Are you wary of travelling to USA currently?

I am sure you will tell me I’m BU, but that’s fine!
I’ve been to the states numerous times - Florida (all over, not just Disney/Orlando), New York City, California (los Angeles), Massachusetts and New Orleans.
Myself and 2 adult DCs were planning to go to Orlando again this October. Primarily for Halloween and DS (28) is autistic & very fixated with all things Disney.
DD (30) and I decided not to go ahead and take DS to Disneyland Paris instead. Yes, we’ve been there before, and it doesn’t really compare to the US version (IMO) not even close, but DS won’t mind.
it’s solely down to the current POS in charge and all his minions. America seems (to me) to be on a knife edge, very volatile, and DD being LGBT is understandably unsettled too.
I am not the sort of person who usually would even give a moment’s thought to something like this, but I just have a really uneasy feeling about going there. Chances are, at age 58, I may never go again.
AIBU or would you be thinking twice at the moment about travelling there? (especially Florida which is a red state)
I detest that man SO much!

We’re going in a couple of weeks. Part work, park family visit. Slightly nervous to say the least. Feels like they could pull anything right now.

ProfessorLayton1 · 26/03/2025 15:24

We didn’t book the flight tickets, as we were waiting for my daughter’s exam results and was in the middle of a family emergency.
we had all the national park reservations with free cancellation. Hotel reservations were the same, so didn’t loose any money.
we generally book everything ourselves and always look for cancellation policy before doing so. Understand that if you are going to loose thousands of pounds, it’s difficult.
We love going to US and was really looking forward to it.

TizerorFizz · 26/03/2025 15:12

@ProfessorLayton1 Which companies don’t ask for a deposit? Ours was a lot so we are going and we had already paid for the flights. There’s plans and then there’s £thousands down the pan.

ProfessorLayton1 · 26/03/2025 15:04

We just cancelled our holiday to US, I don’t think we will go when this administration is in charge.
we went during DT s first term and did not have any issues but this term, it all looks very unhinged !
Luckily, we won’t loose any money and we will go somewhere in Europe/ Canada this year.

LBFseBrom · 26/03/2025 14:47

That is possible but doubt it would affect tourists overly much, you'd just come home early. People are still going to America and coming back in one piece. My son will be going there in a few weeks to work for a couple of months, in various states, he does every year. He cannot stand the organge man but manages to get home unscathed.

If you want to go, go.

As a heterosexual, sexually-active woman, I wouldn’t go to any state with mad abortion legislation. All too easy to die if a miscarriage if that’s the reading of the abortion law that the hospital you happen to end up takes.

In fact I have a friend who had a complicated miscarriage at 14 weeks, but then bled a lot when some of the products of conception got stuck in her cervix . Had she been somewhere with no-abortion-at-any-point or no-abortion-after-X-weeks where they strive to save the life of the “baby” over that of the woman, she would have bled to death.

Not much of a prospect- however unlikely it is- just to have a chance to eat 48 flavours of Oreo.

Why is a library on the border anyway? Surely the existing entrance has to be either in the US or in Canada? Otherwise there is no border.

The entrance is in US, there's a footpath around which Canadians patrons used. Now they are making their own entrance, whether they ll be allowed in the US 'side' inside is the next question I guess

Agreed. Or applying it in good faith. Or having available judges to hear cases in good time. Or not just deciding to ‘revoke’ green cards. Or putting you in detention centers far from where you were originally detained and not updating records allowing loved ones to locate you.

Edited

It’s very rare to revoke a green card. Is immigration can be chaotic and heavy handed but no point making stuff up

Being in possession of the equipment doesn't prove that she was going to use it to work while she was there. Eight days in solitary confinement is utterly cruel, bearing in mind that she's not been charged with (let alone convicted of) any crime.

ICE certainly do not mess around, they've got quotas to fill. There have been documented instances of them detaining Green Card holders to pressure them into leaving voluntarily, even though they've got the right to live and work in the US. It's the sort of stuff you'd expect of Russia. Mind you, Putin is very much idolised by the POTUS...

Edited

Yeah sure. She was just carrying bout expensive and heavy equipment used for her job for fun. She wasn’t working

MushMonster · 25/03/2025 23:44

Well.... Canada and US do not have a fenced border....
Do you want them to have another wall? Like the Berlin wall?

The town is just in the border, half half, as many other places. It is quite common in Europe, by the way. The town was there before someone drew a line on a map

As it has transpired recently ICE is paid by the government for each person detained- so more people detained and for longer, the better for ICE. Zero motivation to get to the bottom of issues and to release people.

Obviously detention centers are funded per inmate!

Border controls are fair enough really. People in the us really don’t want such a high level of illegal migration

I think they are headed for civil war tbh.

I hope not but i really don’t think so. We are going in the summer as we have family there. I don’t think there’s any issue with trump and LGB.

Lots of countries have politicians I don’t agree with. It wouldn’t put me off unless there was actual danger

MushMonster · 25/03/2025 23:25

I just watched a video in youtube about a library that sits in the border between US and Canada and now US wants separare entrance and sections for each country..
Has anyone heard of this madness?

It has to be true because proper newspapers do have it reported too.
I just cannot bieve this!

ICE is a government agency funded by congressional appropriation, just like all other government agencies.

Where did you come across this nonsense?

Meant to say ICe detention centres. Apologies. Most of them are privately owned and run as businesses.

Carouselfish · 25/03/2025 22:40

I have to go as my dad is American. Al I expect to have changed is the loss of that polite interest r.e being British, replaced with maybe a go home vibe. But really, that started to come in 6 years ago or so.

I have not changed my mind from when I originally created this thread.
In fact, the news & things I’ve heard have only strengthened my conviction.
For example, a friend in Canada reports that her hairdresser was verbally abused in Florida & spat at by a MAGA, and told to ‘go back home’ - they had Canadian plates on the car, as they had driven there.
The USA is gradually revealing itself to be a hostile nation, so anyone not American should proceed with caution with regards to travel plans.
Never would have thought I’d see the like in my lifetime 😢

You seem to have a lot of faith in ICE following the law at a time when the legal system cannot keep up with the chaos.

As it has transpired recently ICE is paid by the government for each person detained- so more people detained and for longer, the better for ICE. Zero motivation to get to the bottom of issues and to release people.

MushMonster · 25/03/2025 21:42

I agree, it is unbelievable. Like a dream you are trying to wake up from.

PeloMom · 25/03/2025 21:41

A friend went recently and was pulled aside (Canadian). They were told that now they have new AI that goes through all the entries, visa/ESTA applications, anything US entry related for each person that highlights even the smallest hiccup from the past. I am reluctant to go with my family as the current administration has proven in the past that children can be separated from their parents while they process/resolve whatever mistake/ issue they may think there is for weeks or however long it takes and I’m not willing to take this risk.
