Tell me my teens aren't the only ones lol

I am growing more and more gobsmacked with my teenagers common sense and I wanted to hear some other funny stories.

This week alone, son has toasted bread with butter already on it because he couldn't be bothered to wait and it smelt like the house was on fire.

Was feeling ill, so made him a Lemsip. He poured it (literally) straight into his mouth then screeched he didn't realise it was hot. He watched me make it from the kettle.

Today he is working with me over his college half term in the office for some extra cash. Blew his nose, then proceeded to try and open my free standing air conditioner fin part as he thought ' I had a fancy Japanese bin'

Please tell me I am not alone😂😂😂

I’m sorry but a lot of these are just odd. Eating raw bacon, putting milk in a kettle, thinking you fry eggs with a shell on?

Either dreadful parenting or not very bright. My 10 yr old wouldn’t do any of this.

Well, aren't you the perfect parent? 🙄

Duechristmas · 24/02/2025 18:36

I love this, my youngest of three is almost 17 and they're all ND, their mistakes are hilarious 🤣

Newname71 · 24/02/2025 18:34

After reading all these I’ve come to the conclusion that my 17 year old son is a genius. My husband on the other hand….,,,

I have to admit that I did the milk in the kettle thing in a hotel last year. If you catch it just as it boils you don't ruin the kettle. Just give it a good rinse out and it's fine. Lovely cup of hot chocolate. It is several decades since I was in my teens.

A colleague and I went on a course a few years ago. Pissed and hungry in the hotel we made noodles in the kettle 🤦‍♀️.
Fortunately we managed to get it clean the following morning!

When I was at uni

  1. Student set fire to the microwave for putting a tin of ravioli in to heat up
  2. Student evacuated a 14 floor tower block- for cooking his sausages (polystyrene tray and all) under the grill and fell asleep
  3. Student I lived with wondered why his frozen pizza smelled- he cooked it in the cardboard box, in the clingfilm....
  4. Student became ill- didn't realise raw chicken needed cooking
At this point I was glad mum had made me cook for the family at least once a week since the age of 11- as no one else seemed to know how to cook or bake- I traded this commodity for less cleaning duties- or for lifts to places I wanted to go... This was in 2007- and completely gobsmacked me!!

The chicken one is particularly shocking 🤣

Glad I am not the only one to have microwaved knickers @StuckHurtDone it works v well as long as theres nothing metallic and you don't forget/get distracted!! Socks also!

I had previously done it on recommendation of friends and it worked, so carried on but clearly put them on for way too long as needed to drink the optimum amount before the taxi arrived! This was 20 years ago and I’ve definitely not done it again!!

StuckHurtDone · 24/02/2025 18:14

Late teens…. Needed a specific pair of knickers for a night out, but the washing machine had only just finished…. Knickers in the microwave to dry Whilst pre drinking…. Forgotten about, microwave plate cracked and house nearly on fire!!

Hint… teenager was me 😅

Trust me your 10 year old will at some point do something completely stupid 🤣

Everyone does stupid things sometimes to be fair. I did some remarkably dopey things while sleep deprived when kids were tiny (lost my keys as I’d packed them in the freezer with the shopping springs to mind)

MMUmum · 24/02/2025 18:03

My DD complaining that the bills for her shared flat are high( all electric).I said I'm not surprised with 3 girls having long showers, she replied ' oh no, the shower is only the water rates' 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ I said, 'well are you having cold showers' u could see the penny slowly dropping 😅

Hazey19 · 24/02/2025 17:49

You are not alone! The lack of common sense my teenage son has is unbelievable. He used to be so sensible when he was little 😂

tattoonewbie · 24/02/2025 17:41

Just remembered I melted my tv by burning a candle right next to it as a teen
My son put empty pan on the heat for ages then jumped out of his skin when the water he put in was errrm...lively

Not enough to get the landlord in touch or lose the security deposit. I'm good.

