I got beef and mushrooms and egg fried rice on Wednesday. It'll be OK if I heat it thoroughly tonight won't it?

And ready meals contain cooked rice which you re-heat...

Yes I do wonder what the crossover is between people who think you can’t reheat rice, and people who buy precooked rice in microwaveable pouches…

You're not supposed to reheat rice

Said no Chinese person ever. Asian people reheat rice all the time.

If you've ever ordered/eaten fried rice then you've eaten reheated rice. Fact.

Ezlo · 01/03/2025 11:31

I'm alive! Hurrah!

I feel fine.

OP did you survive to tell the tale?

notatinydancer · 01/03/2025 10:22

I heat up special fried rice with sweet and sour chicken sometimes always been fine.

PositivityVibes · 01/03/2025 09:38

Always reheated rice, in fact had 2 day old Chinese for tea last night, bloody gorgeous, the flavours seem to be better in leftovers.

2Rebecca · 01/03/2025 09:32

We reheat and eat takeaways up to 2 days later, similar if we've made too much rice in rice cooker ourselves. It goes in a tub and gets reheated and eaten later in the week.

nutbrownhare15 · 01/03/2025 09:29

Not the rice https://www.food.gov.uk/safety-hygiene/home-food-fact-checker The rest I'd reheat thoroughly as long as it's been in the fridge

No, it depends on luck.

If you're hit with bacillus cereus poisoning you'll know about it.

Disturbia81 · 01/03/2025 09:15

I have never had food poisoning and break all sorts of these rules.
It depends on your guts and how hardy they are

lottiegarbanzo · 01/03/2025 08:48

Outbreaks of food poisoning from rice usually originate from takeaways with poor hygiene. They occur in clusters.

Christmasbear1 · 01/03/2025 08:44

I ate left over Chinese takeaway for about 3 days last week. I know you're not supposed to reheat rice but I'm south Asian and we've always done it. Never had any food poisoning from it

DiscoBeat · 01/03/2025 08:42

I'd eat it except the rice.

lottiegarbanzo · 01/03/2025 08:41

The problem is not with reheating rice. It is with reheated rice.

The danger point is when the rice cools - how long it was left out warm then tepid, before being refrigerated, allowing growth of poisonous spores.

Once the poison has been exuded into the rice, it's there. You can't kill poison.

We literally do this every single week (and sometimes eat it up to four days afterwards). Never a single case of food poisoning.

There's a lot of misunderstanding about the problems with rice. The risk is not in the reheating; it's in leaving rice out at room temperature for a prolonged period - this can cause the development of a bacteria, Bacillus cereus, which produces a toxin. Once this toxin has been produced, it cannot be killed by heating, and it causes a really awful - and potentially fatal - illness. But as long as you don't allow it to develop in the first place, by putting the leftover rice in the fridge directly after your meal, there's no issue with reheating it later.

Correct!

So many people simply think you "can't reheat rice", which is rubbish. If cooked quickly and refrigerated, it's all good!

Mindymomo · 01/03/2025 08:33

Bit late, but my adult DS eats leftover takeaway food 3/4 days after, we wouldn’t but he seems ok doing this.

gettingolderbutcooler · 01/03/2025 08:28

Def yes- eat it!

I would, but then this sort of thing never bothers me

SweetBaklava · 01/03/2025 07:33

One day, yes.
Two days, speaking from bitter experience no

Plump82 · 01/03/2025 07:31

I immediately thought of Phil Wang as well!
As to eating it, yep I definitely would and have. Manu times! And I'm still here to tell the tale.

MrsClatterbuck · 01/03/2025 07:29

I do this with prawn satay as long as it has been refrigerated after cooling. And heat really well. A couple of weeks ago I left it out overnight and wouldn't risk it so threw it out. Our Chinese is very generous and I do my best but usually only manage half of it.

ArmyBarbie · 01/03/2025 07:25

I often eat leftover takeaway a couple of days later. If it looks and smells ok then it's edible in my book. I would however heat really thoroughly and then leave it to cool a bit.
