To think Britain should have nothing to do with this war

After yesterday's news, Britain shouldn't be the one funding war as USA has said they are out now. There's no chance Britain can fight this war alone with Ukraine against Russia.
Since this war started, our life has only become miserable with CoL increase.
AIBU to think we shouldn't have anything to do this war and we should fix our own problems first before giving away our tax money?

I don't agree w all of this & I have huge sympathy for Ukraine. As a Pole, I am v worried that Poland will be next. But I wish I could remember this historian whose article I read - he said, people keep seeing Putin as the new Hitler. In actuality, he's more of a new USSR leader. I doubt he wants more than the USSR whose collapse he called the worst 20th century geopolitical disaster. I pray he will not get any. But I thunk it's v important people don't go for easy Hitler comparisons & understand the USSR context.

I think you are largely right on this. Prisoners of geography makes the same point. He wants to unite mother Russia and reform the USSR. It’s why he doesn’t recognise Ukraine and its legitimate sovereign state. There’s no way he keeps a peace deal until he has at least all of Ukraine and probably Moldova. He can sort of unite some of the others back to the motherland with puppet governments or interfering in elections for now.

What he does after that is anyone’s guess. But a signed piece of paper won’t stop him until he has what he wants.

OP, the situation in Ukraine IS our problem!

I am pretty familiar with European history and how it goes for the common people. Solution should be world peace not war.

Are you sure you don’t need to brush up a bit on the Munich Agreement?

Because if you apply your logic to the 1930s you would probably be speaking German right now (if your family hadn’t been ethnically ‘cleansed’ out of existence, of course.)

I didn't realise there are so many war hungry people here.
I think the solution should be diplomatic negotiations and peace.

I agree with you entirely. The solution should be diplomatic negotiations and peace. However, having seen the performance of Trump and Vance yesterday, I don't think they know the meaning of either term - there was no diplomacy or peace in their brutal and unwarranted attack on Zelensky and the Ukraine. And the only diplomacy Putin undertstands is down the barrel of a gun.

You see, the problem with diplomacy is that it takes two sides to agree upon it - and America Russia want peace on their terms. The funny thing is that whilst Trump and Putin are falling over themselves to be mates, it seems that neither has fully understood that they both want the same thing - access to the Ukraines land and resources. And you know which country has the best track record at forming strategic partnerships based on the use of resources - China! Trump is desperate to get at the rare earth minerals to reduce US dependancy on China for rare earth minerals. I know where my next stop on the diplomatic rounds might be if I were Zelensky.

waitingquietly · 01/03/2025 13:37

You seem to think this is nothing to do with us and that if Ukraine gives up it will all be fine . Have you missed the multiple attacks on undersea cabling over the last few months and have you missed the two recent widespread banking app crashes - all sorts of other stuff goes on

I don't think I've ever read such a naïve statement.

You’re right OP.
You should contact president Putin and beg him not to invade us and in return we will not supply any more weapons or money to Zelenskyy.
Peace forever, we can trust the word of Putin.
Nobody has thought of this before, amazing.

Do you know any 20th century history (especially mid century....) at all?

Think about it and then think about your question.

Heraclitus said ‘you cannot fall into the same river twice’. So the circumstances of the mid twentieth century are not those we live in now.

If the sainted EU had kept up its NATO contributions, if their (and our) governments , media etc had observed some basic rules of courtesy (and not burning their boats) towards the POTUS, we might be in a slightly more influential position.

Hwi · 01/03/2025 13:34

Calm down! I totally agree, but then again I won't give 1p of my money to foreign causes, overall. I only contribute to UK-focussed local charities, really local ones. I only buy the Big Issue from native sellers, on principle. I am fine with the UK being friends of Saudis, they buy our armaments, I think it is vile we get involved in changing governments be it by peaceful means (colour revolutions) or war (Iraq) - if they want women's rights and gender rights, let them do it themselves. Same about Ukraine. I genuinely don't have the capacity to care for any cause that is non-UK. I resent any foreign aid. I think those who are for it, should pay for it individually. So many people think the same, but they are compelled to virtue-signal, either because of their careers or their so-called friends. Briefly, I resent every penny, never mind million. spent on foreign aid, Ukraine included, whilst our own suffer.

I'm from a family who served in WWII for peace in Europe.

We need to be part of this to keep our sovereignty and the sovereignty of Europe

DecafDodger · 01/03/2025 13:32

and yes there's a really simple solution to end this war, Russia can get out of Ukraine. Simples.

mugglewump · 01/03/2025 13:32

Britain is the 8th largest contributor to the Ukraine war, but the British media seem to promote the idea that this is Britain alone support Zalensky. The largest support for Ukraine's war are the contries that border Ukraine and Russia, all less wealthy countries than the UK (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland). Denmark, a much small country than ours tho' wealthier, also makes a larger contribution than us. However, despite not having a land border with Ukraine or Russia, we are all threatened by Putin through cyber attacks (ever wondered why banks and NHS systems go down?), meddling in elections and corrupt oligarchs. We should not bury our heads in the sand.

What has given you the idea that UK and US have been the only supporters of Ukraine? UK is not even in the top 10.

By negotiation involving Russia, Ukraine, USA and other allies.

Something along the lines of the Budapest Memorandum in which Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in return for peace guarantees you mean?

sahmtoosen · 01/03/2025 13:08

I disagree . I think Putin only wants Ukraine. It’s clearly always been about the natural resources and he thought it would be easy as Zelensky isn’t an experienced politician or leader. I think a lot of countries backing Ukraine were hoping to help and get something in return (access again to those natural resources) but now it’s gone on so long that Trump has steamrollered in and made it clear what it’s always been about, thought he could get it sorted asap and is now losing his temper as he can’t. He will be warning us off next and telling any country that backs Ukraine that they are also going to be responsible for WW3

USA now being putins puppet should not stop us honouring our long standing agreement to help Ukraine

Exactly. How about Putin just rules the vast country he’s already the dictator of?

NoSleepMum2023 · 01/03/2025 13:27

OP I think the problem with your position is that you think the choice is between two alternatives that actually are not real: a war that is exclusively for the benefit of the Ukraine or a peace deal after which Putin is content to leave it be.

These are not the options we have, they are the ones Putin’s PR machine (and Trump’s) want you to think we have.

if you ask ‘wouldn’t world peace be better’ it is pretty obvious every sane person believes it would be so the conversation can’t really go very far. Similarly if you think diplomacy can be the simple answer I would encourage you to watch the scenes from the Oval office yesterday.

I am pretty familiar with European history and how it goes for the common people. Solution should be world peace not war.

Then you’ll be familiar with Germany ‘reuniting’ with Austria followed by the invasion of Poland and the consequences that followed Europes last attempt at appeasing a megalomaniac dictator.
Russia are NOT currently winning this war - they need it to stop before they run out of cannon fodder… there are ways to end this conflict that don’t entail Russia being allowed to invade and keep another country.
