To think Britain should have nothing to do with this war

After yesterday's news, Britain shouldn't be the one funding war as USA has said they are out now. There's no chance Britain can fight this war alone with Ukraine against Russia.
Since this war started, our life has only become miserable with CoL increase.
AIBU to think we shouldn't have anything to do this war and we should fix our own problems first before giving away our tax money?

There are a lot of people who just seem to say Well, if I was in charge I’d just have world peace.

Great idea. Really excellent. Just talk me through how we get from today to world peace given Putin’s history of reneging on international agreements.

Times like this I wonder what gets taught in History lessons at school. Go read up on European History 1925-1939

I think the OP must have missed those classes.

OP could well be an American which would explain how clueless they appear to be. My US colleague once spent a good 10 minutes arguing with me that WW2 was 1941-1945…

When World War Two began is really a matter of perspective. Yes, the most commonly used date is September 1939, but if you were Czech or Chinese the war had already very much begun before then. It’s a very Anglo-centric date for the start of the war really.

528htz · 01/03/2025 13:53

Pretty poor attempt op.

Calm down! I totally agree, but then again I won't give 1p of my money to foreign causes, overall. I only contribute to UK-focussed local charities, really local ones. I only buy the Big Issue from native sellers, on principle. I am fine with the UK being friends of Saudis, they buy our armaments, I think it is vile we get involved in changing governments be it by peaceful means (colour revolutions) or war (Iraq) - if they want women's rights and gender rights, let them do it themselves. Same about Ukraine. I genuinely don't have the capacity to care for any cause that is non-UK. I resent any foreign aid. I think those who are for it, should pay for it individually. So many people think the same, but they are compelled to virtue-signal, either because of their careers or their so-called friends. Briefly, I resent every penny, never mind million. spent on foreign aid, Ukraine included, whilst our own suffer.

On the face of it I agree with things like charity begins at home - get your house in order before looking at others etc etc etc But the world isn't that simple—we are not a self sufficient independent island. What happens abroad affects us in the UK. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine threatens European security, disrupts global economies, and sets a dangerous precedent. If we don’t support Ukraine the message Russia and other such governments (e.g China) gets is invade and take what you want, the world becomes more unstable, which will have consequences for the UK too. Foreign aid and defense spending aren’t just charity; they’re strategic investments in a more stable world—one where we’re less likely to face bigger crises at home.

These years are Europes good years. Once the fight over precious metals are over we have the issues of environmental refugees and conflict over access to water to come :(

I am pretty familiar with European history and how it goes for the common people. Solution should be world peace not war.

and to get peace you need to have power so that other's cannot invade you. Why on earth you think all these countries who have hostile neighbours have these armed parades? Why do countries have nuclear weapons?

coldandfrostymorning23 · 01/03/2025 13:30

Something along the lines of the Budapest Memorandum in which Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in return for peace guarantees you mean?

Yes, exactly. I think the OP might not know their modern history as well as they think.

I didn't realise there are so many war hungry people here.
I think the solution should be diplomatic negotiations and peace.

Whatever makes you think that people want war??

Just another example of casual prejudice against Americans. FFS. There are plenty of uneducated native Brits.

And yet look at what's leading their country.

This is absolutely true. But it is the Americans that have elected a bullying fuckwit as their president, so some anger with them is probably inevitable at the moment.

Of course, there will be Americans that are horrified by Trump's behaviour, but sadly, they are not very visible or vocal at the moment.

MaggieBsBoat · 01/03/2025 13:48

You can’t „do diplomacy“ with a warmonger. Or bullies.

good luck OP.

Donttellempike · 01/03/2025 13:47

We are a fiat currency nation . Look it up

avillage · 01/03/2025 13:47

It's the same way when Russia tried to invade Afghanistan and Pakistan had to also get involved in the war to stop them coming to our door step. UK needs to step up to stop Russia in Ukraine as well.

😂 what, are you a hippy or something?!

Meanwhile, in the real world.....

dottiehens · 01/03/2025 13:46

Regardless of your posture. Where are be getting the money for the war? 60 percent of the U.K. is in some sort of benefits? Most people would say happy to pay more in taxes but we know most are not even net contributors.

Did you watch the meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy? They tried this already and Russia broke the agreement.

JazzyJelly · 01/03/2025 13:44

Chamberlain thought so too.

You seriously think the CoL is due to .. Ukraine?

Do you know any 20th century history (especially mid century....) at all?

Think about it and then think about your question.

Right? Because what would have happened on WW2 for example without the non-European allies? We probably would have lost.

You are either very naive or simply don’t care about Ukraine and the big picture (e.g China and Taiwan). Ukraine is the victim - they have every right to defend itself against Russian. Acknowledging this and stating that Russia is in the wrong and that the US simply want to rob Ukraine of their natural resources and saying this is wrong is not the same as being 'war hungry.'

Zelenskyy and Ukraine have consistently called for peace, but diplomacy only works when both sides are willing to negotiate in good faith. Russia has shown no signs of that, and stopping support for Ukraine would just reward aggression. What kind of negotiations do you think would actually lead to a just and lasting peace? From what you have read and seen about Putin and Trump makes you think they are peace loving statemen who care about Europe/the world at large rather than power hungry and quite simply self serving?

blueshoes · 01/03/2025 13:42

DecafDodger · 01/03/2025 13:32

and yes there's a really simple solution to end this war, Russia can get out of Ukraine. Simples.

Well said

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 01/03/2025 13:41

OP, taking your post at face value, what do you think that negotiation should look like? How much of his country do you think Zelensky should give away, and how many innocent Ukrainians should be forced to become citizens of the Russian empire?

And when Putin is inspired by his success in Ukraine to invade and attack other European states, what proportion of their countries do you propose he should be given?

Is there a point at which you think perhaps there is no further room for negotiation? Or should the victims simply acquiesce to Russian aggression in order to ensure that there is something that you consider to be "peace"?

Would you feel the same if the aggressor wanted a piece of the UK? Would you be prepared to live under Russian rule if it meant that your neighbours didn't have to engage in war?

Nothatgingerpirate · 01/03/2025 13:40

Neither should effing Czech Republic, but there you go.
