To wish Starmer would make a unilateral decision to rejoin the EU?

That’s all, really. Yes it would be ‘undemocratic’ but should we sacrifice national interest on the altar of a vote from 10 years ago that everyone seems to regret?

We feel adrift during a scary time, and the US has all but ghosted us.

I'd rather Starmer realise that FAR FAR FAR more people DIDN'T vote for him than did and completely reform the way government is chosen in this country.

Will he do that? Doubt it, he wouldn't be in power now if it wasn't for the system that got him there.

If we had a different system our whole political history would be different based on different voting over the years.

Don't think it's really democratic to dislike a system when it doesn't work on your favour!

We fucked up by leaving the EU. I think most people didn't understand what they were voting for.
Normally I'd be against unilaterally rejoining because that makes a mockery of democracy. But if we were moving into a situation of real global threat - with America gone rogue and Russia threatening - we might need to

This. I believe the UK would be welcomed back with the bare minimum of bureaucracy. We’ve a great deal to bring to the table in this very unstable world.

The people I know in real life barely mention Brexit - they've just carried on their lives as before.

I can pretty much guarantee that a percentage don’t want to mention it because it’s been a disaster. Very embarrassing to admit you were duped.

I wonder if people not wanting to rejoin the EU think even a ruined economy, striping away of rights and opportunities and becoming an international laughing stock is better than listening to the whinging of Leave voters?
Oh, Leavers haven't even shut up whinging though, you'd think they'd all be too busy enjoying their sunlit uplands to continue moaning and lying about Brexit.

I completely agree with you. The world’s changed more and faster in the last few months than in the rest of my seven decade lifetime.

This is my logic. No, the EU isn’t perfect - it’s a bit neoliberal for my tastes and I’m sure the waste was high.

But we urgently need allies, and the US has made it very plain that it sees us, and the other Europeans, as ungrateful leeches.

Of course we can be allies without the EU but I think stronger ties, and a removal of unnecessary barriers, can only be a positive at this point. Frankly in my dream world we rejoin and it is mandated every country has to spend a minimum of 3% on defence, but that of course will not happen.

We’ve become the loner in the playground. Ditched our mates for the popular kids and now they’ve rejected us.

That's entirely hypothetical since we'll never be allowed to rejoin.

I’m not so sure that’s case now,
MissScarletInTheBallroom, with the weird new world order. Our armed services and nuclear deterrent would be a strong reason for the European nation’s voting in favour.

Yes, but it would need a unanimous yes from the EU27, including referendums in several of those countries. It wouldn't necessarily be heads of state or national parliaments or Brussels bureaucrats who got the casting vote. It could be voters in rural France

I suspect that even those rural French voters are pretty unnerved by Putin and Trump’s antics. I believe they have the internet or at least television 😁

It would be foolish in the extreme to even contemplate a second referendum before ascertaining that the EU would accept the UK back

With the new world order, I think admitting the UK, with its armed services and nuclear deterrent, is a far more attractive proposition to the EU than it was 6 months ago (when I would have agreed with you entirely).
Ascertaining a yes or no would not be difficult. Times are changing and things need to move fast to keep up with those shifts.

They do ask for it if it's relevant to the survey

Do EU citizens in the UK not have an opinion on whether it was right or wrong to leave the EU?

Actually I did sign up to YouGov some months ago to check - they didn't ask for my nationality/citizenship. I didn't take it any further than the initial sign-up.

So why ask me if you already knew? 😁

I can’t imagine many EU citizens care enough about the UK’s status to bother doing that.

I wasn't suggesting they signed up for any particular set of questions.

I really do believe that in many cases that it’s a pride thing, Kendodd.

No one likes to admit that they fell for all of the reprehensible lies and nasty rhetoric.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 01/03/2025 18:49

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/03/2025 18:39

Indeed, @HoppityBun. So, let’s have another referendum and let democracy take its course.

The problem is that the UK could vote yes and the EU could vote no.

Kendodd · 01/03/2025 18:45

Clavinova · 01/03/2025 17:49

Interesting though that 'If there was a referendum now on whether the UK should or should not join the European Union' - 'only' 80% of 2016 remain voters would vote in favour of joining the EU and 17% of leave voters. Also, 5% of remain voters would support further loosening of ties with the EU than we have now.

I wonder if people not wanting to rejoin the EU think even a ruined economy, striping away of rights and opportunities and becoming an international laughing stock is better than listening to the whinging of Leave voters?

I have seen you post misinformation like the 350 bn dollar lie on several threads. Can't help to wonder what you're intentions are

It was the use of “fake” and “EU think tanks” in respect of perfectly legitimate UK polling agencies that told me what this poster is all about.

HoppityBun · 01/03/2025 18:36

a. We live in a parliamentary democracy, as the Supreme Court had to remind Boris Johnson
b. We don’t “just rejoin” the Eu, it takes years of negotiations
c. Why would they have us back?
d. We are seeing in the US what a disaster Presidential government is. We don’t want that here
e. The divisions caused by Brexit have not healed, attempting to rejoin without public agreement would cause interminable rifts and prove Vance/Trump right that people aren’t being listened to

I could list many more reasons

If you don't believe in the polling numbers( which are corroborate by several agencies) why not post opposing sources instead of "my friends think so".

But it's also easily explained by the fact that we'd never get back in on the same terms we had before. We had literally the best deal of any country in the EU and yet Brexiters wouldn't stop moaning (ironically).

bombastix · 01/03/2025 17:58

Neither side wants it. And politically you can see that the security of the UK is probably better off. I don't think the EU is set up to handle pro Russia governments
