To think Britain should have nothing to do with this war

Foodtimeisit · 01/03/2025 12:54

After yesterday's news, Britain shouldn't be the one funding war as USA has said they are out now. There's no chance Britain can fight this war alone with Ukraine against Russia.
Since this war started, our life has only become miserable with CoL increase.
AIBU to think we shouldn't have anything to do this war and we should fix our own problems first before giving away our tax money?

This.

Putin is currently very depleted, and I don't think he'll be raising anything major any time soon. He may even die from natural causes before that point, but as soon as he gathers his strength, he'll be looking hungrily at other countries around him.

Even if he does die, a chaos might ensue around it which might be an even worse result for Europe.

I can't believe I'm seeing this shit in my lifetime. Men absolutely love the blood, cruelty, destruction and thrill of war. 😔

Actually they don't.

Numbers fell in the armed forces as soon as young men who wanted to join realised they had a real chance of being in combat and it wasn't just peace keeping.

I used to do loads of sports and fitness and had discussions both with military wannabes as well as ex-forces. I still know reservists now who are busier than they used to be.

Oh don't be daft @Foodtimeisit You're deliberately and misrepresenting people's position by calling them 'war hungry'. 🙄It's very manipulative and makes you look like a paid-for Russian troll.

What Trump means by 'peace' is 'surrender'.

Go Google the horrific things that has happened to Ukrainian women and girls at the hands of Russian soldiers before you suggest they should settle for 'peace'.

It won't be peace. The Russians will ensure that their Ukrainian cultural identity will be erased, like the vermin that some people on mainstream Russian TV think the Ukrainians are.

Do you think the Russian Tzar court (sorry 'government') will be happy with just Ukraine?? After having that and re-building, it will embolden him to take a bite out of more of Ukraine or one of their other border countries. That's a big problem.

Edited

The Bucha massacre would be a good starting point @Foodtimeisit

If we hadn't fought we would have come under Hitler's rule. My husband's family would have gone to the gas chambers. Hitler was pretty ruthless with all the defeated populations viewing them as nothing better than cheaplabour in the German cause and quite happy for entire villages to be wiped out as punishment.

Presumably you think that would have been a better outcome.

@countrygirl99
Don't make any presumptions pls

I said there is no appetite for war in this country. People are tried, they don’t want another war, they don’t want to send their sons and daughters to fight in a war in another country.

Ask about, see how many people you know who would willing go and fight today for Ukraine, or who would send their children, with limited resources, training and protection.

History has shown up that British involvement hasn’t always been that welcome.

JustBec · 01/03/2025 15:27

We signed the Budapest Memorandum in 1994. We are involved.

It's not Russians though per se. It's Putin's little cabal of fiendish warmongers. But either way, what can we do? Hitler comparisons are dangerous. US had blanket intervention policy partly bc of ww2 & that got them Vietnam & Iraq. Partly why they are wary now. Not every dictator is Hitler. We can't stop all the evil in the world.

When Putin invades a NATO country we are at war whether that country is Poland, Finland or Turkey.

Far cheaper for NATO to get Ukraine to fight him for all us.

I think the RAF are constantly being scrambled to see Russian jets off as well.

They are.

None of this hits the press but if you know people who are involved it's happening all the time.

@hwi You seem not to understand that the UK Navy etc are chasing the Russians daily out of our waters. The Navy is patrolling all the time and you don't hear about it much (unless you know people in the Forces) but the Russians are constantly trying to gather information for their own ends which is to take control of as much of the world as they can or damage our economy in ways that make us vulnerable.

You seem to dismiss the real threat and be pro Russia.

You're also conflating lots of things.

The US's intervention as you described it is not the same as NATO and us protecting other European countries .

AliasGrace47 · 01/03/2025 15:22

Dotjones · 01/03/2025 14:54

YANBU to think that now the US are pulling out, we should do the same. There's no point taking on Russia without American backing. It's bad for Ukraine, and will be bad for Poland, the Baltic states, Romania (ex-USSR in general to be honest), probably Germany and possibly Finland, but Russia can easily manage to bomb the UK out of existance. At best we could destroy Moscow in retaliation.

