To wish Starmer would make a unilateral decision to rejoin the EU?

That’s all, really. Yes it would be ‘undemocratic’ but should we sacrifice national interest on the altar of a vote from 10 years ago that everyone seems to regret?

We feel adrift during a scary time, and the US has all but ghosted us.

63% of the population would now vote to rejoin. 🙂

The YouGov poll linked to up thread claims 51% of respondents would vote in favour of joining the EU if there was a referendum held now.

MrsSkylerWhite
I can pretty much guarantee that a percentage don’t want to mention it because it’s been a disaster

I can pretty much guarantee that anyone who thinks Brexit is a 'disaster' would want to mention it. Or were you being hyperbolic? Hardly anyone posts on the dedicated Brexit board on Mumsnet now - surely there would be more interest if Brexit was a 'disaster'?

Very embarrassing to admit you were duped

Well, I certainly remember the head of the Remain campaign saying in 2021 that the economic dangers of Brexit were exaggerated by his camp and the strategy didn't work. I felt a bit duped that I was told house prices might fall 18% and there would be an instant recession if leave won - I very nearly voted remain on the strength of it.

They aren’t likely to tell you, are they? (given the very anti-EU opinions you have been expressing on this forum for years. Can only imagine that you’re equally blinkered and strident face to face.

You are not a very good judge of character if you think I am a forceful or intimidating person. Neither do I think I am blinkered. I don't impose my political views on anyone - in fact I am very approachable face to face and I get on with everyone in real life. Do you think everyone who disagrees with you is blinkered?

Young friends and family are [having a miserable life] because their freedoms and options have been severely curtailed.
If you don’t feel that’s a cause for regret, I can only assume that you’re a comfortable retiree too, without young people you care about.

Emotional blackmail now - and you accused me of being difficult to converse with. I am not a retiree and I have two young people I care about (more in our wider family) - ds1 graduated last summer and ds2 is in the lower sixth.

All of the young people I know (under 35) studied for their undergraduate degrees in the UK, the US or Ireland. A few opted for a year in Europe (EU) as part of their degree - including post Brexit. It must be quite difficult for English speaking graduates to get a graduate-level trainee job in the EU if they are not bilingual - regardless of Brexit. Indeed, the Irish young people I know have moved to London and Sydney, not elsewhere in the EU.

The recent trade deals with Australia and New Zealand extended the youth mobility schemes we had with those countries and raised the age limit by 5 years - that is clearly a benefit for our young people. Although, if it makes you feel any better, I fully expect Keir Starmer to capitulate on a youth mobility deal with the EU. It remains to be seen if our young people in the UK will be disadvantaged by such a scheme with increased competition for jobs - a number of parents expressed that concern on LBC last week.

Sorry, I thought it read 63% would vote Reform!

BoredZelda · 03/03/2025 19:47

I agree. It would solve so many problems, and he has the political capital to do it.

However, it would only bolster Reform which would be catastrophic for the U.K.

nonsense

In what way?

Mix56 · 03/03/2025 17:52

What makes you think the EU would accept the British back in?

The US withdrawing defence funding.

Mix56 · 03/03/2025 17:52

What makes you think the EU would accept the British back in?

Barbadossunset · 03/03/2025 17:52

Thats assuming the EU would take the UK, back, of course.

@MrsSkylerWhite Some pp have said they won’t - I don’t whether that is true or not.
However Best for Britain has been fund-raising to rejoin - having received from George Soros’s Open Society Foundation nearly quarter of a million pounds as well other large donations - so why would they continue with this if there is no chance of rejoining?

What will piss Germans off even more is that for a number of French citizens they can retire at 62/63 depending on when they started working. Imagine being a German woker at aged 65 to 67 knowing some of your tax is going to Countries where you would be retired if you lived there.

nonsense

I don't know anyone who regrets voting Leave, they would all 100% vote Leave again. Loads of them love Trump as well.
Well, actually I do know a couple of people who regret voting Leave, but they regretted it immediately after the vote and didn't really want to leave in the first place.

roast beefs from the slums no doubt....

Fortunately I also don’t live in America.

America wanted trump.

Uk wanted Brexit.

half did. the old, white/english half in both cases

There are rumors that France will have to bailed out soon which will probably cause riots in Germany as they will have to pay for it.

from where do you get your 'information'? GB News? Youtube?

