheer him in and he talks like it's his 'manifest destiny' to sieze land from Canada, Greenland, Panama etc etc. Trump and Musk are clearly dangerously insane.

Did you mean Trump?

Reetpetitenot · 01/03/2025 22:12

Foodtimeisit · 01/03/2025 20:59

How does this money to fund war miraculously appears while there's no money to give pay rise to our nurses and emergency staff or the teachers?

You think seized Russian assets should just be doled out to willy nilly by the UK govt? There are rules, which luckily the UK is willing to abide by.

Fawful · 01/03/2025 22:11

Even if you are doing this for free, he's getting a poor return on his investment, that's for sure

DodoTired · 01/03/2025 22:09

You have to be quite daft to think that people want to have a war when there is a REAL option of negotiations and long lasting piece.

read a little on negotiations and peace with Hitler and how it went for all involved.

first of all, Russia isn’t offering peace. They want to continue to occupy whatever they grabbed, with no reparations and no guarantees of long lasting peace.
second, you can’t really trust Putin anyway, so a promise of peace is not enough either.

@Petricia @MasterBeth he cannot win Ukraine they are in a war of attrition. What on earth makes you think he would dare to touch nato soil?

But the US does not want Universal healthcare. That's just another way of thinking nothing to do with defense spending or Europe.

I am not talking about whether Americans want universal healthcare or not. I'm addressing OP's statement that she'd rather the money spent on the NHS rather than defence and security. My point is that you need a country first before worrying about welfare programs.

Wildflowers99 · 01/03/2025 22:02

joysexreno · 01/03/2025 21:57

I am American. Where do you expect to hear these Americans shouting from? Republicans and billionaires now control the entire government and basically all major US news outlets. Or do you mean the Americans of Mumsnet should come here and complain?

Everyone I personally know who isn't a Trumper is being vocal, but we don't exactly have great opportunities to share our views.

Also, Trump people are very frightening and their leader has made it clear that he will condone crushing any dissenters, so it's quite terrifying. My little brother is now unwilling to talk politics on WhatsApp due to Meta's alignment. It's quickly becoming a fascist state.

Terrifying.

As awful as it is watching Trump as a Brit, it must be 10000 times worse actually being governed by him.

I’ve been very proud of Starmer this week, and if he continues in this vein I will vote for him at the next election.

Fangisnotacoward · 01/03/2025 22:01

If you were Ukrainian, or Zelenskyy, why should you be willing to give up one inch of your country to Russia because the USA says you should. And also be more thankful, and give up 50% of your rare minerals.

If France decided to invade the England because it historically had one ruler 600 years ago, would everyone in the UK just shrug their shoulders and say "meh, seems fair". I doubt it, so why should Ukrainians be expected to do the same?

DdraigGoch · 01/03/2025 22:01

Foodtimeisit · 01/03/2025 13:18

So no one can put their thoughts out and if they do then you want to shut them down by saying Putin is pay them. It's absolutely ridiculous

Even if you are doing this for free, he's getting a poor return on his investment, that's for sure.

AgnesX · 01/03/2025 13:03

Do you know any 20th century history (especially mid century....) at all?

Think about it and then think about your question.

This!

My goodness OP, please consider that whilst nobody "wants" this war, to give into Putin is an unthinkable option.

The OP supports appeasement to fascists.

That didn't go well before WWII and it won't go well now.

If you give in to authoritarians like Putin they will only get worse. The whole of eastern Europe is at risk. We cannot let Russia invade the Baltic states, the rest of Ukraine, even Poland.

We are involved already because we share a continent and we share a vision of democracy.

This!

Hitler justified taking bits of other countries because they “used to be part of Germany” and look where that led.

Can you imagine how the world would react if the UK tried to take over somewhere like India because it used to be part of the British Empire? That’s the same logic that Hitler used and now is the same logic that Russia is using. It can’t be appeased.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 01/03/2025 13:49

This is absolutely true. But it is the Americans that have elected a bullying fuckwit as their president, so some anger with them is probably inevitable at the moment.

Of course, there will be Americans that are horrified by Trump's behaviour, but sadly, they are not very visible or vocal at the moment.

That still doesn’t make sense because they spend a bigger proportion of their GDP on government-funded healthcare programs than we do. The money that they have spent on defence has not come from spending less on healthcare than Europe.

Petricia · 01/03/2025 21:53

Joystir59 · 01/03/2025 21:48

Do we share values with Ukraine then? Aren't they typically very conservative, homophobic, xenophobic, religious? Not sure I share their values.

Stereotype.

Ukraine is pluralistic regarding religion.
They have both Catholics and Orthodox. Zelenskyy is Jewish so to accuse him of being a Nazi as the Russians have done is doubly offensive.

Ukraine has democratic elections and freedom of speech.

Ukraine has universal healthcare and does not have the death penalty (and hasn’t for about 30 years).

America is a country that has freedom
of speech in the extreme but also has no universal healthcare and in some
states the criminal justice system still gasses, electrocutes, shoots or poisons their prisoners. They also lock up kids for life in prison.

In many ways we have more in common with modern Ukraine than the modern USA.

So, anyone shouldn't be able to discuss their point of view if it's different to you? I think US needs to liberate UK first and get us our freedom of speech

Its clear from this that the UK allows people to be terminally thick as well as giving them the right to free speech