Pulling out now and allowing the Russian slaughter machine to move slowly westwards will at least buy us some time to build up our own armed forces and prepare the population for war. We need weapons and we need training (as civilians), we need to start building bunkers and fallout shelters. They may well not be enough but at least we'd have tried.

Best case scenario is Putin is statisfied once Russia has recovered the territory formerly occupied by the USSR. If that's the case, that's kind of a result for the West. Yes it's a shame for people who had hoped for a more stable world after the fall of communism, but if Russians don't want that to be the case, we can't change their minds.

Gad! I absolutely despair at the ignorance of some of those complacent fools starting these 'Britain-First' threads. Don't any of you read history?

I see so many of them on social media I presume lots are bots.

The worse thing is the same people ring up talk radio giving different names excusing Putin. They starting to get cut off now.

Heraclitus said ‘you cannot fall into the same river twice’. So the circumstances of the mid twentieth century are not those we live in now.

If the sainted EU had kept up its NATO contributions, if their (and our) governments , media etc had observed some basic rules of courtesy (and not burning their boats) towards the POTUS, we might be in a slightly more influential position.

Courtesy? What are you gibbering on about.
Zelensky wasn't the one that started a screaming match in front of the press.

And as for Heraclitus did he make any reference to history repeating itself?

Let's not give history the opportunity.

And lots of young men died, many of them working class, many people don’t even wear poppies as a reminder of their sacrifice.

Many people in this country don’t have the appetite for another war overseas. Particularly as we never really come out it politically well.

War has changed. This is being shown by what's going on in Ukraine.

All the kids who play computer games and hack will be very useful in this new type of warfare.

We are all Russian targets anyway. It's not only the cyber attacks but the poisonings Putin has done on British soil.

Purplebunnie · 01/03/2025 15:16

Hwi · 01/03/2025 14:38

I DO understand - he won't touch the UK - all his cronies have their children in our boarding schools and at UK universities, he is not going to bomb his own, is he? If you dislike the fact, you should have protested numerous PMs, who allowed dirty Russian money and their corrupt Russian families settle here since 1992 and buy our politicians since 1994.

And I say again, this is the man who has sent his agents into this country to poison people and not cared who else got in the way.

He would not have cared if his agents died in their efforts and I doubt it would have crossed his mind if an innocent Russian had also got killed

He does not care about individuals he only cares about his greater goal to get Russia back to what it was

Edited - no idea what happened it got posted before I had finished and was in capitals💁

The point is that this is a war with another country in Europe, not the middle east.

If Putin wins, he will creep onwards to other countries on the border, like Hitler did.

The stand against Putin is the same as the stand against Hitler. We have NATO and it's supposed to work.

@Foodtimeisit will not care until it directly affects her. Just see the many Trumpers are crying on social media now they have lost jobs/food stamps/health care.

Luckily most Brits can remember what happens when you appease an aggressive, territory hungry dictator. Last one reached the French coast and bombed the UK.

EE families in social housing doing the menial job fat lazy Brits won't do? OK. One child (conservative estimate) is 9K pa for a state school - 2008 data. If they have 2 kids - you calculate how much these costs the taxpayer, just to put them through school. And now let us speak about them 'paying taxes' - they don't even cover the cost of their offspring schooling! And then the social housing, top ups, credits or whatever they are, plus NHS services - great, isn't it?

You’re forgetting about the population of native Brits that have never worked aren’t you? There’s several generations who have never worked. You are aware that not all working people are not receiving any type of top up from the government? Most EE countries have a better
level of education, government housing and health care. The reason most people come over (unless they are refugees) is because the wages are much higher in the UK. You see it all the time that menial jobs aren’t covered by Brits, the farmers have British fruit and veg pickers leaving in droves because they can’t hack the job. You know that was why the school summer holidays were invented- for the harvest. But the harvesting in the UK is mainly done by immigrants who are used to doing the harvest at home. I send my teens back to Latvia for the summer to do the harvest at a cousins farm and they get a lot out of it. And unfortunately I’m a higher rate tax payer but it is what it is, our responsibility to the society we live in.
