Boycotttjng US Products and Services

CovenOfCheeses · 24/02/2025 18:45

Several of my friends have started a local campaign to boycott all US made goods and services. I have also started to do so because of the attitudes of the President to the rule of law and international co-operation. I have stopped buying from Amazon and have deleted my social media accounts and stopped using US made products. I feel that a country that is so antagonistic toward us should not be supported by our cash.

My eldest daughter is gay and has been saving up with her friend to go to the Dinah Shore weekend in the US. I said I would contribute some cash but now feel reticent to do so. She argues that she is going to support the people who are being attacked by Donald Trump, but I think that we should not give money to a country (even though it was only 50%) who twice voted for a menace to international order and the rule of law. I feel that during apartheid, it was only due to the economic boycotts that the system ended. It hurt the people who were in the country who did not agree to the system, but the economic impact forced the system to change. I think that by making a stand and making the people aware of how their president in impacting the world. Am I being unreasonable in withholding cash for her trip?

You are, of course, both wrong and offensive. I am very heartened that others are willing to make the effort to support the marginalised and disenfranchised of the 'United' States. Where women's right are being rolled back to the 1950's, the progress of challenging the white straight misogynistic community is being lost. The big orange one is misogynistic, self interested and deeply ignorant. I have done my best so far; cancelled sky, Amazon prime and, today, bought walnuts from Moldova rather than USA whilst shopping in Sainsbury's. Boycotting South Africa products & Barclays Bank helped with apartheid in the 1980's. I am 64 and ready to support the fight again for freedom and equality. Either your part of the solution or part of the problem. Chose and make an effort.
All the best to those who are trying.

He was elected because the Democrats were an abysmal dismal prospect and the worst of the two options. They/them only have them/theyselves to blame.

Edited

Yes but it makes you laugh when Obama and Bush shake there heads with disbelief too

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/03/2025 09:27

Nonsense. The only people resoonsible for Trump are those who chose him.🙄

And Vlad Putin of course.

I do wonder every day why Trump was elected. I mean you listen to the likes of Robert de Niro saying he would never be able to play Trump as he wouldn't want to play such a psychotic character.
I also wonder why the Republican party and, previously, the Democrats with Biden, could only find these two old white men to run for President.
Boycotting as many US products as we can can only be good for our own health anyway.

You will make your life pretty difficult with this boycott but you do you. BTW have you actually had a conversation with people who live in the USA to understand why they voted the way they did? Just a thought.

Yes, I will do me. I am glad I have a conscience and stand for things I believe in.

Whataboutery. I don't approve of either and expect most people on here would either, but this thread is about US boycotts.

Agreed

What do you think Shein and Temu are doing but having a trade war using sweat shops

I've never bought a single thing from either.

The CEO of the Jack Daniels company is upset with Canada. What a pity. It would be a shame if the Canadian boycott spread throughout the civilised world. I can't help, not being a whiskey drinker. And Budweiser sold here is pretty awful so I'm already not drinking that.

Canadians are getting organised: https://www.reddit.com/r/BuyCanadian/

I'm trying to cut out any US (not American as that covers the entire continent) products. Google has gone and I'm now using Qwant (https://www.qwant.com/?l=en) which is French based even though it does use data from Bing. At least ad revenue stays away from the US.

Qwant

Fast, reliable answers and still in trust: Qwant does not store your search data, does not sell your personal data and is hosted in Europe.

New polling out of Canada showing 2/3rds of Canadians buying fewer US products.

I imagine that number will increase with tariffs now confirmed to be coming into effect tomorrow.

sleepwouldbenice · 04/03/2025 00:21

After his latest move I am joining you in the boycott OP

He's just bullying to get the minerals

Makes me sick to the stomach

I don't care who laughs or criticises what I do. Its better than nothing

Don't support a trade deal either. I will enjoy the tariffs impacting their voters

OneLemonDog · 04/03/2025 00:20

That's that, then.

Sorry, I thought I put this on a new thread!

Have you thought of boycotting “Operation Ouch” until the producers make sure the women dress modestly? Maybe not show too much ankle?

Half-naked woman on CBBC Operation Ouch! AIBU to feel it’s inappropriate to have “Dynamite”, who is a skimpily-dressed gladiator on a kids’ show? She appeared on a segment of the first episode of the new series flirting with the handsome twin Black doctors, Raph and Dan. It just seemed sexualised to me.

Sorry, I thought I put this on a new thread!