Verv · 03/03/2025 17:44

YANBU.
Either go back because its economically sensible, or have another vote.

HamptonPlace · 03/03/2025 17:43

Biscuitsnotcookies · 27/02/2025 19:42

I don’t think we are going to be served to any country on a ‘silver platter’ what I do think however is Trump quite rightly wants countries like Germany and others in the EU to pay their fair share towards NATO, which they have never done to date.
So he is playing hardball and quite frankly why should the US pay for Europe’s security?

because it's fundamentally in their interest? it's not been happening for 80 years for no (american) reason. Remember the Marshall plan?

HamptonPlace · 03/03/2025 17:41

Azureal · 27/02/2025 19:37

Absolutely not. That would be a very slippery slope.

I'm British but was studying abroad in Paris in 2005 when the French voted no to the treaty on a European constitution (and were told they voted wrong and to vote again). I vividly remember walking in the day after to university and hearing all my peers complain that they should never have let 'the people' vote because they are too stupid.

It shaped my political views and my views on the EU who thought they could tell countries to vote again if they 'got it wrong'. It's part of the reason why I voted Leave and would again.

I'm sure you'll think I voted Leave because I'm a bigot or anti-immigrant or I believed a bunch of lies on a bus. But I'm none of those things.

I didn't vote for Starmer but I accept the public vote. The same should apply to Brexit.

but most people are uninformed or ill informed, that's just human nature. I know this is breaking Godwin's Law, but hitler was voted in democratically...

HamptonPlace · 03/03/2025 17:35

Biscuitsnotcookies · 27/02/2025 19:34

Of all the things to suggest op this is harebrained to say the least. The country would descend into chaos and riots overnight, Starmer and the Labour government would fold. We would cease to be a democracy and we would have years, if not decades of unrest and a guaranteed far right Government!

This might be worth it if rejoining was genuinely a solution, but the EU is massively struggling both economically, politically and most of the countries are voting the other way and want less Europe not more. In what universe would it help us to go backwards.

I wonder who these posters are and their intentions, because it feels like it is definitely NOT in the best interests of the UK or even the West.

Labour agrees with Brexit. People who voted for Labour are in agreement with Brexit. They won the election.

do they though? Those who think about? Do all the republican politicians actually think Trump is not insane. No, neither is true. All economic, business and cultural leaders etc.. in 2016 thought brexit a mad idea. The marginal result (punishing a tory party for insane anti-keynesian austerity) does not undo the fact that those who have thought deeply about it, and have vested interests have changed their analysis. A vote result does not fundamental economic and international interests, change. (p.s. don't know any leave voters as live in a relatively prosperous part of the UK..)

HamptonPlace · 03/03/2025 17:24

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 27/02/2025 19:08

YABU I don't know anyone who voted leave who regrets the decision. I'd expect full scale riots if he even attempted anything of the like. He and his party are hugely disliked, especially amongst the sterotype population who voted leave. Making that kind of decision would be disaster.

America may have ghosted us because of our current goverment who have been fairly obvious in their opinions of the new American President.

stereotypical population? you mean the half the population (less know as they have been dying off in droves) who voted leave a decade a go?

Tucked up my retirement. Property In Europe I couldn't go to when I wanted. Sold now.
I'd still like to know why Europeans can come to the UK for 6 months but we can only go for 90/180 days.

Because we don't behave like a spurned lover, but the EU does.

If a club feels the need to punish members who leave, it probably wasn't a great club in the first place.

Forget the pointless bureaucracy of EU institutions. Stick with NATO.

BMW6 · 02/03/2025 08:42

Wildflowers99 · 01/03/2025 22:24

I agree (sorry to keep reposting your replies this evening), we have effectively been ghosted and we must now proceed with the EU in shoring up our militaries and donating as much as possible to help Ukraine.

Unless we make some dramatic shifts to accommodate this, the bloody ‘minerals deal’ will go ahead and Ukraine will be torn apart by Russia and the US either in competition or together.

But there is absolutely no reason why we couldn't (or shouldn't) work with the EU to stand against Putin. Membership of the EU isn't a requirement for being allied is it!

It's often discussed on Mumsnet - in fact I've just checked and there was a discussion on the Brexit threads two weeks ago. A remain poster has posted duff information although she doesn't realise it.

Lots of nonsense is discussed on Mumsnet.
