I was unable to attend an interview for a job will UC sanction me?

I set up the interview myself and told my work coach about it. I told him the job and it's at the council.

I was on the way to the interview but my daughter's school phoned and said she was unwell and needed picked up. I asked them to try her dad but he didn't answer. (I feel terrible she said she wasn't feeling too great this morning but with this interview I thought she'd pick up). So I've missed the interview

Is there a way UC would know? I only told them the date and what my interview was for and obviously at my local council. But there is tonnes of interviews all the time with the council

Will my UC be sanctioned?

You didnt call them and just didn’t turn up for the interview? That’s awful, you won’t get this job now. You should have gone to the interview and picked up your DC afterwards unless it was an emergency which it wasn’t.

@Freshflower there is no contact details other than the address of my interview. It's at a school I don't want to phone the school.

Why on earth would you not want to phone the school!? If you are going for a job interview there it's absolutely fine to ring the office and explain.
As others have said, in this situation I'd have told school I was 1.5hrs away and would get there as soon as possible (after the interview basically). What would sch have done if you were a nurse who couldn't look at her phone for an hour.

friendlycat · 27/02/2025 12:05

This is such a poor excuse. Of course you could have looked up the telephone number of the school online and rung the number. They would have answered I can assure you.

You seem far more concerned about what UC will say, rather than the fact you didn't turn up and have done nothing whatsoever to make amends.

Perhaps you didn't want to ring the school in question as this is where your child goes to school and your child was not ill and you have just fabricated this as well?

I despair at the apparent hopelessness of some people sometimes.
If your story is true, if you had wanted to attend the interview with the possibility of getting a job there, you would have got the number and rung and told them the circumstances. They would then have offered you another day for your interview. All quite simple. But I suggest you simply don't want a job.

BansheeOfTheSouth · 27/02/2025 12:04

A quick Google shows you can be sanctioned for not turning up to an interview @akdox . In your case it's likely as you didn't even contact them.

akdox · 27/02/2025 10:39

@BobbyBiscuits I can't find any contact details for my interview. All I got was an address.

then the very least you need to do is write to them. And next time get contact details (email and phone)

it is really rude not to turn up just like that. You need to tell the school to persist with the child's father, and then use judgement about things like ambulances. This is a discussion you need to have with your DH too - he must be available when you aren't.

The school is the contact details.

Jk987 · 27/02/2025 11:56

You should have tried her Dad again - he should have stepped up! The interview was top priority.

SofaSpuds · 27/02/2025 11:55

Ok, I'm now seeing this as a wind then up and watch them go thread.

@Trendydiscussion I thought that ...

JackieGoodman · 27/02/2025 11:53

@Trendydiscussion was thinking that Hmm
But @SapphireSeptember OPs job interview was with the council who are a million miles from what you have described. Job regulations aplenty

Oh for fuck's sake. I was unemployed (briefly) in 2021. I got a job with a home improvement company that I found out were dodgy and would pay me well below minimum wage because it's all comission based (the base wage was something like £100 a week for full time hours, I couldn't even pay my rent on that and it would fuck with my UC.) They wanted me to go in on the Monday. Monday morning came and I phoned them and said I wouldn't be working for them. Held on until I got a job at a DIY shop a few weeks later (it was the second time I'd applied for a job with them.) Nowt wrong with my work ethic.

You’re not the OP though who quite clearly will do anything to avoid even speaking to a potential job.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/02/2025 11:48

You don't sound like you wanted the job, as others have said. Your daughter's school would have understood if you'd said you were at a job interview. You can Google the school for their contact details, and you really should have phoned them directly. It's not hard.

@alwaysdeleteyourcookies I know, right?! Mind boggling really.

JackieGoodman · 27/02/2025 11:47

@viques you forgot the old reliable "the dog ate my homework" which rewritten for OPs scenario could be "the dog ate my phone/brain" Grin

This has to be a joke thread. Because no adult in their right mind thinks that you can’t phone a school about an interview they’re expecting you to attend.

Either that or you don’t want to work and are just sending out applications to get your work coach off your back and didn’t expect to get the interview.

MumChp · 27/02/2025 11:42

Tbh you should be reduced in UC. You don't want a job if you don't even phone to say you won't show!

alwaysdeleteyourcookies · 27/02/2025 11:42

akdox · 27/02/2025 10:50

@BobbyBiscuits won't the school be busy with pupils etc?

This question shouldn't be asked seriously by someone old enough to have a child in school, honestly.

viques · 27/02/2025 11:41

akdox · 27/02/2025 10:43

@boysmuminherts yes I am but in the meantime I need UC. I have a few interviews lined up so if I can't get this one then hopefully the next

Here are a few handy excuses to borrow.

The dog was sick.

The cat was sick.

My neighbour was sick.

The bus driver was sick.

My phone fell down the toilet.

My phone was out of charge.

I was abducted by Aliens.

I thought the interview was next week.

I couldn’t be arsed to come because there are always more interviews to attend and who knows, if I ever got to one I might get offered a better job than the one you were offering.

@caringcarer there's no contact details whatsoever. I don't want to phone the school. There's no email or no phone number

I don't get this... why don't you want to phone the school to let them know you won't be there for your interview? They're expecting you. It's very bad form.
How was the interview arranged if you have no phone number, email address, contact name/details???

Re collecting your DD, you were on your way to the interview I think, you could have done it and collected her afterwards. What if they didn't connect with you immediately? They would have had to wait until you answered.

friendlycat · 27/02/2025 11:40

DelphiniumBlue · 27/02/2025 11:23

If you had looked on the school website you would have seen a number and an email address or an online contact form.
You are an adult, you are expected to show some initiative.

Indeed.

sanityisamyth · 27/02/2025 11:39

I can't even think what position you'd be suitable for in a school. Every employee needs to be able to turn up on time, or let their employer know that they're not going to work that day, for whatever reason. You couldn't even manage the bare minimum!
