Woman 19 dies in dog attack in Bristol

Apologies if there’s already a thread on this, but how many more lives have to be taken in these horrific attacks before the Government admit that the current measures are failing. It surely has come to the point now that all XL Bullies should be euthanised.

I’m just visiting from Gransnet but I think these letters are moving far away from the original point and becoming vaguely tetchy .

I would say the overall conclusion is that there are many people in society who find dog’s present elevation distasteful and, sometimes, threatening . Dog owners should therefore consider this and rein ( quite literally ) their dogs in .
They should also consider the hygiene hazard of dogs in eating places etc .
Someone pointed out that many hostelries are more than willing to accommodate dogs but it’s Hobsen’s Choice for them ; their custom would be greatly diminished without the owners . When I’m having a meal or a drink I don’t want look at a dog’s bottom or to have to speak above a cacophony of barking . Many people feel like this . Sheep with lambs also feel like this.
So back to Gransnet , hoping that I don’t end my days being set upon by a bully dog or even by tripping over the extended lead of a Yorkshire terrier .

Food places that allow dogs still have 5 star hygiene ratings. You thinking it is disgusting is a problem you have personally. In terms of actual hygiene and food, it is fine.
I am not sure how my dog led on the floor next to me is having an hygiene impact on someone eating several metres away from us.

It will if, as i have seen happen more than once, a waitress goes over, makes a fuss of the dog, strokes its head and even its nose ! then goes straight over to the servery and picks up cutlery and plates of food. I have not been back to the two places where I have seen this happen. If their hygiene standards are so lax out front, what will they be like in the kitchen? Then there are places that let dogs sit on seats... Ugh!

nope, just no point,
if people can't see that it's pretty disgusting to have dogs in a food establishment then they obviously have much much lower standards than i do ( and I'm reasonably lax with most things).

I rest my case then

Yep, it is just "waa waa, I hate dogs and don't want to see them". Just pure entitled behaviour.

You literally didn’t read any of the rest of my post did you?

Why do YOUR wants take precedence over the dog owner’s wants (who is also a human, by the way)

I don't think it's entitlement to think that a human takes precedence over another species.

It is extremely arrogant to think that humans are more important than other species- including trees and plants-
Humans are a blight on the World- no other species has caused such awful damage to the 🌏 planet.
As a species we have ruined it.

No other animal comes close.

Mightymoog · 04/03/2025 11:25

Yes my wants as a hunan take precedence over another species.
To prioritise another species over your own is very very weird

That isn’t what you said though.
You said “MY wants should take precedence”

Why are your wants more important than mine? Someone who doesn’t own a dog but loves being around them.
Or why should your wants take precedence over the dog owner’s wants? Or the business owner’s wants?
It isn’t the Dog that’s getting the benefit of being in a cafe, most good dogs would be happy wherever as long as they’re with their owner. It’s other humans that benefit from this.

If I had a cafe and I knew that I could get extra custom by allowing dogs, but I may lose the odd one or two that doesn’t life them, I would take it. I can guarantee you that there are more people that love dogs or, at least, don’t mind either way than there are people who hold your opinion

I don't think it's entitlement to think that a human takes precedence over another species.

It is entitled to insist dogs are not in a place where the business owner has decided they are very welcome.

And it is humans deciding they take precedence over all other species is why this planet is in the state it is. Hell, we have humans deciding they take precedence other humans, hence why we are possibly facing war.
Humans are the problem, not dogs.

my wants should trump those of a pet from another species

And there we have it. Pure entitlement. The whole world should mould itself around you.

YeOldeGreyhound · 03/03/2025 22:02

Thanks @Errors, that was what I was trying to get at, albeit in a rather clunky way.
And yep, it would be pretty entitled of me to go to a soft play and moan about kids being there. But it is ok for people who don't like dogs to do their equivalent.

@YeOldeGreyhound you can’t equate the two though - mother’s baby is her literal human child that she grew for 9 months and birthed; it is her DNA, part of her and so any comment on the baby is a comment on her and her baby’s father. The baby will, all things being equal, go onto live 80 years and contribute to society as a full person. If that baby died young, the parents would never get over it.

A dog has been purchased (or adopted), it is an animal and will last 6-12 years before the wonder inevitably gets another two weeks later. It’s just not the same and it’s insulting to suggest it is.

