To wish Starmer would make a unilateral decision to rejoin the EU?

That’s all, really. Yes it would be ‘undemocratic’ but should we sacrifice national interest on the altar of a vote from 10 years ago that everyone seems to regret?

We feel adrift during a scary time, and the US has all but ghosted us.

@PoliteTaupeLeader

So there was 41 years between the last referendums.

That does mean much more of a change in the demographic than just nine years when some of those who voted remain are still
sulking and want a second chance to vote the same way.

Biscuitsnotcookies · 27/02/2025 21:43

The referendums are designed to be at least generational and ideally a life time in order for the full picture to emerge which can take many decades. It’s not an election (in and out of the EU) Referendums are binding.
I am not sure you have grasped the legalities. It would be unsustainable to have a referendum every ten years clearly and unaffordable.

Edited

Agreed, I'd have no issue if there was enough strength of feeling after a generation to consider another referendum. So say 2050 ish if a generation is roughly 25 years. Certainly not just five years after we officially left.

Biscuitsnotcookies · 27/02/2025 21:45

And yes 2016 was the only referendum on leaving the EU - the other one was about joining the customs union 50 odd years ago, clearly a customs union is a completely different prospect at the time. The EU evolved over time.

bombastix · 27/02/2025 21:43

Oh no, Starmer won't do that. It looks a lot more likely we are having a fast trade deal with the US.

The EU will take forever to negotiate. Their public positions are all things Starmer could never agree to.

The US offers tech business, which we and Europe don't have.

I voted Remain. But don't tell yourself the EU looks like a winning ticket. It's in huge trouble. The UK seems to have made a significant decision today.

PoliteTaupeLeader · 27/02/2025 21:40

Forgive me if I'm wrong but 2016 wasn't the first referendum on Brexit?

So why couldn't there be another one 10 years after the last?

Personally, as an EU citizen living here I don't think I could stomach another one. But I can't see that there is anything at all undemocratic about changing your mind as a demographic changes.

When did we actually officially leave after all the undemocratic court appeals from sore losers?

But then what?
Best out of three? Best out of five?
How far do we take this?

Get over it. Remain lost.

(FWIW I voted remain, I wouldn't do so again though)

Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock. Best of three.😂

SleepToad · 27/02/2025 21:36

Yep, 6 whole weeks since the last remoaner.

How did you personally benefit from being a member of the eu?
Did you buy any products like holidays from a eu based company not based in the uk?
Did you go on holiday for more than 90 days/work.abroad (yes if you were wealthy)?
Did you get to legally watch eu countries broadcasts of English football?
Did British companies easily expand into Europe?

The above will all be a no.

Did the uk.pay more per capita that every other country.?
Was British beef banned for many years without justification?
Were British wages suppressed for years because of a completely elastic supply of Labour?
Is Germany struggling financially because of the eu?
Are billions wasted every 6 months moving it's hq, just to keep the French happy?
Did the common agricultural policy distort farming and food prices to the extent that good food was thrown away for decades and now farmers are paid not to farm?

The above will be a yes.

But let's not revisit the referendum. Let's wait and see what happens to the eu over the next 12months as currently it is not serving the member countries or their citizens.

Gongpostal · 27/02/2025 21:36

Absolutely not! As others have said we live in a democracy. Just because he's PM at the moment (hopefully not for long) he does not get an unchallenged want without serious negotiation and public support (which he personally is unlikely to get) I and most people I know voted leave and absolutely would do again, I know a few that voted remain and most of them haven't noticed any difference since we have left.

What the actual fuck did I just read? This deeply unpopular government are already shitting on us enough without going back on a democratic vote. What is wrong with people to ask such ridiculous questions?

anyway we’re not right-wing enough for Europe sweetcheeks. The authoritarian left love to be told what to fucking do by the “government”. I put that in inverted commas as we appear to have a bunch of student union politics debating society types who’ve never had a proper fucking job or run a business, god help us all.

PoliteTaupeLeader · 27/02/2025 21:34

No, OP I wouldn't support that. Brexit means Brexit or some nonsense.

You have to give the people what they want or they'll want something worse. And it will look like that pint swilling frog face of a fuckheadFarage.

I actually think if it was possible an overwhelming amount of people would vote for Trump in this country.

The world is going to shit and I've chosen a terrible time to give up drinking.

PoliteTaupeLeader · 27/02/2025 21:31

taxguru · 27/02/2025 19:30

I agree. And had Blair actually restricted the free movement from Eastern Europe in the noughties (as most other major EU countries did), then we'd probably never have had Brexit.

Ah bit of a nostalgic thread, not seen any bitching about Eastern Europeans for nearly 10 years now! You've all been so preoccupied with Muslims since Brexit.

Did all the Eastern Europeans go home or did you realize that you weren't actually kicking out the brown people with Brexit?

Wildflowers99 · 27/02/2025 21:31

IdaGlossop · 27/02/2025 21:04

Think it through, OP, using all the arguments you've been given here. You can 'feel' all you like that an undemocratic attempt to return to a union that may not even want us, two weeks into a new world order, is a good idea but I'd keep it to yourself if you have any sense because you're going to look very foolish if you persist.

‘Keep it to myself’? 😂😂

OP posts:
Jumpingthruhoops · 27/02/2025 21:30

Yes, YABVU. The vote was remain or leave; rightly or wrongly, leave won.

As I understand it, people don't 'regret it'; what they regret is voting for something that 'those in charge' have made a pig's ear of actioning.

I would certainly welcome another referendum.

If there was one in the next few weeks, which way do you think it would go?

Well if you get another referendum, I want to have a referendum on the outcome of it. 😀

@BatchCookBabe this thread is in its infancy and I'm sure the eu lovers will be on soon when they get over trump love in with starmer.

EU lover here - did you watch Macron and Trump? Also a love-in - it's basic diplomacy. I am not sure why you think we have anything to get over. No-one was expecting Starmer to go over and publicly humiliate Trump - we don't live in Love Actually.

ImJustFineTYVM · 27/02/2025 21:26

I would give anything to return to the EU but YABU because democracy. If you need a referendum to leave, you need one to rejoin.

Some of the anti EU comments above are laughable - I don't even rise to the bait anymore. But both UK and the EU were stronger together and that is absolutely evident with the new regime in the USA.

Chickoletta · 27/02/2025 21:24

Hopefully he is learning that his job is to do what majority of the population want. The party politics game of doing the opposite of each other is why so little changes.

His job is to keep the population safe and to deliver on his party's manifesto commitments. People got the chance to say what they wanted on 4 July.

Biscuitsnotcookies · 27/02/2025 21:20

Can you imagine rejoining and FOM restarts? We are already knee deep in a severe housing crisis, the nhs is already collapsing slowly it would be the final straw. People
just do not consider the implications and consequences in any detail.
