To think Britain should have nothing to do with this war

After yesterday's news, Britain shouldn't be the one funding war as USA has said they are out now. There's no chance Britain can fight this war alone with Ukraine against Russia.
Since this war started, our life has only become miserable with CoL increase.
AIBU to think we shouldn't have anything to do this war and we should fix our own problems first before giving away our tax money?

Oh really? So let’s cheer for some other countries too then. May as well be inclusive. What a dim comment.

Why would they cheer Zelenskyy to show support for other countries? Yours is the dim comment.

I didn't realise there are so many war hungry people here.
I think the solution should be diplomatic negotiations and peace.

So why isn't Trump telling Putin to withdraw his troops from Ukraine and stop the war now? All Putin has to lose is his pride. If all parties go with what Trump is advocating, Ukraine stands to lose thousand of s km of territory plus vast mineral wealth.

So basically, Trump's idea of peace is to massage Putin's ego, get his filthy mitts on Ukraine's natural resources and maintain his own and Putin's hubristic tendencies. D'you see why that might not be a great idea.

No one in Europe wants this war, least of all Ukraine, but why are you expecting Zelenskyy to roll over and not Putin? Putin is using Russians as cannon fodder. Why are you not questioning his actions? Are you a Putin apologist? Putin (and Trump) have lied, and lied. It is not Zelenskyy who is the bad guy here. It is not Zelenskyy who should be giving up his country to two greedy depots.

Don’t cheer for a war you’re not prepared to fight in yourself or see your family members go off to fight first.

Nobody’s cheering for a war.

Bloody proud of the UK.

Can't say I blame them.

Dictatorships have a habit of imprisoning (and executing) previous opponents and their families. I'd have been out the door by the morning after the inauguration.

Good luck negotiating with a dictator. Putin INVADED a peaceful country, claiming an ancient right over their land - sound familiar?
Appeasement didn’t work before and it won’t work again.

This.

Of course we should be involved.

Not only is it morally right, not only did we promise to protect Ukraine’s borders, but it’s also in our interest. Putin will be after not just the countries that former russia’s Soviet empire but the whole of Europe.

Crumblebee8 · 01/03/2025 18:11

RubyTuesday48 · 01/03/2025 17:59

No it isn't like WW2 but it does have similarities to the 1930s with appeasement that still led to a war that we were militarily unprepared for.

It's not the same at all because back in the 1930s countries could fight each other with troops and bombs, without nuclear weapons in the mix. If we went into an all out war with Russia today, all of humanity would be wiped out, so it isn't an option.

Rosesducks · 01/03/2025 18:10

Biscuitsnotcookies · 01/03/2025 18:00

History tells us Putin can’t be trusted so you can hardly blame Zelenskyy for questioning their integrity.

No one wants the war to continue, but the fact is Trump is prioritising a MINERALS deal over and above the death of tens of thousands of Ukrainians. The war isn’t over and he is already totally disregarding the carnage.

Good Lord. It is just shocking. People are dying as we speak and Trump is lining his pockets with their blood. I’m appalled.

I have no faith in the ‘peace’ deal if one were to even exist.

Let’s be clear: Putin can’t be trusted on that, we agree. But wars aren’t won by trust; they’re won by leverage. And leverage isn’t built on noble intentions or empty moralizing it’s built on resources, strategy, and, yes, money.

Ukraine’s minerals aren’t just wealth beneath the ground; they are power, influence, and the very foundation of what will shape the post-war world. To ignore them, to pretend they don’t matter, is to leave Ukraine vulnerable long after the last shot is fired.

As for Trump Every world leader prioritizes deals over death; they just don’t say it out loud. You call it shocking. I call it predictable.

The uncomfortable truth is this: wars are not waged on sentiment, and they are not resolved with tears. They are resolved by those who understand that strength, both economic and military, is the only currency that matters when the smoke clears.

Now, you can shake your head, you can call it grotesque, but tell me what alternative do you propose?

