to think more negative effects will come out from Ozempic use?

Just read that the 30 year old singer Avery has been diagnosed with osteoporosis due to Ozempic use. Looks like this could be the start of many conditions coming out.

I know Ozempic is incredibly helpful for a lot of people but losing weight but then having osteoporosis does not seem worth it.

Oh op. That must be so hard for you, this constant worry about fully regulated prescription meds, how much of your life is consumed worrying about drugs you don’t take?

OP hasnt even 'reached out' to me lately given that Im on medication that leaches calcium out of me and risks osteoporosis in later life.

Does no one care? Wheres my thread?

AndThereSheGoes · 22/02/2025 22:04

It's relatively short term for weight loss. Most problems are caused by many years of taking/ doing something.

Everything has side effects
This is a drug I'm on and it's so I can exercise. I had to spend 2hrs in hospital the first time because of the high risk of anaphylaxis
In America everyone who is on it is given an EpiPen
Not to mention the other side effects

It's up to the individual, I choose to take it because the increased risk of cancer isn't confirmed

I am currently on Rybelsus (oral Ozempic) for diabetes, not weight loss. It was originally prescribed to regulate blood sugar in diabetics. I am not overweight. However, getting from "normal" to "thin but not too thin" could definitely help me to possibly be able to get my blood sugar back into normal range and go off all drugs. So I am hoping to only be on these meds for a couple more months, six months total.

That said, yes I do wonder what might come out about Ozempic and the other semaglutide drugs in the future, especially when they're used long term. (For diabetes, I believe the usual expectation is to be on them forever, though I don't plan to do that myself. If the weight loss isn't enough to correct my blood sugar, then I will switch to one of the old tried-and-true meds diabetes meds).

Now they're saying Ozempic also greatly helps with alcoholism. It really does seem to be touted as a "wonder drug." However, as far as I know, the long term effects simply are not yet known.

The SUSTAIN trials for Ozempic have been running for over 10 years

SilenceInside · 22/02/2025 21:33

@Pebbles16 so the black market in Ozempic in the UK, as in the branded medication manufactured by Novo Nordisk, is preventing diabetics in the UK from getting Ozempic on prescription? How does that work?

PheasantPluckers · 22/02/2025 21:29

Someone with a longstanding ED might have got osteoporosis anyway - how is it certain that the (unprescribed) drug caused it?

Side effects of these weight loss drugs may well come out in time (as with any drug), but for most of the people who qualify to take it, the known health issues of being obese outweigh the risks of what might be discovered later down the line.

Pebbles16 · 22/02/2025 21:28

SilenceInside · 22/02/2025 20:18

I wonder what @Pebbles16 is referring to then? How are people accessing Ozempic in the UK and harming diabetics if it's not available, and people are prescribed Wegovy for weight loss instead?

Black market. You cannot be prescribed Ozempic for weightloss.
Although they are both semaglutide, they are prescribed in different doses for people living with diabetes vs. people living with obesity
(I realise my way of describing it may lead people to believe that I am AI, but I have worked in this field for years and it is how we describe "patients")

@SwingTheMonkey You should report the laughing emoji if it’s being used to be inflammatory. Mumsnet are keeping an eye on it.

Regarding this thread, it’s bollocks as usual, we’ve pretty much hit the bingo card and I was thinking earlier how we’ve not had a WLI bashing thread in about a week Grin

We do need to add ‘yOu WiLl LoSe ALL yOuR mUsCLe’ but I think we’ve run out of room..

Thanks - I’ll report!

Very likely osteoporosis came from the eating disorder.

They won’t. They just leave a laughing response to your post.

How did you guess?! It’s a relief their anxiety about weight loss drugs isn’t ruining their ability to smile a little at life, bless them.

It really would be good if @nameey could share what other prescription drugs worried them as I’m sure posters could offer reassurance or information.

Yes, I do feel that unknown side effects will come out over time. Because this is the way with all drugs and all diet choices - something new will come along for people to make a quick buck out of

According to Instagram currently, statins are now the devil incarnate because although they might save people from dying early from heart disease, they are going to cause dementia because brains need cholesterol.

Currently it's better to be carnivore or better to be vegan? Who knows?

I suspect that taking a drug that completely kills your appetite and does so by making you nauseous isn't ideal. To me that looks like an eating disorder made legit.

That's not what the drug does though.

There is something about women losing weight that brings out a mean streak in some other women* Which is bloody strange because a sour face is a damn sight more unsightly than 20 stone of adipose tissue.

SilenceInside · 22/02/2025 20:54

@soupyspoon well, a previous poster was making the claim that people are specifically being prescribed Ozempic for weight loss, and depriving diabetics from accessing it. Which turns out to be nonsense. Because it isn't prescribed for weight loss, Wegovy is and there's no shortage of that and diabetics aren't being harmed by people with a private prescription for Wegovy.

I doubt there's anyone being prescribed Ozempic privately for weight loss in the UK - their private doctor would prescribe them Wegovy instead.

soupyspoon · 22/02/2025 20:53

SwingTheMonkey · 22/02/2025 20:49

Ok. Weird that’s what you’ve picked up on. But, you do you.

Im not sure Im the weird one here, you made the post in the first place, someone is going to answer you of course. Dont post things if you dont expect or want a response.

Farellyo · 22/02/2025 20:52

Maybe, maybe not. If it's prescribed responsibly for weight loss within the guidelines etc then the risk benefit as the person will be obese if prescribed it will still be in favour of the medication as obesity has so many health risks and implications.

soupyspoon · 22/02/2025 20:50

Aintnobodygottime · 22/02/2025 20:46

Here you go - Sudafed. IABU to worry that people will give themselves convulsions taking this dangerous medicine when they could just blow their nose more often and sit in a steamy room?

www.drugs.com/sudafed.html

Im on an anti epileptic medication, although Im not epileptic, you want to see the side effects of that one!!

Twiglets1 · 22/02/2025 20:49

SwingTheMonkey · 22/02/2025 20:14

You won’t be given it again. It’s no longer licensed for weight loss alone. Only type 2 diabetes.

I know. People have now switched to being prescribed Wegovy instead or Mounjaro. I believe they work in the same way.

SwingTheMonkey · 22/02/2025 20:49

soupyspoon · 22/02/2025 20:45

But its just a name for the active ingredient, marketing. Its the same thing

The horror stories are bullshit as we all know but people are using both Ozempic and Wegovy depending on what their prescriber uses. Simple as that.

Ok. Weird that’s what you’ve picked up on. But, you do you.

soupyspoon · 22/02/2025 20:48

SilenceInside · 22/02/2025 20:37

@soupyspoon so Ozempic is being prescribed off label for weight loss, instead of Wegovy which is the exact same medication, which is intended for weight loss. Presumably prescribed by a private doctor? Why would they prescribe Ozempic rather than Wegovy in that situation?

Ive no idea, who cares, its only the name of the prescription they are using.

I dont know why threads like this fall into hostility and quibbles about why people are using this or that. Its the same stuff. Is there such consternation about whether someone is using plain old ibruprophen or sparkly neurophen. Who cares, it does the same job.

Erm… I don’t have any ‘beef’. Just fed up with hearing all of the horror stories of ‘ozempic’ when very, very few of those using WLI are using ozempic.

What an odd thing to pick up on in a thread full of inaccuracies and fallacies.
