Would you judge this in someone’s house?

I’m currently re-decorating parts of my house. I’ve come across a website that sells prints for the walls and I’ve found some I really like;

This house is full of love, laughter, and a little bit of what the fuck.

Pardon the mess, I decided not to give a shit today.

If you’re happy and you know it, it’s your meds!

As you can probably tell, our house is already a little bit eccentric with its decor… but would you judge someone for having prints like that on the wall with children living in the house or am I just overthinking it? 😅

Hi op

Your original question was ‘would you judge’ and you have now learned that the majority of people will judge, and more often than not it will be negatively.

So what will you do with this information? Will it inform your decision? Or not?

Personally, I wouldn’t put a quotation up on the wall. And definitely not one that included bad language. Mainly because I think it’s very tacky and not at all interesting.

I would probably judge both your taste and parenting…but I would do so silently. I probably couldn’t resist drawing attention to your ‘wall art’ however, so I would probably say ‘Oh, I really like your wall art’, which you would see as confirmation that you made an excellent choice and everyone on Mumsnet was wrong after all.

Are you also middle aged and dress like an 80s kids TV presenter - dungarees, colourful hair, and big glasses ‘I’m mad me!’ style?

That’s the exact image I got 😁

Cucy · 28/02/2025 15:06

I agree!

Although I wouldn’t buy myself signs with swear words in, I think posters are being overly harsh and judgemental.

But I wouldn’t expect anything different from many of the MNers, as many of them don’t like people who are slightly different to them and they generally want to only do or have things to impress other people.

I remember the thread about gold hooped earrings and it was like the OP had killed a puppy.
Posters were calling her all sorts of names and saying how chavy they were and no one wears them anymore and it just looks trashy etc.

Then someone posted a photo of Kate Middleton recently wearing almost identical ones to the ones OP had and it all went very quiet 😂

TheWhiteUmbrella · 28/02/2025 15:06

Since you asked, I would silently judge you, yes. Those signs make me cringe.

IkeaJesusChrist · 28/02/2025 15:04

Tacky as fuck.

Rainbows678 · 28/02/2025 13:39

Wow, I didn’t expect so many responses!

I’m not ‘trying’ to be eccentric at all, I just have very different tastes! For example, I have quite a lot of tapestries on the walls in the house and on the ceilings, quite unique patterns too - mushrooms with eyes etc - because I like them and they make my house feel like a home to me.

I also have quite unique prints in my house already - my dog dressed up in military uniform, old paintings of Victorian people wearing balloon hats - again, because I like them.

We are a household where we say what we think and don’t really hold back, so it doesn’t bother me having swear prints on the walls. In terms of other children, no other children come into the house so that’s not an issue. I’m not “being mean to people with mental health issues” either as I have plenty of them myself and quite like the tongue in cheek aspect of quotes like that.

I don’t think MN is probably the best place to ask after what you explained in terms of decor.

I would bet most homes here lean on neutrals as being the epitome of taste.

InAFettle · 28/02/2025 15:03

Seems like unless you've got Elephant Fart Farrow and Ball on the walls and the only decor in your home is a solitary reed diffuser then, in MN land you're a tacky chav. Or you're tryhard.

It's easy to see where the high school bullies come from innit.

OMG the people on here who accuse the OP of being "mainstream" when you are all completely agreeing with each other!! YOU are mainstream, clearly. The OP is obviously right to describe herself as a little bit eccentric, because while these artworks may be 'mass produced' she is apparently the only person who actually wants them on her walls.

Sorry OP you've had a right kicking by the middle-class snobs of MN. God forbid any of them 'live laugh love' when they could keep on with the 'judge sneer mock'. So edgy, you guys!

OP put what you want in your house and fuck the haters.

If something is mass-produced and readily available in shops - like all the things the OP describes are - then by definition, they are mainstream. You can find prints like that in Home Bargains, B&M etc.

Nothing wrong with those shops, I love them! - so it's not being shady, just truthful.

People can put up what they want in their own house - but the OP asked for opinions and said she was straight-talking so 🤷‍♀️

FamBae · 28/02/2025 15:02

You asked a question, and I presume you wanted honest answers, the majority of answers is a resounding yes or not suitable for children and then you get defensive. I really don't know why you posted in the first place.

She can't be the only person who wants them on her walls, if she was the company producing them would have gone out of business. The fact that there's a market for this stuff demonstrates that it's not eccentric.

Moreover eccentric people don't care what other people think about them and they certainly wouldn't feel the need to buy decorations or other household objects designed to advertise their eccentricity.

This would all be completely irrelevant if the OP hadn't actively sought people's opinions on it. But she did ask!

FastFood · 28/02/2025 14:58

Oh yes I would judge hard. And come back to judge again. And probably take a picture to keep judging on a daily basis until the end of time.

Ladamesansmerci · 28/02/2025 14:57

I mean I personally find them cringe, but it's not my house. I wouldn't judge you, it's your money and your home.

I have anime figurines and things like Pokémon plushies in my house, so genuinely no judgement here, I know plenty would judge my nerdy ass self.

Edit: some in here are so aggy, for what 🤣 it's your house OP, please put in it what you like and what makes you happy. Everyone has different tastes. It would be incredibly boring if everyone's house looked the same. Personally I love a house with eclectic colours and a higgledy-piggledy vibe.

