I always think anyone having a bad time on Facebook has either a)crap friends or b)crap security settings or c) both

I keep getting horse related videos even though I have no interest in horses any more, bog off. I click not interested and hide the page in question but still they come

Also various pages starting "dull mens"

So glad you posted this, I wondered if I was getting over sensitive in my old age!

I get a load of old crap, but nothing nasty or sinister. I honestly wouldn't bother with Facebook at all, but my youngest son has two very challenging illnesses and I'm on support groups for both. They have been absolute lifelines for me. Oh and knitting and crochet groups😁

I honestly don't get that kind of stuff but the interface is shockingly bad for such a megalith of social media. It just looks old fashioned, very hard to navigate.

I only use it for my groups.

I'd like an alternative but what?

I like my My FBk feed a lot. There are useless ads but there's more good than annoying content. You do have to actively curate.

Erm I'm on Facebook and I've never seen a single one of those things.. and I use Facebook a lot.
I get videos of cute babies, flowers, feminist topics and comedy.
Your algorithm sounds messed up.. have you unwittingly liked a post or joined a group that is in someway affiliated with the far right?

I'm getting a lot of holiday ads - mainly to the USA. I'm not going on holiday, haven't looked up holidays on any interwar sites.

About 1/2 - 1/3 are filled with comments along the lines of 'not for the next 4 years.'

The algorithm shows you what it thinks you want to see. There is something in your viewing history, either on FB or more widely on the web, which causes it to show you this content

I made the mistake of letting ds3 watch some Family YT stuff on my phone a couple of weeks ago...A for Adley, Ninja Kids etc.

Now I'm being absolutely bombarded with fucking awful, cringey family vloggers on FB.

I don't look any more. All my oldest friends are on there and a lot of my friends from my old job, but the horrible videos and images are too awful to look at. I just don't go to the site any more.

It is not a nice place now. On the recommendation of others on this thread I opened a Blue Sky account and it is a much nicer place

I hardly ever post and never put up images and have yet to see any far right garbage but that said, I hardly ever log on so maybe they target people who use it a lot. Closed my Twitter account as it had become totally vile as opposed to quite vile and no way do I want to be in any way associated with anything that Musk is up to. I do like Instagram and Bluesky.

What is it with cats on these websites, a few people on this threads have mentioned cats. I have also seen pictures of cats sometimes on here.

I've not noticed this on mine... It might be what people you're connected with are watching... I tend to find that has an effect. I.e. I get loads of French videos since I'm connected with French people who presumably watch or like them.

It is extremely clogged up with ads though- much worse than it used to be. As PP said, I think friends have stopped posting stuff so there is not much 'real' content. I'm using it for some community stuff and sales sites but it will become increasingly less relevant.

I don't get disgusting content, but I get very little I'm at all interested in (and clicking not interested does SFA to change the content). And then news from friends and families turns up days or even weeks after it's been posted. It's not a social network for me anymore, just an advertising feed.

I don’t have this problem but I have got the privacy locked down both on who can send friend requests, view my profile and see my posts, so I’m not sure if that helps

I’m shocked. I never get hate speech or disturbing stuff. It’s all a bit dull to be fair. The odd post from friends, reminder pix and local news. I never post anything controversial or political or interact with posts like that. I’m just dull I think.
