Another splitting costs with family

Bananapants5 · 23/02/2025 16:33

Weekend trip with family

Parents (pensioners)
Sibling 1 - with husband and 2 children (young)
Sibling 2 - with husband - teen children not interested in coming.

Wanting to book 4 bed place due to ages of sibling 1s children
How should cost be split?

Split into 8 and then each family pay cost? (YABU)
Split among 6 adults? (YANBU)

To not drip feed the cost of 4 bed place is no more than a 3 bed place

How about my suggestion of 1/7’s and sibling 1 pays 3/7?

This isn’t a bad idea.
the main issue is we all want to pay our way 😂

Per room.

sunshineandshowers40 · 23/02/2025 19:38

I would suggest splitting by room if I was the sibling with young children but would happily split just between the adults if I was the sibling with teens at home.

When we have gone away with friends in circumstances like this, we have split it as adults pay full price and kids 50%. The kids will be using all the living spaces as well so it's only fair the family with kids contributes more. This worked whether families had one kid or three.

We used this system in many different locations, so sometimes those with kids had bigger rooms and their kids were in with them. In other places kids got their own room, which tended to tbe the smallest room. But families with kids always had more space overall

That's what we did.

Unfortunately we were the ones with the four children. 😂

Split three ways (1/3 per household).

Or this.

But I wouldn't start divvying it up by number of children. That's a bit tight.

Split between the six adults.

God, this and only this.

heavenstruck · 23/02/2025 19:27

Split 3 ways

Ophy83 · 23/02/2025 19:25

Split into 3.. but parents and the couple without kids get first choice of rooms, then the family get remaining two rooms

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 23/02/2025 19:24

Split 3 ways

Helen1625 · 23/02/2025 19:19

I would split it so that each couple pays 1/3 😊

CuriousGeorge80 · 23/02/2025 19:10

In our friendship group we split by room. There will be a reason the 4 bed is the same price as the 3 bed!

In our family my parents just pay for it all, thankfully 😂

JustTalkToThem · 23/02/2025 19:06

Roseshavethorns · 23/02/2025 17:24

I would split it by room but when we go out for meals, buy groceries etc I would split costs by 3.

This is the silliest answer

TeamMandrake · 23/02/2025 19:02

In all honestly, these things only work if the parents pay the lot. Otherwise it descends into petty resentment because X got the room with the ensuite and Y used more than their fair share of cornflakes.

Kedece2410 · 23/02/2025 19:00

How much is the difference in splitting it 3 ways rather than 4

arcticpandas · 23/02/2025 18:58

Well, you came here to ask so I take it wasn't obvious in your mind to split 1/3?

I guess that’s what happens when you assume things.

I’ve not said anywhere that I’m not happy with that.

Trickabrick · 23/02/2025 18:59

In this scenario we split by bedroom. It’s irrelevant what the cost of a 3 bed place is as presumably it doesn’t have enough bedrooms.

GoneGirl12345 · 23/02/2025 18:59

If I were the parents of the 2 children, I would offer to split per room purely because out of principle of my family having an extra room. I guess the reality is there is an extra room in the house which no one else can use if it is being occupied by these two kids.

If I were the sibling with no kids on the trip and the cost was genuinely the same as the 3 bed, I'd say don't worry, we would just split it 3 ways.

EcruCardigan · 23/02/2025 18:58

Treat the 2 kids as half an adult each if under 12 y o?

If you do only the adults pay, it sets a precedent, and they might be big strapping teenagers on subsequent trips.

Bananapants5 · 23/02/2025 18:56

arcticpandas · 23/02/2025 18:55

You split it between the couples ; 1/3. If 4 rooms were much more expensive than 3 I would have said to pay per room as on sibling with children covering half the cost of the total. This is not the case so it's very easy to settle at 1/3. Why, are you not happy with that OP? Do you think your sibling should pay more just because they use two rooms?

Nooo, surely the parents of disinterested teens. You can't pay according to level of interest.

I am the parent of the teens, they are staying at home however so don’t need paying for

Is this already or is it likely to become a genuine bone of contention, or are you, for example, sibling 1 and just want to check what is fair?

In my family it'd be split between the adults all day long, and particularly so if there is no extra cost to the extra room.

Any squabbling about this in this scenario would make me think people did not have the same open-hearted approach to the weekend away.

I mainly want it to be fair for the parents tbh, it won’t become a bone of contention because we aren’t great communicators so wouldn’t know but potentially it would be brought up if we were to do a similar thing again.
Sibling 1 is quite keen to have her children involved in family things like this where sibling 2 wasn’t

Tumbleweed44 · 23/02/2025 18:52

Split into 3.

Usually rooms are not equal.
