Scared of what labour will do

Is anyone else terrified of what labour will enforce. The tax on farmers. Will they means test pip? Will they tax state pension more? What else will they do and where will it all end. They ruthlessly without no care took away the winter fuel allowance. Means testing and taxing state pension would massively impact my family

Wasn't Sunak paying less in tax than a nurse? Or am I misremembering?

China was #1 in millionaires leaving home domiciles but the UK was second, which is more than a bit scary when you consider the relative population sizes. There are roughly a billion Chinese people and even the highest estimates put the UK population at 73 million. Therefore, the UK is losing wealthy people faster than anywhere else in the world.

In terms of % of millionaires per adult population China is 0.6% & UK is 5.8% so I'm not sure the above is true?

0.6% of 1.5 billion is many times more than 5.8% of 67 million.

ploppydoppy · 22/02/2025 20:34

Not if they’re paying less than 1% of the Treasury’s income. That’s not significant by any measure.

I was pretty shocked non doms contribution was so low tbh.

@EasternStandard last year we were no 2, the previous year was lower but we also have a lot, "the U.K. had the world’s third-highest number of dollar millionaires." I didn't know that.

The main ones moving are non-doms & those from Russia.

There is an also a question re how much difference those leaving make "For example, last year’s non-dom tax take represented 0.8% of the U.K.’s total £1.1 trillion haul" again a figure that surprised me.

The super rich have super accountants who work out all the ways to pay as little tax as possible.

Papyrophile · 22/02/2025 20:22

I can't be bothered to find the source but it might be Henley & Partners who advise on relocation tax and rules. Absolutely fine to declare, shut the door on the way out. But the reality is that the UK has lost an asset who would have paid a significant amount of tax, to help fund education and the NHS, and won't get the money back again.

We're not ultra high worth people, but we are just successful enough to think we should preserve what we've earned and parental enough to want to pass it down to DC. That is, IMO, the thin line -- and the art of government and taxation is to take a sensible share but not more. Where that line is drawn looks very different depending on the commercial risk a person or couple took to make the money. In self employment as a freelance writer, I was able to cover our day to day costs and mortgage while DH built a business.

Old rules still work:
1 The first year you pay for the business
2 The second year the business pays its way
3 The third year, the business starts to pay you a wage. But probably not a pension contribution; that comes in year five or six. And after that, reinvestment and pension contributions are the priority. Until you retire.

ploppydoppy · 22/02/2025 19:48

America has the most millionaires & billionaires, presumably that's why only they get away with taxes based on citizenship vs residence?

Also something has got to be wrong with our children. Why are they all special needs nowadays. Every 2nd post somebodys child gets benefits because they are special needs. I'm not saying there are no genuine cases but why are there so many nowadays and what the hell is going to happen to all these non verbal special needs kids once their parents die. I mean is it all the ultra processed food they are eating or something we are doing that is hurting them

Older parent hood and increased alcohol intake in women as you asked.

They were always there. We just had breakdowns later in life. Also the internet allowed ND to meet.
This is multifaceted.

Blimey, really. Who do you think is a good leader? FElon and Trump?

People like @Finerthingsinlife confuse shallow trappings and appearance with competence. It's very sad.

TankFlyBossW4lk · 22/02/2025 18:38

Finerthingsinlife · 22/02/2025 14:41

Honestly, I'm more worried that we have an extremely weak leader who is not at all respected on the world's stage at this point in history.

He's just too weak for today's global politics. He has no presence or bearing and is instantly forgettable. He doesn't even have a strong monarch to back him either.

It's a mess and we are embarrassing on the world stage quite frankly.

You are deluded if you think Labour and RR will rescue the UK.

I don't necessarily think anyone will save the UK. But I'm absolutely sure that the Tory's won't save anyone but their own skins. As we have seen.

Moooooooooooooooooo · 22/02/2025 18:22

IridiumSky · 22/02/2025 02:16

Rubbish.

The UK state pension is taxed as income.

Erm, no it’s not. The state pension is under the tax allowance limit, ergo, no tax liable. You only pay tax if you are earning or have an additional private pension which then takes you over the tax allowance limit.

