Cancelling TUI holiday

nepobaby · 26/02/2025 14:07

Hello everyone,

Hoping someone can give me a quick answer before I call them later on.

Got a 2 week holiday booked in Cyprus from 18th June for 2 weeks.

For myself 'D'h and DD.

I hadn't got insurance yet as we only booked it 6 weeks ago. My marriage has broken down as I've just found out my husband has had multiple affairs.

As the holiday is quite a way away still, what's the hope in me getting my money back? If the chances are zilch I'll go with DD still. I paid for the whole thing, in cash so it's fully paid off.

Thanks!

Pay the amendment fee and go in a few months time with your dd when you've got your head around what's happened. Do you both good to have something to look forward to, you could take another adult if you change the name as well.

I everyone just a small update. I've spoken to a lovely guy at TUI who was a great help.

So, if I cancel before 70 days is up I get a full refund minus £600 deposit.

I think I'm going to cancel and then rebook somewhere for a week with DD. I don't have anybody that can go for the full 2 weeks and I worry if I go by myself for the whole duration with DD, I won't get much of a break as it will be parenting just in a different environment. And I could really do with a break. So I think I'll rebook somewhere for a week, perhaps in the same place but see if I can get family or a friend to come with me for the week.

Thank you all for your advice. I really am utterly broken.

Don’t do this if you’re planning another holiday, just pay the £50pp amend fee rather than losing £200pp deposit!

Yes, just about.

Will have life long complications from it. It's the first holiday since 2019 as I haven't been fit to fly.

I'm beyond broken.

I am really pleased about that and I hope you and DD can have a great holiday you deserve it.

I know you feel broken and your world is falling apart but he hasn’t broken you -he doesn’t have that power or right to do that too you. Wishing you and DD all the very best.

Blueberry911 · 26/02/2025 18:02

What a prick. I hope you can rebook somewhere lovely for a week and have the nice time you deserve.

BashfulClam · 26/02/2025 17:33

You should get insurance the same time as booking your holiday not wait at all. Ok so now I’ve said that I’d go with DD and have a break as you probably need it. Also if he’s been with multiple people please get yourself tested for STI’s.

VanCleefArpels · 26/02/2025 17:31

On timing of insurance it’s really important to get it the day you book a holiday in case of health or other issues that prevent you from taking the holiday.

Pearl97 · 26/02/2025 17:24

I’m really pleased. Maybe look for a good kids club.
well done for calling x

I have a feeling there is more flexibility than this within that specialist team (I have a friend who works in it). Certainly worth a go and nothing to lose by asking :-)

I work for them too. it’s generally just medical and armed forces being deployed etc sadly doesn’t extend to family breakdowns

Userjal · 26/02/2025 14:49

The exception policy wouldn’t cover something like this unfortunately, but as many people have said outside of 10 weeks you’ll only lose the deposit amount which is £200pp short haul or £250 long haul. Unless it was a none TUI flight which you may then lose then flight cost too

CottonCandyCrank · 26/02/2025 15:56

Sorry to hear this. Are you not able to take a friend/family member with you to take his place? And just name change. If you cant get anyone to take his place, then just cancel his place by amending, you may or may not get some money back.

Even if paid in full you can cancel and will only lose the deposit.. but honestly, I would still go and enjoy yourself with your child. You wouldn't want to be home when the dates come thinking 'oh I should be on holiday' etc. That may make you feel worse.

Justsayit123 · 26/02/2025 15:19

Call tui and see what they say. Even if you can get a free name change, that would be better than nothing.

LunaDeBallona · 26/02/2025 15:16

The deposit amount will be somewhere on your booking form.
It’s usually around £250 pp so you will loose £750.
As a word of warning ALWAYS get travel insurance from the day you book your holiday. It’s not just there to cover your holiday. It’s a bit like buying a car and saying ‘I’ll buy insurance when I go on a long journey’. You need insurance from the moment you have bought the ‘product’ whether it be a car or a holiday.

So sorry about your husband, There’s been some awful stories on here lately.

MrsJHernandez · 26/02/2025 15:07

I'm so, so sorry OP. What a bastarding, shitting twat he is.

I'm glad you're recovering from your treatment.

No idea about your holibobs money I'm afraid, but I would go anyway or swap it for a different one. You need a nice, relaxing break in the sun ❤️

@nepobaby What a crappy situation. But please get travel insurance regardless as a cancer survivor or even just as a parents it’s pretty irresponsible to intend to travel without it. Pay to change names and take a friend or family
member and go have a nice holiday without that nasty POS. I had an exH pretty much identical to yours by the sounds of it- and don’t regret our break up one bit- and have a FAR FAR happier and more fulfilled life without him, as will you!

I was never going to travel without it. I wouldn't be so stupid.

I was going to get round to doing it this weekend. I just hadn't got round to doing it yet, but I'd never travel without it x

Sorry to hear that OP. TUI do have an exceptions team who can support in exceptional circumstances such as these - we were supported by them when our toddler caught Hand, Foot and Mouth the day before we were due to travel, and they gave us a full refund.

Worth calling them, explaining the situation, and seeing if they have some flexibility.

QueSyrahSyrah · 26/02/2025 14:46

You'll need to speak to TUI. You may well get a partial refund if you're still outside the cancellation terms but it will depend what's booked. I work in travel and some of our flights and hotels are non-refundable no matter how far in advance they're cancelled. They're always marked as such at the time of booking though.

I'm so sorry this has happened and hope you get a decent amount back (or else a lovely holiday with your DD).

Pearl97 · 26/02/2025 14:41

If you feel you can’t call, I do find Tui quite helpful on Facebook. Messenger. It’s worth messaging and seeing what they say. Insurance wouldn’t help unless anyway in this circumstance so if you can please contact them. You have enough to deal with without worrying about this x

If it's fully paid and you're able to, I'd still go. You'll be glad of a break somewhere else and presumably DD is looking forward to it too? It's still a few months off so you might have got your head around your situation a little more by then. Agree with pp above that maybe there's a friend or relative you could ask to go with you and pay for the name change?

heinztomatosoup · 26/02/2025 14:35

It also depends if the flights were with TUI or another airline. If another then you also lose 100% of the flight cost. This happened to me identical situation with a breakup. Lost almost half the money despite cancelling months ahead of departure

Sunshine1500 · 26/02/2025 14:30

You can cancel, lose a deposit, change the holiday or change his name and go with someone else. I’d still go have a great time and let him see what he’s missing!