I think you missed @YeOldeGreyhound ’s point.

She has her reasons why she doesn’t like babies, and to her they are as logical as the reasons you don’t like dogs (btw, I have a child myself so I don’t take offence at the comparison)

She is simply saying that her dislike of babies is her problem and wouldn’t dream of calling mothers disgusting or saying that it’s unhygienic to have a baby in a place where food is served, nor is she saying they shouldn’t be allowed in public places. But I may hazard a guess that she wouldn’t choose to head down to her local soft play for a coffee. Fair enough really.

The point is, we all dislike what we dislike and we will all probably try and avoid what we dislike whilst simultaneously not going around saying what we dislike should be banned.

I obviously don’t include XLB in that, completely different scenario

If a cafe allows dogs, then you are being very entitled to expect people to not take their dogs there. You are expecting everyone to cater to your wants.
Loads of places do not allow them. Go to those places instead.

No, I am making the similarity between things that we might dislike. I said babies, but I also could have said something else that is a common sight.
My dog brings me comfort, and is the reason I am still here. Yet some posters feel it is fine take pity on me, and say my dog is "vermin" etc. By the way, my dog does not stink or slobber. She doesn't even bark.
Some people do not like dogs, and that is fine. But they often go on to hate people with dogs too, and that is what I take issue with.

And it took my mum about 5 years between losing her dog, and getting another. Pet loss can run very deep.

Clicked on this to see if it had descended into the usual bullshit slinging competition and yup, not disappointed! 😅

Only XL bully sympathisers would resort to bringing up the most absurd points to try and justify something that is about as sensible as jumping off a cliff purely to see if you can fly. These people are so predictable.

These dogs are only a recent fad. A fashion, just like any other fashion except this latest obsession has proved itself to be a danger to people and other animals. Common sense would suggest this was probably a bad idea and we ought to wind this little bit of fun up and consign it to the history books.

There are plenty of other dog breeds to choose from that quite simply don't pose as much risk. You simply cannot argue otherwise. The stats speak for themselves.

You know we all have brains, you don't have to point out that cows have killed people. So has cow shit (slurry) which is a proper shit way to die. But slurry serves a purpose, it does a very valuable job and has done for a long time, it doesn't give us any street cred though, we don't expect everyone else to love and embrace our slurry, we don't think we're harder than you because we own slurry and you don't, we don't have teenagers or bored little men that parade our slurry round the streets threatening people with it, we aren't stupid enough to think slurry is cute, or after a day scaring the shit out of people, go home and take nice videos of it to upload to tiktok to prove it's cute and safe. We keep our slurry away from other people's kids and animals, in fact we warn them off going anywhere near our slurry, ultimately we don't patronise people by suggesting it is perfectly safe and everyone should have a pit of the stuff.

You're missing the point entirely, your very misguided, ill educated desire to own what is PROVEN to be a dangerous, simply as a pet, should NEVER EVER trump the rights of anyone to simply feel safe, let alone be safe. It is so incredibly selfish and cruel to society and to the dogs themselves that never asked to be born. The risk is simply too great with these dogs. Why do it?

Same. And we avoid it. An indoors place that allows dogs is not somewhere I want to be. They repulse me, with their floppy slobbery tongues and panting and stench.
I feel so fed up of seeing them. Probably the way most dog owners would feel if they saw a giant rat. Yet my feelings towards dogs are mocked, whilst most agree rats are horrible. There's barely any difference. I swear people are brainwashed.

No one has mocked you.
But you mock people who find comfort in their pet dogs like they are pathetic people that need pity.
I am not a fan of babies. They repulse me with their snot, crying, and smells. I can not help how I feel, as it is a visceral reaction. That is a me problem. I would never dream of telling a mum that her baby was disgusting.

Hopefully basic hygiene rules will become comonplace again and I won't have to put up with it

Places that allow dogs still maintain a 5 star hygiene rating.
Dogs are, rightfully so, not allowed in food prep areas. But neither are members of the public.

Errors · 03/03/2025 19:38

I’m afraid you’ll just have to put up with it.
Many places allow dogs in simply because it’s good for business and the majority of people do not mind (or if you’re like me, are happy to see dogs in there)

For every one person that won’t eat in a cafe with a dog, I can bet there about ten that would

Hopefully basic hygiene rules will become comonplace again and I won't have to put up with it
