Tell me my teens aren't the only ones lol

I am growing more and more gobsmacked with my teenagers common sense and I wanted to hear some other funny stories.

This week alone, son has toasted bread with butter already on it because he couldn't be bothered to wait and it smelt like the house was on fire.

Was feeling ill, so made him a Lemsip. He poured it (literally) straight into his mouth then screeched he didn't realise it was hot. He watched me make it from the kettle.

Today he is working with me over his college half term in the office for some extra cash. Blew his nose, then proceeded to try and open my free standing air conditioner fin part as he thought ' I had a fancy Japanese bin'

Please tell me I am not alone😂😂😂

DS ran a bath, forgot about it and flooded the bathroom and my bedroom, tried to vacuum up all the water. He is mid 30’s now and a very successful business owner!

didnt break any thing by some miracle…

DumpedByText · 23/02/2025 21:51

My 17 year old is learning to drive. She put petrol in her car today and I watched her take the nozzle out with the handle pressed in!

Thankfully the pump hadn't started so no harm done. She said I was overreacting when I was explaining what would have happened if it started up 🥺

My son put a pizza in the box in the oven ! He’s 31 . Il get bashed now for bein a bad parent 😂😂😂

I can’t believe you didn’t given instructional lessons in that years ago! What an awful, awful parent you are… teen DS has a friend who jumped off the roof of their house yelling ‘parkour’ to see if it would hurt.
Spoiler, it did. One parent is doctor, the other a barrister and the kid is very ‘bright’… it was til the hormones took over!

Rainbow1235 · 23/02/2025 21:47

Oh and my daughter once asked in a restaurant was gammon a fish 😳. She still gets teased over that now and it was years ago . She was however 21 at the time 😂

There’s making a silly mistake and then there’s being totally unequipped to deal with life due to parental failures. The former are funny, the latter are sad

I’ll look out for your user name on the teen boards in a few years!
They know what they should do, and do the stupid thing anyway. Even the sensible ones.

Rosesanddaffs · 23/02/2025 21:45

@Srepmum1984 thanks for starting this thread, these are hilarious 😂 xx

Slothsandspiderman · 23/02/2025 21:43

Eeeeeeeee there’s some right misery knickers on here tonight.

My 10 yr old is a whizz at maths, very techy, loves performing arts.

However genuinely walks around like a fart in trance whenever he’s given a task or two. Even he is starting to laugh at how gormless he is……sometimes.

Your tales are giving me a giggle at least

Imisscoffee2021 · 23/02/2025 21:43

I recognise a few of these from my own teenage mishaps, I look forward to my 18 month old son growing up to do them too 😅

Drylogsonly · 23/02/2025 21:42

lovemycbf · 23/02/2025 21:09

Trust me your 10 year old will at some point do something completely stupid 🤣

Yeah, you’re fucked when your 10 year old becomes a teen - you will eat your words! Your smugness now will
come back to haunt you

ReggaetonLente · 23/02/2025 21:41

I did all kinds of stupid shit as a teenager. Microwaved bread in the bag to defrost it (it caught fire). Left my laptop next to an electric fan heater (it melted).

i promise I actually am an intelligent, functioning member of society now!

My son wanted to know what fire smelled like.
Ended up with a blister on his nose.

🤣🤣

Sminty2 · 23/02/2025 21:40

Many years ago, I woke up to the aroma of frying bacon. It was 3am. Went downstairs, (dressed), son and 4 friends (19-24) sitting around the table eating bacon sandwiches and smoking. In the middle of the table was a full petrol can, purloined from our garage, ashtrays next to the petrol can. They had run out of petrol about a mile away and decided to borrow our mower petrol. Felt hungry after all the walking, so made a snack before walking back. He’s turned out really well, considering. It’s not just you and yours 😊

Our dd hoovered up spilt milk in the fridge with the Dyson cordless
Obviously killed it and it was quite new Angry

The son of one of my friends hoovered up sick in his University flat 🤢

And they wondered why it smelt awful every time they switched the hoover on after that!

Tickyandtackyandjackiethebackie · 23/02/2025 21:40

When I was a student, one of my friends (age 19) tried to cook pasta by filling up a saucepan with warm water from the tap and leaving it on the side? I had to explain how to boil water!

BeGoldHedgehog · 23/02/2025 21:39

No, I don't think you can distinguish between these.
Some parents can hammer home how to use the washing machine and teens do things without thinking like LaPalmaLlama....thats what teens do.
I remember doing things myself ...and look back and think why...but at the time....I just wasn't thinking

UnicornPug · 23/02/2025 21:39

Mine thought that the self checkout had a voice activated feature and loudly said ‘pepper’ into it. More than once. Made several people’s day. The other one ran full pelt into a glass door on holiday last week because ‘it wasn’t usually closed’ so I’ll take my crap parenting medal and wear it with pride 😂

There are some incredibly rude posters on this thread. Teenagers have done stupid things for all of eternity. My Nana, as a teenager, ran away from where she was evacuated to go and stay with her friend in a place that was being more heavily bombed than her own home town. When questioned she said that she’d read it was more dangerous ‘at home’ so she went to someone else’s.

Wrong.

My son is a fantastic cook and knows about things like cooking safely etc. But this is why this isnt about knowledge but about the total loss of common sense that happens to many many teenagers. My sons logic was that if you can cook a toastie in the toaster in one of thost bag things, you could cook an egg in one. Little bit of oil, egg, job done.

A small fire and a knackered toaster later, this was proved not so.

You know how a genius can solve the questions of the universe but cant put their trousers on the right way up without help? Teenagers are a bit like that. I am on my sixth of six and whilst I would say that the boys seemed to be the worst for it, despite getting extra "dont be a dick" lessons in terms of cooking, laundry etc, they have all gone through it at some point. In my experience they overthink things to find a short cut or cleverer way to do things because they are of course superior to us lower life forms (their parents) doing things the slow old way, and need to prove their superiority. And failing at these "solutions" is part of the learning process of how to be a fully equipped adult. As the saying goes "a man who never made a mistake never made anything."

JesusH · 23/02/2025 21:38

Oh to have a teen that never makes a silly mistake!

Do they even exist?

Bonbon249 · 23/02/2025 21:38

I shared a flat with a student couple (early 20's) who put butter in the microwave still in the foil wrapper - did not understand why I shrieked and turned it off immediately! They had never heard of arcing.

Countrydiary · 23/02/2025 21:36

These are so excellent, I’m crying with laughter.

Also terrified as my nine year old thinks I’m an idiot and that she knows it all. Dread to think what we’ll face when she’s a teen 🤣🤣

What a nasty little comment. You can fuck off now.

Bingbopboomboomboombopbam · 23/02/2025 21:35

My DD’s common sense seems to go out the window once she’s home. I often wonder how this girl solo travels everywhere and is still alive.

As for me I remember the first time I cooked rice. Not even my flatmate’s dog ate it.
