I was unable to attend an interview for a job will UC sanction me?

I set up the interview myself and told my work coach about it. I told him the job and it's at the council.

I was on the way to the interview but my daughter's school phoned and said she was unwell and needed picked up. I asked them to try her dad but he didn't answer. (I feel terrible she said she wasn't feeling too great this morning but with this interview I thought she'd pick up). So I've missed the interview

Is there a way UC would know? I only told them the date and what my interview was for and obviously at my local council. But there is tonnes of interviews all the time with the council

Will my UC be sanctioned?

Hopeless

@caringcarer there's no contact details whatsoever. I don't want to phone the school. There's no email or no phone number

Finding the contact details of a school isn’t difficult. You need to contact them and say you are not attending, and why. Not to do so is really rude, and if another job comes up they won’t be interested in you. And there is always the chance that they will reschedule the interview.

beAsensible1 · 27/02/2025 11:34

How did they get in contact to let you know you had an interview?

Hoppinggreen · 27/02/2025 11:34

akdox · 27/02/2025 10:38

@Freshflower there is no contact details other than the address of my interview. It's at a school I don't want to phone the school.

You should have done this.
When I have interviewed people for jobs who were on Benefits in the past I have been contacted by them for feedback (or to confirm they came) so they may well find out you didn't turn up.
If your DD wasn't very ill and could have waited another few hours you should still have gone. Some parents are not available straight away, my DC have had to wait at school for a bit until one of us could get there before.
No idea about sanctions though

@BobbyBiscuits won't the school be busy with pupils etc?

It’s not the teachers manning the school phones! They have a reception and office staff. Your first call after realising you couldn’t attend the interview should have been to the recruiter, that was very disrespectful of you to leave someone sat around waiting for you just to not show up. You could have explained and asked if it would be possible to rearrange for a different day. They more than likely will of done that but if they wouldn’t at least they’d know not to expect you. If the interview was for this morning I’d phone up know with apologies. If the job centre do contact the school to check and here you didn’t show up and gave no explanation or anything it really won’t look good for you

BobbyBiscuits · 27/02/2025 11:32

@akdox they have a reception. The irony of you refusing to communicate with a school that could be your employer, while dropping a job interview because of a call from another school.

schools have receptionists? You have a child in school, so I assume you know this?

it’s not teachers who answer is it

Ineedanotherholidaynow · 27/02/2025 11:28

I think you need to use your initiative and use Google to get the phone number. Phoning the school is the most common sense thing to do not to mention it would be rude to just not turn up.

Lairymary · 27/02/2025 11:27

Wow, flakey. If you had called them then you might have been able to rearrange an interview. You could have Googled the number. Your excuses are shite! 😂 I'd say you've done them a favour!!

HaddyAbrams · 27/02/2025 11:26

Will UC sanction you when you can presumably proof why you missed the interview? Probably not.

However, not phoning the interviewer to explain is disgusting.

bottlemom · 27/02/2025 11:26

If you were already on your way to the interview it wouldn't have taken that long would it? Unless an emergency your DC could have waited till after, or you could have contacted the school to let them know you weren't going. You sound pretty flaky, to be honest

Porcuporpoise · 27/02/2025 11:25

Lame @akdox very lame.

DelphiniumBlue · 27/02/2025 11:23

If you had looked on the school website you would have seen a number and an email address or an online contact form.
You are an adult, you are expected to show some initiative.

Why? Schools get phone calls from parents constantly. Just tell them what time you can pick her up.

Edit: Just seen you didn't bother going to the interview. Ignore my comment.

You should phone the school. No-shows are an annoying waste of time for interviewers.

TheSnootiestFox · 27/02/2025 11:00

To br fair, it sounds like the interviewing school have dodged a bullet here anyway 🙄

Whether you wanted to ring the school or not, that's the very least you should have done under the circumstances and I actually agree with the PP who said you should have told your daughter's school you were just walking into an interview and you'd be along afterwards.

This sort of behaviour is exactly why lone parents who do know how to behave professionally have a really hard time getting jobs. I didn't want to ring the school, they'd be busy....words fail me!

Notgivenuphope · 27/02/2025 11:00

In these circumstances I would have told your daughter’s school that unless she requires A&E I will not be picking up until after the interview.

Why don't you want to phone the school?! You have to let them know. Why wouldn't you just phone? There's a reception for exactly this purpose!

Though unless your child was at death's door I'd probably have left them until after the interview, school hour jobs are hard to come by.

The Admin Team who answer the phone will always make rime for such an important call.

Your daughter could have waited a while in school while you attended the interview. The school usually allows you time as they know parents aren't always able to get there immediately.

@boysmuminherts yes I am but in the meantime I need UC. I have a few interviews lined up so if I can't get this one then hopefully the next

You're not getting this job. You've shown yourself to be flakey and unreliable.

I can't believe that you didn't call them.

Not so much that the receptionist can’t answer the phone. You need to phone them.

JimHalpertsWife · 27/02/2025 10:52

Not calling the school to say you were pulling out of the interview is really rude.
