Another splitting costs with family

Bananapants5 · 23/02/2025 16:33

Weekend trip with family

Parents (pensioners)
Sibling 1 - with husband and 2 children (young)
Sibling 2 - with husband - teen children not interested in coming.

Wanting to book 4 bed place due to ages of sibling 1s children
How should cost be split?

Split into 8 and then each family pay cost? (YABU)
Split among 6 adults? (YANBU)

To not drip feed the cost of 4 bed place is no more than a 3 bed place

Tell us you're the sibling with young kids without telling us op.

I would chip in a bit more if my kids had their won room

CatsorDogsrule · 23/02/2025 18:39

1/3rd each per couple. Sibling 1 gets last choice of their 2 rooms, although could be tricky if not close together/ on separate floors.

Nooo, surely the parents of disinterested teens. You can't pay according to level of interest.

Parents (pensioners)
Sibling 1 - with husband and 2 children (young)
Sibling 2 - with husband - teen children not interested in coming.

So -

Parents pay one-quarter
Sibling 1 pays half (two rooms & twice as many people using the bathroom etc)
Sibling 2 pays one quarter.

IgnoranceIsStrength · 23/02/2025 18:25

We have this set up coming up. I'm sibling 1. I covered to pay for 1/2 as we have 2 bedrooms but sibling 2 and parents have said no and we are all paying a third. To make it fairer they will be getting the nicer rooms and the 2 we have aren't as big/nice. So it depends on your family dynamica

Diningtableornot · 23/02/2025 18:16

Split per room. It's a red herring that you could get a 3 bed for the same cost. The communal areas might be much nicer in the 3 bed, or there might be an extra bathroom.

DingDongDenny · 23/02/2025 18:13

When we have gone away with friends in circumstances like this, we have split it as adults pay full price and kids 50%. The kids will be using all the living spaces as well so it's only fair the family with kids contributes more. This worked whether families had one kid or three.

We used this system in many different locations, so sometimes those with kids had bigger rooms and their kids were in with them. In other places kids got their own room, which tended to tbe the smallest room. But families with kids always had more space overall

Doodar · 23/02/2025 18:04

1/3 each

ValentineValentineV · 23/02/2025 18:02

Split 7 ways with sibling 1 paying 3/7.

longdistanceclaraaa · 23/02/2025 17:58

Is this already or is it likely to become a genuine bone of contention, or are you, for example, sibling 1 and just want to check what is fair?

In my family it'd be split between the adults all day long, and particularly so if there is no extra cost to the extra room.

Any squabbling about this in this scenario would make me think people did not have the same open-hearted approach to the weekend away.

They’re not subsidising anything if it’s the same price.

Everyone else is getting less value for money though because the accommodation is less good. so they are still subsidising by paying over the odds for the accommodation they have.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 23/02/2025 17:56

Grandparents should probably pay for the whole thing to make up for Boomers having a lifetime of easy money.

Londoner24 · 23/02/2025 16:36

Split among adults only - esp as cost of 4 bed place is no more than a 3 bed

This as the cost is the same for 4 beds, and everyone will be more comfortable

Split between 8 people unless children are staying in their parents’ room. It’s not the GP’s or S2’s responsibility to subsidise S1’s holiday.

They’re not subsidising anything if it’s the same price.

Talipesmum · 23/02/2025 17:28

We’d split per room. Unless we were working to accommodate a less well off family - so if sibling with young children was a lot less well off than the other adults, I know the parents and other sibling would suggest a 3 way split.

But if there’s not a big disparity, we’d do per room. Kids tend to take up a lot more room than adults anyway, with toys, running around etc (at least our family ones all do!).

Roseshavethorns · 23/02/2025 17:24

I would split it by room but when we go out for meals, buy groceries etc I would split costs by 3.

JoyousEagle · 23/02/2025 17:19

Split three ways in this case.

How is the 4 bed the same cost as the 3 bed? Is it not as nice as the 3 bed?

Good question, photos look much the same. Maybe rooms are smaller - I don’t know though, maybe not as nice, everyone involved is happy with the accommodation though

TheFunHare · 23/02/2025 17:17

I'd say split equally between rooms unless there are 3 lovely double ensuite rooms and the kids have a crappy twin in which case they should definitely have a discount.

cheddercherry · 23/02/2025 16:51

If it’s genuinely no different in price then just split three ways.

If there’s a difference then it depends on previous context: if sibling 2 has already had years of paying extra for their now teen kids before these younger kids came along then I don’t think the rules should shift now if sibling 1 doesn’t want to pay the extra rooms for their kids, if their sibling has always covered the extra cost of their children in the past.

When sibling 2s children were young they lived abroad so trips like this didn’t happen, there also wasn’t funds for trips meals etc in the family.