That Ukraine fight on indefinitely, bleeding itself dry with no long-term plan for stability?

That the West pour in money and weapons forever with no plan for what happens after?

War isn’t just about winning it’s about what comes next. And what comes next isn’t decided by who suffered the most; it’s decided by who controls the resources, the alliances, and the future economy.

I am amazed you see this as a choice personally. It’s not a choice. Russia are not going to give up and go away are they? Deal or no deal. A war of attrition will eventually run Russia’s resources into the ground.

"A war of attrition will eventually run Russia's resources into the ground." This is true, and seems to have been Biden's plan: arm Ukraine enough to make Russia wear itself out, but not enough to escalate to WW3. If on the other hand Ukraine is allowed to fall, the result nay be similar as far as Russia us concerned: a Pyrrhic victory culminating in a brutal and costly Russian occupation of Ukraine. If Putin really can't see this, his days will be numbered.

I’m sick to death of wars and power struggles. Power hungry mad men! Ruining the peace of the majority that just want to live in harmony, but no fucking no. It’s the younger generation that are sent out with their rifles and bombing equipment to do that actual fighting whilst them narcissistic bastard hide in their bomb and bullet proof residences. It makes me sick. The ‘leaders’ should get in amongst it but they won’t risk their owns lives, but they’re more than happy to throw younger innocent population to the lions.

Greedy, never satisfied, power hungry dictatoring bastards!

Edited

The only hope we have is the younger generation say no to it. I've seen the videos of Ukrainians being dragged off the streets and out of their homes because they've refused conscription and it's appalling.

The Russian government has murdered a UK citizen living in the UK via their attempt to murder the Skripals. It is as simple as that. We are definitely in a serious state of conflict. That’s before we get to the hacking, the attempts to cut our undersea cables and buzzing our air space. It’s time to seize AND USE all assets of Russians in the UK that we know are close to the regime. All property, all money, the whole lot.

To add to all this, there is suspicion that Russian bots were involved in the Brexit referendum

I didn't realise there were so many stupid people on Mumsnet. Gone are the days when it was full of educated intellectuals.

'First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me'

Capitulation is not peace.

Putin has already broken all of his deals with Ukraine in the lead up to the 2022 invasion. And Putin has made it very clear he will make no concessions. There is NO DEAL.

People will use World War 2 as their reference point. Many of us were raised by those who fought in it (I was partly raised by my grandparents) and have heard their first hand accounts and we will always be extremely grateful to that generation for our freedom. We are proud of them and take our example from them, scoff all you like. The times may change but human nature does not and what we are seeing in putin is the same megalomania we saw in hitler.

Capitulation is not peace.

spuddy4 · 01/03/2025 18:05

@Maray1967 so we send our army over for that? I think we need to look at our own sketchy behaviour because the British haven't been saints in the past either so should every country we've wronged come here to put that right? At what point do you stop looking back and look at the present and the future?

Would Ukraine help the UK in a war and provide us billions in weapons, cash and free training for troops? Or how about house UK citizens too and dole out free benefits and cash and whatnot?

The answer is a resounding no.

This is all on Zelensky, and thankfully Trump handed him his ass back and booted it out of the White House.

As much as Putin is to blame for the war, Zelenksy allowed it to happen because he was too engrossed on sucking off NATO. And look where thats got him.

The USA is right - why should their taxpayer money fund this bullshit war that the USA has neither started or has a horse in the race for?

US taxpayers are being fleeced and the likes of Zelenksy will never pay a dime back.

Kudos to Trump and JD for their stance - Zelenksy thought he was clever by trying to embarass the hand that feeds him - instead, he got a royal fucking bitch slap - all while the worlds media was watching it.

Serves him right.

Most sensible post I've read. I suspect that there's not many who would make the ultimate sacrifice or send their family members but expect others to go to the battlefield.

Eh? The choice is between ‘strategy or self destruction?’ How is this the most sensible post? It makes no sense? Strategy or self destruction - What does this even mean?
