Scared of what labour will do

Wantachangefor2024 · 22/02/2025 01:58

Is anyone else terrified of what labour will enforce. The tax on farmers. Will they means test pip? Will they tax state pension more? What else will they do and where will it all end. They ruthlessly without no care took away the winter fuel allowance. Means testing and taxing state pension would massively impact my family

@Rummly "Ah, are you making a distinction between LinkedIn, statements to the commons and a website, and a formal CV?"

I don't understand- you said someone claimed to be a solicitor and I asked you who.

Jonathan Reynolds.

Can you imagine the howls of outrage from Labour if the Tories had made this eminently sensible change?

“People will die, international pariah, warmongers” etc etc etc.

Indeed…

@Rummly "I want to be absolutely clear: I have no doubt the Tories are just as bad. But it was Labour that banged on and on and on about ethics and probity. Surely you can see why the hypocrisy is so nauseating"
I would- if Starmer had not acted quickly to get rid of people who have done wrong thibgs.

Incidentally- in what way does Louise Haigh's spent conviction disqualify her for being a Minister of State?

Oh he’s being sensible here.. About time. Whilst the students and ideologues can say no (I would have when I was 21), this is a must. Otherwise the uk is a sitting duck. Time to get real.

Starmer announces biggest hike in defence spending since Cold War – slashing overseas aid to pay for it
The Prime Minister is making a rare statement to the Commons about defence and security amid growing calls to ramp up spending due to the crisis in Ukraine and Donald Trump's interventions

I don’t think falsely claiming to be a solicitor counts as a ‘tweak’.

Looks like it’s ok to play fast and loose with the law / reality if you’re Labour.

Stop nitpicking. I did it once when I pointed out that six years is not 'nearly a decade' and I the error of my ways was pointed out.
Six years, ten years ... whose counting?
LinkedIn. CV. Who cares?
Not Labour supporters, that's for sure. Or at least not when it's Labour politicians being criticised.
@CurlewKate would say exactly the same if it was a Tory, you know she would.

@Rummly "Any dishonesty offence is enough to land a lawyer in very hot water, and I imagine the same is true for plenty of jobs. Haigh was a Minister of State for God’s sake. Why are trying to minimise this?"

I'm not trying to minimise it. But it was a SPENT conviction. Are you saying that shouldn't be a thing?

Not at all. But that’s not how the law on spent convictions and the right not to disclose, work.

Rummly · 25/02/2025 13:38

Not being able to pay for a ticket is not fraud. That’s a very poor example.

If you were intentionally fare dodging then you were committing a crime. As are people who defraud insurance companies.

To judge by what’s been posted of Haigh’s offence, she defrauded her employer of over £1,200.

I apologise @Katypp -I tagged the wrong poster. I meant @Kittygolightlyy.

Incidentally- the moral high ground on this thread seems to be entirely occupied by those who have never tweaked their CVs, or added something to an insurance claim.

🙄 you’re embarrassing yourself. I did quote. (And) The ref was in the post above it, but I thought the link was obvious.. I guess it’s only there if you want to see it huh.

Tories want to means test state pension as well. If you want real benefits and structures for normal people you have to vote for actually left wing parties like greens etc. People who aren't rich or senior in the private sector have been terrified since 2010 under 14 years of misery. Who speaks for us? Elon Musk? Don't make me laugh.

Your uncle just needs to pass the farm on 7 years before his death and it will be exempt from the reduced rate of inheritance tax. If its under £1m it won't qualify anyway. You may be worrying about nothing.

"I don’t know about you but I’ve never committed Fraud"

Well, I've certainly several times walked out of a railway station without paying if there's nobody in the ticket office. And I haven't done this-but I know loads of people who have added something to their insurance claim if their car was stolen or their house burgled. It's quite common behaviour.

What's your approach for self scan at supermarkets?

Incidentally. @Katypp, it's customary to acknowledge extensive quotation from outside sources.

Sorry to knock you off your moral high ground, but I've quoted no one as far as I remember, certainly not extensively.
Just the thoughts in my own head 😀

CurlewKate · 25/02/2025 13:22

@Kittygolightlyy not sure what that emoji means. But you will notice that I have addressed every example outlined on this thread and am happy to discuss any others. But detail and facts don't appear to be your thing....

@Alexandra2001

I’m not trying to make a point.

I have made a point.

Over my last few posts here, using other refd sources also. It is quite clear. I can repeat if you’re slow this morning (happens to us all).

’Labour set itself a very high bar on ethics in government

In the years running up to the 2024 general election, Starmer and his party focused strongly on ethics in government, criticising many Conservative ministers for apparent ethical failings and promising to establish a new ethics and integrity commission.

.. it … looks as if this government does not fully understand how ministers’ actions look to its external critics. Having been so quick to loudly criticise the last government for its perceived failings on ethics and integrity.. Starmer and his team need to show that they truly understand the importance of meeting the standards that they promised to uphold once in office.‘
(IfG)

I understand that the Labour faithfuls will cling on to anything but really, grow up and admit the party are an incompetent and corrupt shambles so far. I hope they get better, I really do.

At least they’ve rowed back on making self ID easier I suppose.
