Would you judge this in someone’s house?

I’m currently re-decorating parts of my house. I’ve come across a website that sells prints for the walls and I’ve found some I really like;

This house is full of love, laughter, and a little bit of what the fuck.

Pardon the mess, I decided not to give a shit today.

If you’re happy and you know it, it’s your meds!

As you can probably tell, our house is already a little bit eccentric with its decor… but would you judge someone for having prints like that on the wall with children living in the house or am I just overthinking it? 😅

I'd think - why do you need to have that written on your walls? I wouldn't say anything I'd just think it was a bit dated and naff.

StElse · 28/02/2025 11:49

Well yes personally I would think they're naff, but it's your house

The thing is something eccentric means something that is individual to that person, or family. If it is a mass produced print churned out in a factory in China then it isn’t individual or original or eccentric at all , it is just something mass produced that has been thought up by someone else. All you have done is wasted good money paid for it and hung it up on your wall like 200,000 other eccentric free spirits.

If you want to be thought eccentric and original hang them upside down, or sideways, or turn them to the wall or write your own thoughts over them. Put your own imprint on them or find a silk screen printing course and make your own.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 28/02/2025 11:47

I judge you for not having the courage of your convictions and putting whatever the hell you like on your walls. And I'd probably question your sense of humour and taste if I visited.

I've got to ask though, do you really like that sort of thing? Some people might find them vaguely amusing for a nanosecond, but they're not the kind of wall decor that's going to give you pleasure when you look at them through the years, like a picture you love would. You don't get much bang for your buck with these 'Aren't I lovingly bonkers?' posters.

Spongebobpatrick · 28/02/2025 11:46

If you're happy and you know it.... that one made me smile. I'd probably put that in my office to make myself smile, but where nobody else could see it. The others - no.

WickWood · 28/02/2025 11:46

I wouldn't comment, but I'd think they're awfully tacky. Sorry but you did ask!

Cherry8809 · 28/02/2025 11:46

Pretty crass with kids in the house.
Pretty “try hard” too.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 28/02/2025 11:46

As a bit of a hoarder, I have much to be embarrassed about when it comes to house contents. So I would be forgiving of pretty much anything in another person's house, particularly if it made them happy.

We're all just a twinkle in time away from daubs on the walls of caves, anyway. So I say go for it. Just as long as you've got a nice cup of tea for me and some stories to tell when I visit.

MaryGreenhill · 28/02/2025 11:45

Vile tbh

HobbiddoH · 28/02/2025 11:44

I would be annoyed if I had a DC visiting your house who saw these.
But kids visiting or not, I would just find that very tacky in general.

GrantMitchell · 28/02/2025 11:44

I don’t get slogans on walls, who is the audience? Those who live there? Visitors? You can agree with a sentiment without needing it to be displayed on the wall.

The worst offender is “get naked” on bathmats. I’m forgetful, but even I have a 100% record of remembering to take my clothes off to shower without being prompted.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 28/02/2025 11:44

OP I see from another of your recent posts that you're currently in the midst of a mental health crisis, so I'm sorry to hear that.

Unfortunately, it's a no from me too on the wall slogans and I'm quite surprised about the one relating to meds, but I get that everyone deals with things differently.

ClearFruit · 28/02/2025 11:44

Absolutely awful.

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 28/02/2025 11:43

The best one I heard of - which would undoubtedly give half of MN the vapours - was a twee sign which said "Life's too short not to lick the bowl!", but somebody had moved it from the kitchen and propped it on the downstairs toilet!

When we bought our last house, there was stuff like this all over the walls.

And yes, it probably lowered my opinion of the previous owners. The frankly scary DIY electricals we discovered later lowered my opinion a great deal more mind.

GoldenLegend · 28/02/2025 11:42

Yes. It’s unbelievably naff. So are little signs saying ’Gin o’clock’ though.

i think you’d get tired of it very quickly tbh.

ColdLittleHeart · 28/02/2025 11:42

I mean if you have to come on here and ask people if they’d judge you, I’m guessing you care about how others view you, therefore you’re not eccentric. If you were you’d style your house in a way you like and give zero fucks what people might think

latetothefisting · 28/02/2025 11:41

pearbottomjeans · 28/02/2025 11:15

They’re all of the ‘I’m mad, me!’ / ‘You don’t have to be mad to work here, but it helps!’ ilk IMO. If judging = perceiving then yes I’d perceive you as a bit naff basically.

yeah this. I'd be more judge-y about the cringe factor than the swearing.

But it's your house - why decorate it for other people who will only visit occasionally? If you like them then get them. Do you judge other people's houses when they have decor that isn't to your taste or do you just accept that they have different taste to you? You don't think 'Oh I really liked Marianne but now I've seen she lives in a minimalist grey house I've gone right off her?!' Presumably most people who visit your home will know you anyway, so won't be shocked that you have a 'quirky' slogan or two up.

You could always put them up somewhere visitors are less likely to see - inside of a wardrobe, your bedroom, upstairs bathroom, etc. Or as a pp suggested, get the slogan on a mug instead.

RocketPanda · 28/02/2025 11:41

If you like them then crack on and get them. I have never walked into anyone's house and judged their decor. Sure there's things that aren't my taste but so what. I'm not going to jump to mad assumptions of someone being a try hard.
DD has an instagram of my house and it's interior. It gets lovely comments and some not so lovely comments. I don't care because they don't live here.

And honestly a couple of bad words do not delinquents make.

SockFluffInTheBath · 28/02/2025 11:40

Annettecurtaintwitcher · 28/02/2025 11:26

Wouldn’t bother me re: kids but think slogans on walls are cringy and naff not quirky and original.

This. They’re ok for memes, bit naff on your wall. If I saw these in someone’s house I would assume they’re the tiresome one in the group who likes to tell everyone they’re a bit mad and crazy.

viques · 28/02/2025 11:40

DappledThings · 28/02/2025 11:22

Eccentric isn't the vibe those give off at all. Just tacky and cringy.

This.

Anotherparkingthread · 28/02/2025 11:38

I hate that kind of tat. It's always hanging up in the house of somebody who thinks they are really zaney and like to mention that they have an odd sense of humour. 💀

SoMauveMonty · 28/02/2025 11:37

I love unusual/eclectic decor, the grey & white trend leaves me cold.
But words like fuck & shit aren't unusual or interesting, just a bit tedious really.

TorroFerney · 28/02/2025 11:37

I’m not sure that’s what eccentric means. Someone who has those words up is as far from eccentric as you can get.

AttentionDeficitAndSquirrel · 28/02/2025 11:36

I don't like sentimental prints but these would make me laugh or at least smile. I also think people just put up random stuff in their house without necessarily thinking too much about it so no I wouldn't judge or draw any deep conclusions.

I would maybe think it's inappropriate if your kids are very young, ie primary or younger. Especially the one about meds. If they are teenagers or in secondary then I guess you've got a much tougher and more judgmental audience at home than a bunch of mumsnetters anyway. If your kids don't think it's cringe I'd bow to their judgment.