I'm not sure many of these would warrant the landlord needing to contact mummy

Out of interest, just did an advanced search on one of the super smug posters who is claiming perfect parenting on here. My god, they are a far superior human being to anyone else on the planet, and relentlessly negative about everything, dropping sarcastic and insulting remarks on numerous topics. I genuinely don't understand this phenomenon, what is the point? Is this person utterly miserable in RL? Are they like this with their friends and family? Staggering.

Just be grateful they're not your friend in real life, it would be bloody dull! 😴

InMySpareTime · 24/02/2025 16:40

When DD was teenage, at a family meal out she texted me from the restaurant toilet asking me to rescue her.
She was very tired and couldn't figure out which way to turn the lock to get out of the cubicle. I suggested clockwise as it had a 50:50 chance of working and was better than inaction. I was right and she was amazed at my "escape room" skills Confused.

Well I just went to the loo and wondered why the door wouldn't shut...I'd turned the lock before shutting it. I'm 50

But did you ask someone else , Why????? 😁

My 17 year old is learning to drive. She put petrol in her car today and I watched her take the nozzle out with the handle pressed in!

Thankfully the pump hadn't started so no harm done. She said I was overreacting when I was explaining what would have happened if it started up 🥺

I think in this instance you are both right. The nozzle has a sensor and the pump typically won't start till the nozzle is in the tank, even if you squeeze the handle. However, I wouldn't rely on this, because a sensor can be dirty or there can be a malfunction with the machine.

My teen is blind (with a little bit of functional sight). Her specialist glasses are her lifeline to the world. So far this year (and we are only in February), she has broken three frames, because she takes them off and puts them right next to her bed, where she exits said bed every morning. She forgets and stands on them.

I have amd and I have a pocket thing that sits between the bedbase and the mattress. It has saved my glasses! They cost about £7 on Amazon

I have a friend with a son who decides to use the microwave last week, caused a fire, but he has severe learning disabilities and autism..glad you're all enjoying hilarity, hopefully all concerned have actually learned by their "mistakes" before they burn the house down, kill or injure, your insurance policy refused to pay. I would give them a stint in the casualty department, where I worked for 5 years.

Home insurance will pay out for accidental fires. If you decide to set your own house on fire on purpose they probably won't as it's classed as arson. Hope this helps

Errors · 24/02/2025 14:59

BeGoldHedgehog · 23/02/2025 22:03

Well done you

Right?! I was moved out at 17 and I still fuck up now. Went to get out of my car the other day and walk in to the house with the engine still running.

I think teens go through an enourmous growth spurt and parts of their brain are literally deactivated - specifically parts responsible for empathy and managing risks (not totally deactivated of course) I’m not surprised some of them do things like this

Belaymehearties · 24/02/2025 14:53

Learned helplessness also drives me mad! Only present me with a problem if you don't have an solution! Today I've been texted at work with:
"Dcat has been sick on the kitchen floor". I'm in a meeting, not due home for 4 hours so clear it up with some kitchen roll and spray fgs!

"The dishwater salt light is flashing". You know where the dishwasher salt is kept! Put. Some. In. And restart.

"Can't find any clean towels/clothing". Maybe look on the airer WITH BOTH EYES where I put them after laundering after you left them on the bathroom floordrobe.

So tempted to leave home and leave them to it, but I'd come back to a hoarders mess!

I'm still confused though about teens buttering toast before putting it in the toaster to "save time" - how does it save time doing it before rather than after? 🤔

It doesn't 😂. That's why I added it in haha.

teens... my husband still does shit like that. like buttered toast, eating catfood by mistake - it apparently tasted ok and there wasn't a picture of a cat on the tin. Leaving the house or going to bed without extinguising candles. I can't even name all the domestic engineering experiments. And he's ex army. How did the army survive him that's a mystery

A friend of mine back in high school thought you filled the washing machine up with water before turning it on.. otherwise how else would the water get there? Hmm

Ha, the washing machine we had when I was a kid DID have to be filled up through a hose (top loader)