They haven't done anything ruthlessly or without care. If you're getting the state pension now, I doubt that will change now.

We're here because of 14 years of misrule by the Torys. I'm amazed at how many people who really don't earn that much or rely on state pensions vote Tory. They are so vulnerable to having to pay for their health care and social services, yet they hang on because of Winter fuel payments and the like. False economy I say.

I feel much safer with Labour although I do appreciate that we are going through a very bad time for the Western world. Brought on again by right wing politics. God the thought of having Kemi, Boris or any other of the utter idiots who have been in Tory leadership positions at the helm chills me to the bone. Unfortunately, I suspect those people who might think like you will vote in Farrage next. And then you'll think it's wonderful that he's got a D in maths because everyone can relate to him🙄

@BellaCiao23 the usa is not the country they would want to go to anyway. There is not much to encourage them to stay in the uk at the moment

Can you imagine if beaten by a lettuce Truss was still pm. She would probably have been on that stage, saluting next to Bannon.

🤣

I’d be waaaay more scared if we still had Bonkers Boris, Slimy Sunak or god forbid Fuckwitt Farage sucking up to Trump and Musk. Count your blessings.

I think if you open a newspaper you will find the statistics. You can also just use Google.

I asked @Dorisbonson because Google told me China was number 1?

We also have a very disproportionate number to start with...

Did it say where UK was?

Oh good. Another post from someone’s username is the Little drummer girl. A book about how a girl gets recruited by Mossad. I will be ok with what is to come. But I’m scared for others. I’m scared for pensioners who needed their fuel allowance to survive. I’m worried for Gaza, as I worry for the vulnerable. Who (mossad) the idf have obliterated. Trump wants to create an American riveria takeover. Maybe that’s why Meghan markle changed the name of her brand. Who wants that association. I feel not just with labour but the world we are on the cusp of something I’ve not seen in my lifetime

Wtf are you on about? I wasn't aware there is a limit to how many times I post. I didn't know there was a book, I'm going to have to read it. To even make your comment on my username without knowing how it came into being shows a lack of any kind of thought process, let alone reasonable.

You clearly can't back your facts so are resorting to absurdities and regurgitation of your script.

We should not be importing any food. It’s not good for the planet.

We need to support our farmers to be a better industry. They work very hard. It’s not really a job you go home from at 5pm, it’s a 24/7 way of life. If you have a dairy herd you have to be available to milk twice a day, every day, even Christmas Day. You don’t get paid leave. During the lambing season you are on call day and night. If you grow corn/wheat etc., you’re out combining all day and through the night, to make sure you get the crop in on time. The weather is a farmer’s nightmare. Too much rain and a whole crop can be ruined.

The K for at least 100 years has imported food, there are too many of us! and as you rightly say, our climate can be fickle.

I'm well aware of dairy farming, i ve milked cows, been up at 5am, rolling back a silage sheet in the freezing rain, shat on by a cow in the spring, kicked in the face!!! its fucking hard work but like most jobs on a farm, it's often some poor sod on min wage who is doing this!!
Farmers campaigned hard to get rid of wages boards, shameful!

But dairy right now is highly profitable, so is lamb production... they like to keep quiet about that!

My point is, not that we should scrap subsidy, though it did work in NZ, its that farmers already get a tremendous amount of support from the tax payer, yet all they want is more..... or as they say down here "You never see a poor farmer"

I think the most vulnerable will be those with anxiety, ASD and ADHD diagnoses. And those with ME/CFS. The best solution would be do have high quality clinically-trained assessors who do not have an agenda. Can’t see that being funded though.

Obviously I don’t know what your conditions are but it’s horrid you are feeling so vulnerable.

You don’t get PIP for ASC, AdHD or anxiety. You get it for disability. You may have ASC or anxiety but you will need to be significantly disabled to qualify. As such I don’t think people significantly impacted enough to qualify will be anymore vulnerable than anybody else.

Did you complain about the benefit cuts the Tories implemented? Bringing in the two child cap? I bet you didn't.