MWNA · 28/02/2025 14:57

Tasteless and naff. Just so unoriginal.

Lentilweaver · 28/02/2025 14:55

People who describe themselves as eccentric, mad, kooky or wacky are so tedious. Those are descriptives to be used by others.

SpidersAreShitheads · 28/02/2025 14:53

My two DC are also autistic and we've not had any other children in the house for years, so I understand that point.

However, I would say that with autistic DC it's even MORE important to model appropriate social behaviour which generally wouldn't include chucking the F-bomb around in polite company.

I'm an autistic woman too, so I appreciate straight-talking and "not holding back". I can also swear like an absolute trooper - as my previous posts on MN would show! However, there's a very big difference in bragging about "not holding back" and understanding that there may be situations where swearing isn't appropriate. I think it would be really inappropriate to be having a professional person visit your home - teacher, social worker, doctor, nurse - and be surrounded by sweary prints. I think I'd die a bit inside.

Do you remember those car stickers that everyone had in the 80s? They were quite the thing for a while. Often the ruder, the better. Really cringeworthy. These are the wall frame versions of those.

Dogs dressed up in military clothing, Victorian prints that have been bastardised - none of those are remotely "unique" or "eccentric". Look at Etsy and you'll find hundreds of the bloody things. They've been around in the crafting world for donkey's years and now are available as mass prints in shops.

I think your decor style is more mainstream than you realise, albeit a bit stuck in the past.

I'm sorry you haven't had many people agree with you and I'm sure it's hard to read. But you did say that you "don't hold back" so I imagine you appreciate honest and frank feedback.

All of that said, if you like the frames, put them up. It sounds like my household where very few outsiders visit so it's up to you. Make your home the environment that you enjoy, and that you think is appropriate for your DC. That's your choice, reagrdless of what other people might think.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 28/02/2025 14:52

Honestly, it's not even the swearwords for me, it's the sentiment. I wouldn't want my kid to walk past a sign saying "If you’re happy and you know it, it’s your meds!" every morning.

Though it is also sort of the swearwords. I'm horrifically pottymouthed but that doesn't mean I would want to see what I saw all over the walls!

*Edited to add that absent the swearwords, whilst "live love laugh" isn't my personal thing, it wouldn't occur to me to judge people who do like happy affirmative art on the wall.

Thepeopleversuswork · 28/02/2025 14:48

@Rainbows678

I didn’t say that, you’ve clearly misunderstood the whole conversation. I said it’s not odd to not have other children in the house because my child’s autism and doesn’t like being around other children - nothing to do with the quotes or prints.

You've had a very hard time on here (including from me) and maybe unjustifiably unkind in places.

The bottom line is you should decorate your house as you see fit and to hell with what other people think. It's up to you and no one else. But you did ask.

Those sorts of "statement of philosophy" things (live, laugh love etc) aren't offensive they just are tacky and dated and will make most people cringe on sight. Swearing: you will get wildly different answers on this: some people are incredibly allergic to it, other people couldn't care less.

The thing is either you care about this or you don't. Some people don't care at all and good luck to them. But if you do care then you may as well take the feedback on board.

I think that having those kinds of things is not eccentric - they are so common loads of people have them. And if you genuinely were eccentric it would never occur to you to care what anyone thought.

I have my house the way I like it. I am worried about people's judgement if it's a dirty mess so I keep it tidy enough (especially when I have visitors) but it doesn't have to be spotless. I don't care about their judgement of my plain white walls as I genuinely don't think it matters what they think. If you're questioning you're obviously not comfortable with it in some way.

WaitroseIsMySpiritualHome · 28/02/2025 14:46

Whatever your 'household style', the biggest problem with those prints is that they are trying hard to be funny, and failing. They are naff, a bit 2018, and too 'try hard' - all a but embarrassing really. And whether it's fair or not - you will be judged by them - not so much for the swearing as the tastelessness And that's what you asked - will I be judged? Yes. Yes you will.

Your next post about having Victorian Paintings of people with balloons/bubbles and your dog in military uniform, all sounds all very Etsy/Ink and Drop - and that's fine, but doesn't make you edgy - it's all pretty mainstream.

So on that basis, put up what you like, stop defending the prints and Live, Love, Laugh :)

MorrisZapp · 28/02/2025 14:46

Who does come into your house, whose judgement you care about?

HopelessHouseMaid · 28/02/2025 14:41

It’s your house, you put up what ever you like!! I wouldn’t judge you and it wouldn’t bother me if my children saw them. They hear worse at school.

whatapalarva · 28/02/2025 14:40

Personally, I am not a fan of sayings on walls. A bit like on desks where people have signs saying you don't have to be mad to work here, but it helps. Like live, laugh, love and all that. I think it lacks imagination and never funny imho. However, I wouldn't judge someone if they did but would wonder who its for. I only decorate my house how I like it for me, no one else as they only visit.

Namechangedforgoodreasons · 28/02/2025 14:35

It depends - would you care if your child then thinks that’s everyday language?

But irrespective of that, imo you’re trying too hard. The messages aren't eccentric, just ultra-naff and make me cringe. Yes, I would judge you. (Well, you did ask.)

Shoemadlady · 28/02/2025 14:35

Not appropriate for kids to see. What kind of a message does it send to them too?
