To think Britain should have nothing to do with this war

After yesterday's news, Britain shouldn't be the one funding war as USA has said they are out now. There's no chance Britain can fight this war alone with Ukraine against Russia.
Since this war started, our life has only become miserable with CoL increase.
AIBU to think we shouldn't have anything to do this war and we should fix our own problems first before giving away our tax money?

I wonder how WW2 would have panned out without the support of America. It’s an interesting question with lots of differing opinions

EasternStandard · 01/03/2025 16:07

@HPFA it's not just money, US military kit is needed.

Zelenskyy has said he needs their involvement to keep going.

Tigergirl80 · 01/03/2025 16:06

No I don’t agree. Anyone that agrees with Trump needs their head looking at just like him.

I didn't realise there are so many war hungry people here.
I think the solution should be diplomatic negotiations and peace.

Good idea, well it worked for Neville Chamberlain, didn't it?

Your post has lots of facts completely wrong OP. Noone says the UK is funding a war on Russia. You need to research this 100% more to have a workable opinion.

The whole point is that Russia declared war on Ukraine and they'll just keep going and targeting other countries invading them if Europe and the UK don't come together to fight back. A strong Russia is vey dangerous for the world including us.

I'm curious to know how many people watched the whole hour or so. when I got home it seemed like the webdites were all showing the 10 mins it went to shit.

No, Zelenskyy got very annoyed, spoke over the president, rolled his eyes, spoke in very defiant terms and insinuated the US would be next. I am a massive fan of his, but he was not advised well.

He was too direct. in this instance the tone needed was sycophancy and boot licking. He completely misread the room. Understandable as it was an awful place to have to go cap in hand. But that’s what it was going to take.

AgnesX · 01/03/2025 15:55

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 01/03/2025 13:43

Right? Because what would have happened on WW2 for example without the non-European allies? We probably would have lost.

And your point is what?

Compared to Trump and Vance he behaved like a saint

Zekenskyy should have remained charmingly calm, agreeable and thankful and played them at their own game.

He wasn't the one shouting, he also thanked the American people

Trump and Vance were handed the perfect opportunity to act like a pack of rapid dogs. Zelenskyy should have known this was a trap. He could have made it so much harder for them if he had been open, humble and respectful at all times. I don’t blame him at all, he was pushed to his limits. You can’t meet aggression with aggression in this scenario.

DuncinToffee · 01/03/2025 15:50

EarthSight · 01/03/2025 15:46

@DuncinToffee I think Trump and Vance behaved like bullies, but I think some of it might have been triggered by an earlier snippy & defensive comment he made in reply to a reporter who questioned his attire.

I understand why he was defensive - must have felt so intense to be there and feel ganged up on, but I think he should have smiled restrained himself rather than shooting a barb back. He did a good job of remaining clam with Trump and Vance though, and I think the shit could have hit the fan much worse if he hadn't.

Trump mentioned his attire when he greeted Zelenskyy on arrival.

The reporter is a trusted Trump supporter

Pigwodgeon · 01/03/2025 15:50

Unfortunately Putin's Russia is not a problem that goes away by simply ignoring it. Uk is geographically in Europe, like it or not. Putin doesn't feel particularly warm towards the Uk atm, so thinking he will just leave us alone is wishful thinking.

Mischance · 01/03/2025 15:47

Those advocating doing nothing and keeping out of it and letting Ukraine go down the pan are missing quite a few points.

We have no option but to be involved. If we openly and publicly defy Trump the economic consequences for this country could be huge. And the intelligence consequences and the military consequences.

That is of course apart from the humanitarian consequences - thousands more Ukranians, young and old, slaughtered; other eastern European countries taken over and their citizens subjugated and slaughtered.

We live in a global economy now - whatever happens to another country has spin-offs for us whether we care about those countries or not. We are an island but cannot hide our heads in the sand - this might have protected us against wooden ships at one time - but that is no longer how the world works.

TrainGame · 01/03/2025 15:47

I don’t think you understand the new world order.

Maybe read some news other than Twitter and Facebook once in a while?

Globalisation is over. USA is NOT coming to save us.

Europe will have to fund all its own wars from now on, including NATO, in the next few years, possibly today if Trump decides to pull the plug.

It’s every man for himself now. America is first.

Russia invaded in 2014 and stole Crimea. Then again in 2022.

Russia will keep coming. Look up Dugin, Putin’s imperialist war advisor. FFS actually read something useful.

We will need to look after ourselves from now on, spend our ‘tax money’ on re-arming and if we want democracy to continue that means a free Ukraine so yes we do need to consider their needs and their future because it impacts us.

Stirabout · 01/03/2025 15:47

80% disagree with you OP. Perhaps they understand their history more.

Biscuitsnotcookies · 01/03/2025 15:41

Ultimately there is now a junction. It’s history in the making, and the future will remember this moment.

One direction is to walk away from Ukraine. Fudge a peace deal that holds for a few years, and hope for the best.

The other is to stand by Ukraine. Supplying them with weapons and aid for an indefinite war of attrition. A war that never ends. It will be a low level war that rumbles on and on using vast resources of all kinds.

Neither is appealing is it. Russia won’t back down. Ukraine can’t back down.

The US are pulling out, leaving Europe to sort this out themselves whatever happens. The whole strategy yesterday was to manufacture enough of a rift to use it as a reason to pull the plug, a classic move. Trump can blame Zelenskyy now for intransigence.

Zekenskyy should have remained charmingly calm, agreeable and thankful and played them at their own game.

HPFA · 01/03/2025 15:35

Helping Ukraine will only cost a fraction of what Brexit has cost us.

Why do I get the feeling none of the "concerned posters" starting these endless threads telling us how we can't afford to oppose dictators give a shit about all the money wasted on leaving the EU?

Floralnomad · 01/03/2025 15:35

Foodtimeisit · 01/03/2025 13:24

Pressure should be put on Russia to cease fire.

Ukraine do not want Russia in their territory and they need all the support that can be mustered . A cease fire leaving Russia in charge of parts of Ukraine is not an acceptable resolution . Do you not understand why we went to war over the Falkland Islands ? It’s not a case of being war hungry , it’s a case of you have to defend countries that have been invaded or where does it end ?

Reugny · 01/03/2025 15:35

Namenamchange · 01/03/2025 15:28

@countrygirl99
Don't make any presumptions pls

I said there is no appetite for war in this country. People are tried, they don’t want another war, they don’t want to send their sons and daughters to fight in a war in another country.

Ask about, see how many people you know who would willing go and fight today for Ukraine, or who would send their children, with limited resources, training and protection.

History has shown up that British involvement hasn’t always been that welcome.

Edited

That's why we need to keep giving Ukraine arms.

If Putin decides to go invade a NATO country we are at war. We have already had near misses on land, sea and air with Russian forces.

Figgygal · 01/03/2025 15:32

Foodtimeisit · 01/03/2025 13:24

Pressure should be put on Russia to cease fire.

Why didn't you say that rather than imply ukraine has somehow caused the cost of living crisis?

Noone wants war but they also don't want Russian expansion across Europe. Russia cannot be allowed to take parts of other countries he fancies what he could do is down weapons and withdraw. He's still fucking bombing ukraine on a daily basis,he's literally dropping bombs while Trump is sat in the white House talking about how trustworthy he is. IF US actually withdraws support we should be leaning in more not doing the opposite.
