To wish Starmer would make a unilateral decision to rejoin the EU?

That’s all, really. Yes it would be ‘undemocratic’ but should we sacrifice national interest on the altar of a vote from 10 years ago that everyone seems to regret?

We feel adrift during a scary time, and the US has all but ghosted us.

Like if the EU is gaging to have the UK back. Typical sense of entitlement and superiority of the British people.

There is, supported by polling agencies. Many available online. Average believing it was a mistake is around 55 %.

Can EU citizens in the UK sign up to these polling agencies?

No idea. Sure it’s easy enough to find out if you’re interested.

Does one sign up to polling agencies? The only times we have contributed to polls over the years, the agencies have contacted us.

Actually I did sign up to YouGov some months ago to check - they didn't ask for my nationality/citizenship. I didn't take it any further than the initial sign-up.

One in six Leave voters (18%) now say that it was wrong for Britain to choose to leave the EU, although 66% still say Britain made the right decision. By contrast, just 7% of Remainers now think it was right for the UK to leave, compared to 88% who still think a vote for Brexit was wrong.

Additionally, among the youngest Britons, who were unable to vote in the 2016 referendum, there is little belief that the referendum went the right way. Three-quarters of 18-24 year olds (75%) say that Britain was wrong to vote to leave the EU, against just one in ten (10%) who say the UK made the right choice.

Interesting though that 'If there was a referendum now on whether the UK should or should not join the European Union' - 'only' 80% of 2016 remain voters would vote in favour of joining the EU and 17% of leave voters. Also, 5% of remain voters would support further loosening of ties with the EU than we have now.

The title in your link says how do Britons feel about Brexit five-years on but the data tables say 'Adults in GB' - clearly the respondents are not all Britons. How do we know whether 5% of respondents are not entitled to vote in a UK referendum?

No he absolutely should not. People who want to live in an autocratic dictatorship should move to one.

The rest of Europe are turning against the EU so it would be a bit silly at this point! Many European countries have euro sceptic governments. It’s not exactly a rip roaring success is it! 😂

I think the problem is more that it has a few pro Russian governments. I don't think the EU understands how to handle that. The obvious way involves breaking a lot of its long held principles. But if the EU wants to survive, it cannot have pro Russian governments. The security of EU countries depends on that.

You can also see that a strong Europe with a common currency is a problem for the US and its reserve currency.

The EU has enormous potential power. But it must break out of the idea that Russia is friendly and you can do business with Russia without cost. In fact the cost is going to be huge.

I just think this is totally fake and probably supported by some EU think tank. I know many brexiteers and all express relief to be out

Fake?! Oh, ok, I see, now.

I don’t suspect that YouGov is an EU think tank. Neither are the other independent, UK polling agencies who regularly poll very similar results.
. Your use of the word “fake” tells me all I need to know about you, though.

Your anecdote is meaningless, as is my knowing Brexiteers who now regret their vote and not a single person who voted to remain who has changed their mind.

You do you, though, in your happy little world.

While most people who supported Brexit haven't changed their minds (yet), polling suggests a significant minority have. YouGov reports one in five leave voters (20%) would now support rejoining the EU itself and about one in three (32%) would support rejoining the single market. https://yougov.co.uk/politics/articles/51484-how-do-britons-feel-about-brexit-five-years-on

Equally though on those questions, 'only' 83% of 2016 remain voters support rejoining the EU itself and 74% support rejoining the single market.

Nope we voted to leave and we should stay left.

ChrisS36 · 01/03/2025 17:12

Without a referendum what would stop the Conservatives simply pledging to leave again if re-elected?

That would be brilliant (and lose Starmer the next election with no doubt whatsoever

Unlikely. There’s an awful lot of Brexit regret from yes voters.

No there really isn’t despite what remainers think, and you are overlooking the number of remainers that have since changed their minds after watching the EU pantomime in full flow for the last ten years.
