House dilemma (with diagram)

Need some quick thoughts for this please as I'm on a timer. I went to look at a house through social housing yesterday, it's mine if I want it. There's a new bathroom and kitchen although everywhere else needs tlc. My main issue is that the next door neighbours have access to the back garden from their property, would this put anyone off? Diagram for looking at below. The arrows is where next door can walk through.

Take it and swap later if a problem?

This is my first offer after being on the list since July 2023, relatively short compared to a lot of the country.

In that case I think you would be crazy not to take it. Can you fence off a bit of the garden to maintain access but increase privacy?

snotathing · 22/03/2025 12:22

I was just thinking of this yesterday too. How is it working out OP?

Beyondbeliefsometimes · 22/03/2025 00:50

@OneGreyBiscuit@OneGreyBiscuithow you getting on in your hew house? Hope you have settled in well and neighbours are no trouble

You could become overly chatty and detain them for inane conversations every time they come through your garden, it might put them off. 😁

This might be worth a try!

Longdarkcloud · 27/02/2025 22:05

Temu usually has cheap removable privacy film for you window which wouldn’t block the light or your view. Less trouble than curtains or until you decide what else you need.

OneGreyBiscuit · 26/02/2025 09:18

Yes it's the rules I'm afraid, so nothing I can do about it

It's probably a really important access point. My family home on a street of Victorian terraces has gates all the way through and they have to be unlocked for access for wheelie bins and also for the fire brigade/ emergency services etc.

my neighbours moved in a year ago, we have a fence and it is quite low so they can see over it. On the other side the fence is higher but as their garden is built higher they can see over the fence too.

Both sides have been caught many times looking over the fence into our kitchen by me, my son and ex. It was frigging annoying, so much we had to keep blinds closed when we didn't want to. In the end I would just stand and stare back at them to make them feel uncomfortable.

I would hope your neighbours are more respectful and not look into your kitchen window.

WiddlinDiddlin · 27/02/2025 04:53

@BoredZelda ... to do what?

Keep them out of the main garden, but that would also block OP's view of it - low fence would not block the view but would also not stop any chatty neighbours stopping to chat on their way through.

Up against the window to keep them from looking in at OP as they pass by... would also stop her getting light or looking out.

To redirect them elsewhere - the right of way is across the back to the gate at the side of the row, you can't redirect a right of way without permission and it may not be possible to redirect it elsewhere, if other gardens back onto the OP's garden for example.

You can't simple block peoples access to their rear garden if a right of access applies!

BoredZelda · 26/02/2025 23:34

I'd put up a fence.

weirdoboelady · 26/02/2025 23:26

Good luck, and I'm sure you have the determination and intelligence to make it work well for you x

SabreIsMyFave · 26/02/2025 22:21

Glad to hear you have taken it @OneGreyBiscuit I hope you will be super happy there. Smile

Londonrach1 · 26/02/2025 13:28

I wouldn't touch it. Sorry op. It be harder to resell and could be a pain. Ive had a friend who parents house had similar set up and it was awful.

It's social housing.

Phase2 · 26/02/2025 19:09

Good luck and I think as it's social housing you made the right choice. Sounds like my nightmare experiences are rare so you should be fine.
When the access was through our garden, the neighbour and her kids used it all the time (meant to be for access/bins - what realistically can you do to enforce the is?) and so did her extended family. Meant I was constantly on toddler watch as I had a small child.
OTOH when I was meant to have access the arsehole neighbours had three terrifying dogs that lived outside and refused to bring them in. Again, what can you do?

Lellochip · 26/02/2025 18:26

This set up is a little odd, but you do quckly get used to it. My neighbours have access through mine, and use it as their main entrance. Every trip out, every visitor, delivery man, family, taking their dogs out... Them being nice & friendly helps, but honestly unless I'm doing my washing up or happen to be leaving at the same time, you stop noticing.

Congratulations on your new house!

Fairislesweater · 26/02/2025 17:47

It feels odd because it’s the back garden, but there are plenty of houses with front windows that give straight onto the street where anyone can walk past.

BettyBardMacDonald · 26/02/2025 17:40

I'm sure it will be fine and the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. (And I say that as one who prefers privacy.)

Maybe as others have suggested, the gate can be moved. Or, you could erect some sort of shrub/fence barrier partway down the garden, so that you could have privacy in the rear of it, for gardening or sunbathing or whatnot.

Them walking right by your window isn't ideal but it's no different to old houses whose front room is right next to the pavement.

Congratulations on your new home and I am sure you will have fun making it your own!!!

Destiny123 · 26/02/2025 17:19

I have access via my neighbours garden, i only walk through twice a day to cycle to work. Don't think it's a huge deal. My parents think it's a pain in the neck but doesn't bother me. But then I can get directly out into my garden via my back door so only use there's to take my bike out not general garden access

JillMW · 26/02/2025 17:15

I would hold out for one of the others. Much better to be the one walking through than having to put up with anything awkward that might happen.

AndrewPreview · 26/02/2025 16:47

I'm pleased you've taken it OP, a friend of mine lives in a house with a similar set up and has no bother with the neighbours. Stick some privacy film up and you'll be grand :)

Congrats on the new house!

Floralnomad · 26/02/2025 16:30

I wouldn’t buy a house like this but in your circumstances I think you are right to take it .

TwentyKittens · 26/02/2025 16:20

OneGreyBiscuit · 26/02/2025 13:21

I've decided to go for it, at the end of the day if I really can't bear it, I'll either house swap or go back an live with my mum, kids go back to dads an ill put possessions in my brother's old room or sell them, I can't let this opportunity pass by without trying at least. I'm too old for a mortgage, can't afford private rent. If I fall on my arse, so be it, won't be the first time!

Glad you went for it, OP. You can put up a stick on window screen, and what I'd do is put up a fence between the two gates so they can't see into the garden as they're walking past. But I'd wait to see how often they did walk past first!

Good luck!
