To despise the word 'comfy'?

Urggggggh. I don't know why, but I hate it.

I personally will abide a bit of discomfort for aesthetic reasons, but would never look askance at those who choose comfort over fashion.

I just have a, possibly unreasonable, hatred of the word.

Averse to 'making memories' and 'my little family'.

Agree. Loathe those, along with:
“this one” (whilst pointing to the mate in the photo) evokes rage in me.
Plus I cannot BEAR the word “sustenance”. I wouldn’t use it and hate hearing it anywhere.

and an upgrade to 'hotty choccy' could cause you to stab yourself, too?

I agree to most of the words discussed here, inc. tummy, smellies, veggies, plus the word horrid. No one, apart from a character from an Enid Blyton school series, should use the word 'horrid'.

Funnily enough, I find choc more annoying than choccy. No idea why!

If someone uttered the sentence "Comfy in my jimjams with a toasty cup of hot choc" I would have to stab them with a fork.

I don’t mind "comfy" but can’t bear the infantile "prezzie".

"Loungewear" is a marketing ploy to get people to think that they need to buy an additional range of clothes to wear at home that aren't normal clothes like jeans etc but that also aren't pyjamas. I don't know at what point people became convinced that any clothes other than elasticated tracksuit bottoms are uncomfortable, it's not as though it's a binary choice between that and a ballgown!

Loungewear is inextricably linked with lock down for me, which is probably why I don't like the word. That and "pause", which I also detest.

Please can we add 'yummy' to this list? 😬

... and 'yum' and 'nom' or, worse, 'nom nom'. Eurghh...

Yes that's true. The ones in the comment which sparked the non-U comment were yummy, toasty, jammies, scrummy, bubbly, brekkie, tummy.. I can see my posher friends saying all of these except for toasty maybe.

Agree, I wouldn't classify any of those as non-U (hun is, though). Someone upthread mentioned brekker as an alternative to brekkie - that's old fashioned public school slang. You'd sleep in a bedder, have brekker in the morning, buy stationery etc at the booker and after rugger practice maybe get a snack at the grubber. I'm sure there are others but I can't think of them atm!

Hortus · 28/02/2025 19:03

Depends which abbreviations you're talking about. Many of the ones discussed on this thread are ones used by women who call other people "hun", that's definitely a lower class marker.

My pet hates as well as comfy are hubby, the hubster ,kiddos , and tasty!

Don't agree at all, it's the poshest people I know who use the most ridiculous abbreviations. And words like scrummy I only hear in my head in a posh accent.. Maybe not holibobs though.

It doesn't annoy me, but at the same time I don't know why 'comfortable' gets its own abbreviation when other comparable adjectives don't. What's special about the concept of 'comfortable' that it needs a shortened version?

Oddly, 'veggie', as referenced above by @Lovageandgeraniums, really grates on me. I also hate it when people say 'roasties' and 'Yorkies' for roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. Oh and when people describe themselves as a 'foodie'. And when tennis commentators call left-handed players 'lefties'.

I appreciate this is very much my problem and not theirs, though. I make no claims to rationality over this.

Because it’s just so long to say, lol. Too many letters to pronounce and everyone is just too tired.

ClippyMuldoon · 28/02/2025 18:57

Crichel · 28/02/2025 15:35

It’s certainly a non-U class marker.

Quite. What would Mummy think?

FFS. 😂

I agree.

Also yummy, toasty, jammies, scrummy, bubbly, brekkie, tummy...

Basically any kind of baby-type talk.

I just think it makes the person sound really infantile and common.

Edited

It’s certainly a non-U class marker.

PinedApple · 28/02/2025 14:25

I agree with much of this (although comfy is fine to me) but I wonder why. It conjures up an image of grown women trying to be twee and cute like children maybe. Infantilising??

I think poorly is just a twee way of saying 'ill'. Could range from a cold to something more serious! Definitely heard it used more by professionals in recent years though. Just say ill or unwell!

ElliesNextNameChange · 28/02/2025 10:26

I hate poorly too. Especially when used be health professionals. Part of this irrational hatred is that I've seen it used to describe everything from a minor cold to imminent death. What does it mean?!!

Thepeopleversuswork · 28/02/2025 10:15

"My little family" is the most hateful phrase ever. Smug, twee and insular.

Careful not to stab them in the tummy, though, that might make them poorly sick. Their gorjus hubby might need to make them a plate of picky bits and a cuppa to make them feel better. Then they can snuggle up under a cosy fluffy blanket and plan some holibobs with "this one", their little man and the rest of the famalam #blessed #makingmemories.

I think I need to stop typing before I puke...

Firebird83 · 28/02/2025 09:46

MIL calls tomatoes “toms” and jacket potatoes “jack pots” 🤮

ClippyMuldoon · 28/02/2025 08:58

A grown woman talking about her yummy hot choc and comfy jammies and snuggly blankie is not at all acceptable. As for yoga? No. I self- medicate my rage and soothe my injured smug superiority with wine and LIGHTHEARTED threads.

Which reminds me, wine o'clock. Also awful.

All cosy and toasty, snuggled up to hubby. Bliss.

Sharptonguedwoman · 28/02/2025 09:43

Lovageandgeraniums · 27/02/2025 17:21

I hate it too. Horrible cosy laziness. I also hate 'veggie'.

Please can we add 'yummy' to this list? 😬

Loloj · 28/02/2025 09:41

People (adults) using the word “littler” instead of “smaller” in a sentence. E.g. “Oh look that cat is littler than the other cat”. Ugh makes me want to pull my ears off.
